I grew up here and find the open highways and abundant trees very relaxing. Living on the eastern edge of Kansas City, Kansas, I had a view of downtown KCMO from my bedroom window. Outside of a few interchanges (Grandview Triangle), there are hardly any traffic jams so. you'll get to where you need to get to on time.
Also, if they ever ditch those stoplights on 71, you could soon have Interstate directly going from Louisiana to the Canadian border via I49 & I29. Could be a good time to steal I45 from Texas and rename the 29/49 stretch.
But then what would you call I-45 in Texas? Sure I'd like to see I-49 extended past the stoplights to tie into I-29, but if you use one number it'll be out of place either north or south of KC because it crosses I-35 there.
In the beginning of the video the where I-49, I-435, I-470 all intersect is called the Grandview Triangle by locals, or the 3 Trails Crossing officially. They rebuilt the whole thing from about 2000 to 2008 if my memory hasn't failed me. It was shaped more like a triangle before I-470 was built and is actually north of Grandview a few miles.
Finally got to watch this Friday night, enjoyed the KC redux and Pat Methemy tunes fit the ride very well in a relaxing way. The video speed annotations was a nice touch too. I might just have to do a redux of my own during this time of social distancing.

Greetings from the UK again. Some interesting observations from the video: First, keep the video speed, its an interesting point. Also I loved the double deck section of I-229 in St Joseph and the small piece of US 71 with the lights was an unusual section. It reminded me of the southernmost part of the Garden State Parkway in Cape May County, NJ which had some at grade intersections before they got upgraded a few years ago. Finally the Pat Metheny track "Slip Away" was sampled by Nick Holder for "Summer Daze" which you used on a video in the past but I think it might have been taken down probably due to the music. Once again, great work, stay safe and I look forward to more.
Thank you very much, "Summer Daze" is still up in video #15-38 in Utah, ua-cam.com/video/vSoHbxgtRwU/v-deo.html Glad you liked the speed graphic, I hope you are staying safe as well.
Freewayjim thanks for the reply. That’s good because it’s a good chill out track that could work for most of your videos except the ones in heavy traffic or downtown slow traffic where something a little slower is required.
I like the video speed that you added. First time I showed my dad one of your videos, he thought you were really speeding through New Orleans and I had to tell him that you sped up your videos, not going super fast! :D
Great Video! I liked how you talked about the history of US 71 and why it’s not an interstate because every time I go to Kansas City, I enter through that highway and wonder why there are just a few random traffic lights on the highway. It would be cool that the traffic lights would be removed one day (probably never gonna happen) and I-49 can be extended northward and beyond the I-435 and I-470 interchange. By the way, I love the new little feature that tells us the speed of the video.
I honestly believe it will happen. The area is an absolute nightmare during rush hour. The only way to get the lights removed is to put it on as ballot and have the people vote on it. If it is put on a ballot I believe it would be passed by a landslide.
I like the video speed notation, gives a bit of context to what's going by I think! I know you find the plains boring, Jim, but I love watching thunderstorms roll across the plains personally!
KC resident here. Those stoplights on 71 have always irritated me. I understand the desire to not want a freeway carving a path through your neighborhood, but sometimes (like in this case) the compromise is far worse than the alternative. The highway still acts as a barrier, regardless of the stoplights along the way. Plus, it's dangerous as you noted.
Thank you for watching. The way it looked driving through, what's the difference in putting a few attractive overpasses and exit ramps where the lights are? what exactly is the neighborhood trying to preserve, it's already nicely landscaped? I would think safety would win out here.

The guy in the white pickup at the beginning, drove me nuts!! Great video though!
You crossed into Kansas on I-70 over the WB side of the Lewis & Clark Viaduct. The next time you went to KC, wasn't that side closed for reconstruction? Oddly enough, that was the newer 1962 side; the EB side in Kansas is what remains of the original 1907 Intercity Viaduct (MoDOT rebuilt its half some years ago), but according to KDOT it was in better shape than the 1962 structure.
