Its a froe. Yet, you've shown more craftsmanship in this simple tool than most blacksmiths put into their most masterful work. I remain impressed by your level of attention to detail and your simple approach to blacksmithing.
Very nice. I had a blacksmith friend who forged me a froe years ago. Thought I would make some hand-split cedar shingles. Sadly he passed away some time ago. Truly a lost art.
I've never enjoyed watching sporting events, a good movie is OK, but there are just not that many good movies. A craftsman at work, one who really knows what he is doing, now that is something worth watching and it always makes me envious.
I think I would consider this to be one of your best videos. Not only was the forging captured in wonderful detail, the interlude was surprisingly beautiful and moving. Top notch, my friend!
The more I think I am learning about Blacksmit skills in one year the more I learn and like your videos Sir.I do like the learning I have gained
Thank you Sir
Another fabulous tool made by the quietest Blacksmith that allows one to watch and learn his methods. The best Silent teacher in the smithing realm.
Wow. That is amazing work. True craftsmanship! I've been researching froe's and came across this video and I don't think anything I can buy from a store could compare to what you created.
I find watching these videos very relaxing for some reason.
such a useful tool and such a great way to show folks their potential,I always pick up on ways to improve my forging but this one in particular had me paying attention to so many things I want to use to improve myself, and there's alot in this video...thanks again for all you do!
It's deceiving how simple and easy you make it appear. A testament to your talent and experience!
I will likely never forge in my life. But that's not gonna stop me from learning how just in case I get the chance.
What fool can you dislike atout these videos ? they are wonderful and very informative.....
Probably people who tried it, failed to do it correctly and thought it was the video’s fault
12,000 jealous and miserable people, that’s who. This world is full of them. This guy is an excellent craftsman. I admire his work.
Possibly the world's best blacksmith.
What an awesome way to start my morning. Thank you and beautiful work again!
With each video you demonstrate new skills, very impressive! Thanks for sharing
My younger brother is half Ojibwe and I am building a birch bark canoe for him and his tribe. Man that thing would come in handy splitting cedar for it! As usual, excellent job and awesome workmanship that never fails to impress!!!!! Next a wooden mallet for it!
You have a good work ethic and very talented, you are one of the best blacksmith I have seen.
Your metal and wood working are incredible. I will be following your steps here to make one of these; I will use it to help cut pieces for handles. If only I could forge weld as easily as you do.
Wonderful work~ I love the set up of your videos, they are so relaxing, just to watch the steady and smooth craftsmanship of a piece of raw material be turned into something so useful and beautiful.
Your attention to detail is amazing. You are a master in your field. Many others will be influenced watching your videos.
Seriously, every time I watch one of your videos I am impressed by the craftsmanship, by the simple steps you take to make get something as perfect as you can. In this case, draw filing the socket to get it perfectly flat. Hat is off to you sir. I’m on board. Thanks for setting a simple non flashy example of quality. I also enjoyed the B roll. Great catch on the squirrel jumping between trees!
Good old Sciurus vulgaris. I was worried for a bit that it was one of those Carolina squirrels.
A useful tool, skilfully made. Great video thank you
Quite easily some of the best produced instructional videos on UA-cam. You are a pleasure to watch good sir, the pictures say it all.
I really enjoy watching your work.
a real pleasure to see your dexterity
There's a great video out there of someone using this tool to create roof tiles. Very interesting if you want to see some proper use of a froe!
In the UK they are called a Clever Bat, used for splitting Chestnut fencing posts,or long Ash poles, into fence rails
@@petergiles8987 I’ve only heard guys from the UK use the term froe just like over here across the pond.
They are mostly just used for making shingles here, although there are plenty of other legit uses.
I think the silence and serene feel of these videos is often what attracts me personally I am an axe person but watching you forge anything is almost therapeutic
Nice clean work as always TA!
It's very relaxing watching you work.
I laughed way to hard when you went full hulk mode on the blade with the 2x4. Always amazing work.
I love how you always have a demonstration at the end, I always wandered what that tool was froe
Very nice job, a handy tool to have around the homestead. Thanks Torbjorn!
Excellent, beautifully done. I throughly enjoy all your works
This piece of art of handwork is underrated these days.
I'm glad you showed what that tool is designed for, I had no clue.
Simply irresistable ! I hope become like you...in the futur !
I can't uderstand one thing, HOW somebody can dislike IT?
Torbjorn-your videos is amazing!
Normally some bitter and twisted individual filled with jealousy that they can't get close to the skill level.
