- Ryan takes a look of six different raccoon cage traps.
He discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these traps and gives some tips on how he uses them.
If you are interested in purchasing a cage style raccoon trap for live trapping raccoons, you're sure to get some direction here.
Raccoons can be trapped in lots of different wire cages. We have many types, but certain ones shine in certain situations.
how about a link to the trap you recommend?
I use 12 x12” floor tiles on the back and the 2 back sides (wire them to the trap) to keep them from stealing bait plus I put 2 heavy concrete blocks on top to them from moving the trap. Also you must double up the locking uprights on the door or they will bend them squeezing out the crack at the bottom of the door. Cat food for bait. Caught 8
Great video I've been messing around with doing some pest control the last few months learning a lot
hi I have two questions the last cage trap you showed where can I buy that one ? and the poly trap can I put that on a roof? and I want to thank you for this video it really gave me the information that I need when buying a trap because Iam new to racoon trapping
The last trap in that video was a Comstock trap. here is a link to their website:

Yes, the Polytrap can be used on a roof.
Thanks for watching.
I have one of those cheap green traps. It's survived 20 raccoons, with minor repairs. I attached some 1x6 boards around the sides and back to keep them from stealing the bait. I also grab a couple handfuls of tall grass/weeds and throw some inside to hide the pan and some on top as well. I was going to throw it out last week, but had no room in the trash can. Now it's set up for number 21. I also caught a skunk that was easy to release. I am looking for something stronger and this was a nice review.
But you've shown that with some modification and thoughtfulness, you can make even a less than optimal trap effective. Well done.
Thoughtful use of a trap (placement, modification, etc) gets the job done.
I was hoping for comparison of how sensitive the trigger is. I have a small double door that required a lot of pan force to trip the trigger (2 rods side by side.) I had bait stolen w/o setting trap off. I polished the trigger and pan axle and dramatically improved the sensitivity of the trap.
The triggers can be set pretty light on the comstock.
Can you list the brand of these traps please?
Joe, sorry for the delay.
Our preferred spring operated, double door trap is COMSTOCK CUSTOM TRAP brand.
DURA-POLY makes the plastic trap.
The standard cage traps we use are from two brands:
TOMAHAWK and SAFEGUARD.
These four brands are a great start. WILDLIFE CONTROL SUPPLIES is an online retailer and all of these traps plus others can be purchased from them.
Right on point on each traps , great video . The only one I haven’t used is the plastic one.
Thanks 👍
Thanks for this and your other helpful videos. I've been using a Havahart 1079 (large 1-door trap). While I have successfully caught 30 raccoons over the past couple of months, I've become increasingly dissatisfied with the trap. The handle is flimsy and keeps coming detached; the critters can reach through the overly large gaps at the back and steal the bait; they've bent and broken parts of the frame; it's already badly corroded after only two months of use; and I've had multiple escapes. There are many videos on UA-cam showing how they do it, either by sheer force on the door or by actually reaching around the door to pull on the lock frame.
I've ordered a Tomahawk trap based on your advice - they are available here in Canada from Wildlife Control Supplies.
You'll notice the quality upgrade.
The new Tomahawk arrived this week. The difference in quality is obvious from the start. Thanks for the recommendation!
I know it’s been awhile since this was uploaded but I’m have trouble with raccoons reaching through traps and take the bait instead of going in there. Is there some advice you could give me to stop this like maybe putting something on the sides of the traps, do you think this would work? Any help would be appreciated.
Yes. This video is our best tip for that situation. It has worked for a lot of people.

Tip for Bait-Stealing Raccoons
Nice reviews. On different note this video gives me idea of getting storage unit for my extra cages etc for my biz. In short term better then building new shed.
All of the traps, ladders, building materials, etc. takes so much space.
The central location makes it easier for all involved to come and go when necessary. (not jut at one person's house)
Ideally, our own building would be great and we've thought about it. Just so expensive. Ahh, the hidden costs of small business.
Does bait go stale? How often should it be changed? And is it useful to wrap a large black plastic garbage bag around the cage to make it extra dark inside?
It could go stale depending what is used. But if there is really a raccoon that needs removed they’ll get to it before it’s bad. I’d use cardboard before a plastic bag especially in hot weather.
In this and other videos, you show a little "cage" for bait that is suspended from the top of the trap. What is that made out of?
It is just a piece of wire mesh that is bendable by hand. Wire mesh gets folded around the bait.
Like to use the county line traps for skunk and opossum. Every now and then we'll usethe county linesfora coon or two. Safeguard traps are the go to traps for us for coon and always use an occupier. Puts their attention on the object verses the cage.
Great advice here.
On models with the steel door. The edges are rolled to make the door stronger. I took pieces of election sign wire and slid it into the hollow rolled edges. I put a quarter inch rught turn at the top end so the rod cant slide out the bottom of the holes.
Good mod
Hi I purchased the Tomahawk 924 Poly Trap since I have 2 raccoon who are used to metal traps. I put canned mackerel and hot dogs today and all they did was eats the dropping I left outside the front of the trap. I have caught 5 so far in the metal cages but was wondering what bait do you use that is irresistible in the poly trap? Please advise...
Gary, try a switch from the protein based baits to something sweet. We suggest marshmallows and some anise oil.
@@Frontlineanimalremoval I second that. I've been using marshmallows exclusively and very successfully. With meats you run the risk of catching unwanted animals - cats and SKUNKS!
Best trap I've used is the Comstock. Very versatile built tough.
Jim Comstock commented on a video on our channel once. We thought we had arrived.
Thanks for letting people know! They can contact us directly for help, not only in what traps to use, but how to use them.

What make/model is the 2nd trap you show in the video ?
Thanks
Safeguard 52830
13:15 well crap. I just had a raccoon escape the cheap Havahart 1079 metal cage trap. Pushed right through the front door. Looks like I need to buy a poly trap. Mainly since my neighbors keep feeding the raccoons, and there are about 7 of them that will quickly turn into 20. Have you ever had a raccoon push through the front door of your poly trap? What is the best way to clean them if you use peanut butter as bait or just in general?
No. Many times deep cleaning is not done. The acquired scents of animals often attract curiosity from others.
If you could have 1 raccoon live trap what would it be. Thanks
Comstock Double Door Trap
@@Frontlineanimalremoval what size for raccoon? Thanks!
the 36 for raccoons specifically
I have a squirrel sized one and trying to catch a rat or nutria. It just went back and forth getting the bait and has not sprung trap. Also I’ve watched a snake crawl through the big holes on havahart trap. Spend 40-60 prefer not to have to go buy a smaller trap.
Who makes the dubble door trap with the wire’s on the side
Tomahawk and Safeguard are two reputable brands
@@Frontlineanimalremoval thanks
In your mind what model is the best one
I have them stepping over the pan and stealing the bait
@@Frontlineanimalremoval what model would be your choice for coons that don’t touch the pan and get the bait
Cool.
Thanks!
No problem!
These small harmless animals on my property never are a bother. Human removal traps more appropriate. Neighbors can be a pain in the ass.
