Nice garden - glad to see you have a pumpkin growing to honor the Great Pumpkin (^-^) Do you leave the straw down all year long or do you plant a cover crop for the winter and compost the straw (or hay) Oh and I love the watermelon hammocks

Hi Dwight? So I have tried a bunch of different things, including 2 winters/springs of cover crop with varying degrees of success. For the most part, I leave the straw down all year, maybe toss excess stuff in the compost pile, and mix up it up into the garden soil a bit. Last spring, I tried field peas, which grew well, but were not as easy to kill as I had read. I might try them again though. Pea shoots in early spring are a treat! I watched a video regarding how to care for your sugar baby watermelons and they showed how the hammocks save the melons from breaking from the vine too early. Are you a gardener? Sounds like you have some knowledge.
