  • Interview With First Woman Rapper MC Sha Rock; Her Legacy And Hip-Hop History
Sha-Rock is the first female emcee-rapper of hip hop culture "on wax" or record on vinyl from its inception in the 1970s. She began as a local b-girl, or breakdancer, in the earliest days of South Bronx hip hop scene and culture in the late 1970s. The Funky 4 + 1, Sha-Rock being the plus one, had their first significant hit with the 12-inch single "Rapping and Rocking the House" on Sugarhill Records (1979) as well as "That's the Joint" (1980) which both appeared on national television. As an early pioneer affiliated with the Zulu Nation, MC Sha-Rock inspired a style of rapping emulated and made notable by Run DMC called the "echo chamber".

What an awesome interview! Now to be fair, I'm just some white Swedish rich man's kid, but i have to say that I absolutely adore hip hop culture and the freedom of expression, love and respect it stands for. It was thanks to my breakdance teacher that I got introduced to Spoonie Gee and subsequently the Funky 4+1 and all of the pioneers and I have to say that you have all inspired me immensely! I hope to someday also be able to express my thoughts in a similar fashion, one that makes people think in a more positive and understanding way. Sorry for the long ramble, just wanted to express my admiration for Sha-Rock and the hip hop culture!

Sha Rock paved the way for all 90's female rappers.
(Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah, Ladybug Mecca)

But Queen Latifah is one the first female rappers which mean she shouldn’t be out in the category of ladybug Mecca or Lauryn hill. She rapped in the 80s and early 90s. She gave birth to the 90 rappers tho.

Never knew about her. Sadly and I considered myself a hip hop head real talk. Much respect to a queen and pioneer. She gives me Mary J vibes

She is one of the all time best on the mic, with great timing, syncopation, fluidity, and a hip hop pioneer. She has not been sufficiently rewarded for her impact, and this frustration comes through in the interview. When he asked her what the Bronx was like back in the day and a few other questions, she didn't answer directly, but defaulted into a mode of proclaiming her role in hip hop history. That sadly exemplifies her predicament.

Love Sha Rock she's a beautiful Sista....Make sure Disco King Mario is mentioned in your story Miss Sha Rock so many people try to hide that brothas contributions to the culture. Dana Dane is a master storyteller one of Brooklyn's dopest Emcees Im sure duke gonna have the storyline poppin ALL TRUTH ALL FACTS...Also if you know Cholly Rock(original b boy from the 70s) then you should also tap Fat Wayne for consultation because he's one of the ONLY cats out here trying to correct the false narratives about the culture that people keep perpetuating....Peace and Blessings.