Another lovely piece and great video, I love how your skills stretch into other fields like wood work and masonry
I love the garden interludes in your videos.
Great froe - I use these daily (I'm a bodger / green woodworker). They were originally used for shingle making and cleft chestnut fencing. You can control the direction of the split using the handle and a device called a "break or cleave break". They are often made from leaf spring (as the shape is easy to modify into a froe). I'd love to see more tools like this (scotch eyed auger for example).
That's so cool. I would love to have those skills you got. The things you do is awesome. Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
Fantastic job
Masterfully done, sir.
Beautiful video, Torbjörn.
The shock ax (it is called in Germany) looks great.
Been wanting one of these for a long time. Wish I had your knowledge, tools and skills so I could make one.
Thank you a lot for the amazing footage of the making of it! Craftmanship is always a treat to watch!
I really like all of your videos, always comfortable to watch and make me inspired to do it ... hopefully all the knowledge you provide will be beneficial for everyone.
Made a 15 cm froe to make kindling for the forge. It took me as long to make the drift (no power hammer available during the US lockdown)as it did to make the froe blade. Tack, georg
nicely done
It,'s a wonderful job. I love tools. Your a "rich man" having so beautiful set of tools and equipment, one for every task. I love it. Congrats' you are a genius man...!!!
He is the Best blacksmith out there! His craftsmanship is perfectly balanced between just enough hand craft and precision… the end result is simply the best
I think blacksmithing is a form of magic
You can tell a great craftsman when he makes a procedure look straightforward, this item is not easy to make and for me it is a joy to watch the way you plan each part of you work and then execute it well done !!!
I had no idea what you were making. I'm glad I watched to the end. Good video sir.
I need a Froe and it's been a while since I made one so I just watched this again...Back in the days when you were a baseball cap and a nose and a pair of hands....I still very much like your work and very much appreciate your videos. Cheers
what a beautiful garden, squirrels and delicious pumpkins
Beautiful work. You should forge an entire flatware set with each handle having a unique design
You`re the best of the best! I wish you to looking forward! I very like your wonderful works!
The Master at work,........ love it
Best blacksmithing videos on you tube! I love the nature shots in the middle.
Just love the workmanship 👍🏽

A froe is a simple tool...shingles, beams, billets, furniture parts. You sir, have made a beautiful tool.
That was awesome always love watching your vids.
Wonderful as always!
Your accuracy with bladed tools impresses me and scares me at the same time
Бестолковая вещь. Прекрасная работа мастера.
эта бестолковая вещь используется для изготовления гонтин на деревяные кровли...
Beautiful craftsmanship
In my part of the world, a froe is associated most commonly as a tool used by pioneers and settlers for making cedar roofing shingles.
Now you need to make a proper maul for it. A good mallet is a fun project too.
Had to look again after fev years when I saw this video for the first time and had to ask - mild steel ( hot rolled ore cold?) as blade - is it hard enough for long time use ore bether to meke it from car spring steel (bladfjær)?
Mild steel hot or cold rolled is the same stuff when you heat it up and forge it. This is not a blade, it should never cut any fibers, just split the wood. It will probably last quite well, but sure spring steel will make it last forever I guess. I wouldn't bother to heat treat the spring steel. That's my thoughts...
Grandpa said he use a froe to make shingles, this one is on my to do list, beginner blacksmith I'm learning.
Excellent video. The power hammer really helps. Among other uses that tool is a much safer way to make kindling than using a hatchet.
Thanks! It can be but the main purpose is to make wood shingles or make some precision cleaving for a wood project.
I know I've commented on your videos before(under a different moniker most like), but I'll tell the truth again. I love how you go out of your way, when you expressly don't need to, to make things mostly the old way. That handle for the Froe? Could've been turned on a lathe. Yet I notice you're not only trying to show not the process and what you use, but keep it relaxing and entertaining for the viewership as well. My hat is off to you again, sir. Keep it up :)
I like your tecqunic, .
Wonderful video. Thanks a lot for craftsmen like these.
Good idea !
A very nice demonstration of your skill once again and a very useful tool. Top marks.
A great tool. It can be used to split firewood, but it really comes in handy when you are crafting something out of wood as it allows you an unusual amount of control over how the wood splits.
Without a doubt my favorite forging channel on UA-cam. The quality and craftsmanship is of the absolute best. Torbjörn Åhman are you a full time smith?
Thank you! No, I'm not... but it has become a significant part of my life now... not sure where this will take me :)
Great job ! I very love it