It must’ve been a terribly boring drive through I-80 in Nebraska, especially with that unbearable weather huh? At least you have Nebraska on your channel now so that’s good.
I-76 also goes through Ohio and Pennsylvania. Reminds me of I-84, which goes through a few western states as well as a few states in the east. P.S. I liked the video speed feature!
Nice video! Last time I was in KC was 11/09 and St Joe 5/09. Best thing in St Joe was Glore Psychiatric Museum. Busiest place was soup kitchen. As for video speed, I have no opinion, but for those that like it, keep it. Make sure to include it when you stop video during music stoppage LOL. How about redoing very first one you did? Have a great day!
When the WH finally goes through with their promise of infrastructure, I hope the several DOTs start to care more for the overpass aesthetic than what is now for most of them. If I get stuck in a congestion, I want something pretty to look at, don't you agree? Speaking of which, what's the average congestion level like for KC?
The KC metro likes to both underuse and misuse "Exit Only" so I feel the frustration to newcomers. The video speed graphic doesn't really do anything for me but I don't think it hurts the video.
I don't really know, it looks like a church but when I located it on Google Maps it seems to house some social services organizations, it's at the Linwood Boulevard exit on US-71 if you want to look closer. www.google.com/maps/place/Front+Porch+Alliance/@39.0645938,-94.5596791,427a,35y,338.84h,44.88t/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x87c0f75eafe99997:0x558525e66aaa51a2!2sKansas+City,+MO!3b1!8m2!3d39.0997265!4d-94.5785667!3m4!1s0x87c0faaa8becac1b:0x99c4e0bb477bb157!8m2!3d39.0677287!4d-94.561313
Video speed doesnt hurt ... interesting note, so no harm to leave it up if others like it. Had to laugh at the real time request ... anyone who would want to see real time should be forced to watch real time driving of I-10 from El Paso to San Antonio. That Bataan death march drive would cure that request! 😄
My gear is listed in the closing credits at 16:12, I use Apple's Final Cut Pro X. That's a pretty basic function, I would think most halfway decent video editors would have that feature.
Freewayjim lol I been trying to find one for Windows Movie Maker and nothing unless I don’t look hard enough! Excellent videos me and my wife watched several of them including to Phoenix as we are planning to move back soon.
That stretch of US 71 is horrible during rush hour. The local people who fought so hard to keep a freeway out just made it more of a nightmare and they hate it. I do believe it can be converted to a full interestate bringing I-49 all the way to the downtown loop, it will just require being put on a ballot and voted on by the people. If you look closely in the area with the traffic signals, there is an abundance of median between the lanes. It's been said that modot did that intentionally to easily convert that to freeway and have the current travel lanes converted to ramps or even one way frontage roads similar to what's all over Texas.
It's asinine that the city won't allow those lights to go away. The overpasses are safer for pedestrians to cross anyway. Also, the zip code to the right (east) of those lights is known as the murder capital of Missouri.
They had signal cameras for a while at those intersections, but the higher court made them disable them. The cameras and signs remain. Putting a flyover there is just a matter of time. Fortunately, I live east of KC, so I don’t have to drive thru there very often. But yes, the murder/crime rate is bad in that part of the city...
Yikes, I hear that the state of Utah is currently asking for a covid 19 declaration from everyone entering the state. Big Brother really wants to know, I guess. I like the video speed graphic. I'm usually guessing what it might be, and surprisingly, I'm always pretty darn close. 😀 My Son & I are planning a possible day trip down to KC as soon as the weather gets a little better. We really won't have to worry about interacting with anyone. Scary thought, huh?
Thank you! KC is a great idea for a day trip, I hope you guys get to do it and yeah you won't have to interact beyond ordering food at a drive-through I'll bet.
