ओसामा बिन लादेन के आदेश पर न्यूयॉर्क का वर्ल्ड ट्रेड सेंटर गिराए जाने से पहले प्रभाकरन के लोगों ने कोलंबो के भीड़ भरे इलाके में इसी नाम की उतनी ही प्रतीकात्मक इमारत नेस्तनाबूद की थी.
लेकिन ओसामा की तरह प्रभाकरन एक अमीर माँ बाप की संतान नहीं थे और न ही उन्होंने इस तरह के दुस्साहसी कामों को अंजाम देने के लिए किसी दूसरे देश की शरण ली थी. न ही ऐसे काम करने के लिए उन्हें किसी धर्म से प्रेरणा मिली थी. उनका एकमात्र धर्म था तमिल राष्ट्रवाद.
एक दशक के भीतर उन्होंने एलटीटीई को मामूली हथियारों के 50 से कम लोगों के समूह से 10 हज़ार लोगों के प्रशिक्षित संगठन में तब्दील कर दिया था जो एक देश की सेना तक से टक्कर ले सकता था.
वो दो भारतीयों को अपना प्रेरणास्रोत मानते थे - एक थे 1931 में फांसी पर झूलने वाले भगत सिंह और दूसरे थे आज़ाद हिंद फ़ौज बनाने वाले सुभाष चंद्र बोस.