I watched 13-04, but I didn't see an explanation as to why St. Joseph ended up with a double-decker freeway. Did it have something to do with the fairgrounds next door? Also, some of the comments on 13-04 said MoDOT was considering tearing it down in favor of a conventional freeway. Did that ever happen?
Out of all your videos I've watched, KC seems to have some of the worst freeways. Cause of the stoplights on parts of it and having no exit only signs in some spots. Seems kinda dangerous!
There is not a single soundtrack I could use that would please everyone, it's just your cup of tea, which is fine, but that does not mean the soundtrack is bad or doesn't work well, because it does.
I love the fact that you show the video speed
I may do more of that, thank you.

3:53 What's that building on the left side?
I don't really know, it looks like a church but when I located it on Google Maps it seems to house some social services organizations, it's at the Linwood Boulevard exit on US-71 if you want to look closer. www.google.com/maps/place/Front+Porch+Alliance/@39.0645938,-94.5596791,427a,35y,338.84h,44.88t/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x87c0f75eafe99997:0x558525e66aaa51a2!2sKansas+City,+MO!3b1!8m2!3d39.0997265!4d-94.5785667!3m4!1s0x87c0faaa8becac1b:0x99c4e0bb477bb157!8m2!3d39.0677287!4d-94.561313
I found it! The church is called " Front Porch Alliance."
Video speed doesnt hurt ... interesting note, so no harm to leave it up if others like it. Had to laugh at the real time request ... anyone who would want to see real time should be forced to watch real time driving of I-10 from El Paso to San Antonio. That Bataan death march drive would cure that request! 😄
LOL, amen to that! I really don't get the desire for real-time videos.
What video editor do you use that allows you to embed things in the video such as speed limit signs etc...
@@TheGreatSimulator Thank you!
14:28 Welcome To Nebraska (THE BLONDE 👱🏻👱🏻♀️ STATE)
I like the video speed notice.
Thank you!
That would make perfect sense, add a few overpasses and I don't see why it would be a problem.
come to omaha if i were you and drive around interstate 80, 680, 480, us 75, and us 6 as well as us 275 to fremont nebraska
Yes a another kansas city vidio
It's asinine that the city won't allow those lights to go away. The overpasses are safer for pedestrians to cross anyway.
Also, the zip code to the right (east) of those lights is known as the murder capital of Missouri.
I agree, and did not know about the murder rate there, yikes!
They had signal cameras for a while at those intersections, but the higher court made them disable them. The cameras and signs remain. Putting a flyover there is just a matter of time. Fortunately, I live east of KC, so I don’t have to drive thru there very often. But yes, the murder/crime rate is bad in that part of the city...
did you go to arthur bryants?
No, I don't know what that is.
Council bluffs is across a bridge from me
Yikes, I hear that the state of Utah is currently asking for a covid 19 declaration from everyone entering the state.
@@Freewayjim Aw.... There IS Hazel's in St Joe. Some the THE best coffee for miles, but she doesn't have a drive-thru. 🙁
@@KCWanderlust There's always take out :)
Keep the video speed Great Feature
Will do, thanks!
Are you more of a Texas Driver?
No, I live in the Atlanta area.
I think they did it to use less of a footprint along the river, I don't really know, and it's still up as far as I know.
+FreewayJim, 17:26 I don’t think many people would like a Double-Deck freeway. To me, it’s really ugly.
Yay
Keep the speed notation.
I don't care for it.. but if others want it, I'll get used to it....... stay safe and healthy, Jim!
Stay safe.
Go chiefs and drive safe
You by me omaha ne
Hope to go back when it's not raining ;)
Out of all your videos I've watched, KC seems to have some of the worst freeways. Cause of the stoplights on parts of it and having no exit only signs in some spots. Seems kinda dangerous!
Those are a couple isolated things, overall KC's freeway system is very good.
Oof. Not the best soundtrack on this one.
There is not a single soundtrack I could use that would please everyone, it's just your cup of tea, which is fine, but that does not mean the soundtrack is bad or doesn't work well, because it does.
