Alt-J is known for being funky and creative, somewhat hard to understand at first, but once you read the lyrics the song becomes clear as a bell. Many people fall in love with their songs not knowing the lyrics, and being blown away when they finally do. The group is from the UK, but they do take influence from American music as well as other cultures. They tend to use percussions very thoughtfully, like in Every Other Freckle or, one of their most popular songs, fitzpleasure. They even released a hip hop collaboration album Best enjoyed with flowers 🤙
Great video! Alt J are lots of fun. This song is based on choosing someone deceased that you would like to date. (When they were alive of course). The first women in the army uniform is based on Lee Miller, a surrealist photographer who later became a photographer in WW2. She is amazing. The next is Anne Boleyn, wife of Henry VIII (referenced in the song as "Henry Tudor", and the final woman is Sylvia Plath, the American author.
And you're right - they are English. Their name comes from the keyboard shortcut on Macs that produces a triangle. The band makes many references to triangles in their songs and videos (Check out Tessalate) No particular reason for the triangles other than they really like the shape.
Alt j is also an excel command to begin a macro sequence. If you'll notice the eye on the coins is what is causing the women to change clothes and there are no changes without flashing back to the coins. In the end they are becoming unengaged as the coins or disc start to flatten
@@RobertIngersoll I never knew the official meaning of the song. I sometimes prefer my interpretation. I had worked out it was about European history. From the woman dressed as a soldier and the woman dancing and preying in front of the Tudor crest. These opinions and conversations are what I love about reaction channels.
@@dishields7808 I agree. I find others' interpretations fascinating. And once an author or artist puts something out there, interpretations are what keeps it interesting and alive.
I was struck by the choreography as well. The dancing is quite intuitive but clues about each woman are added seamlessly, like Sylvia vigorously typing on a keyboard near the end.
@@dishields7808 I didn't expect a response 🤣 Thanks. I always had a semi-eclectic musical habit. Must've listened to it a half dozen times that night. I'll check out your suggestion.
Hearing new music is never an embarrassment. It's a gift. I joined your channel because there are about 10 songs I look for on reaction channels. You had all 10 and I liked your reactions. I knew my taste was more eclectic than most, but based on those 10 reactions I thought you would like my request, even if they're not mainstream.
I never read lyrics on songs. I prefer my own interpretations. I've only actually learned some of the lyrics by listening to your reactions. I think some newer artist use their voices more as an instrument than as a language. Alt j being the best example. Glass Animals is the same way.

The DC in the lyrics stands for Deadcrush. Its referencing Elizabeth "Lee" Miller and Anne Boleyn as their "deadcrushes".

Alt-J is so beautifully unique, would love to see your thoughts on their song MS or The Actor
You're the only reason I heard this. Was going to skip it, but left it playing.
I actually like it.
You would probably like the previous alt j song he played. It's called Something Good

OK. Thanks again. Good "cruising" groove.
This song is about the band member's crushes on people through out history.

Sounds like a blend of Hip-hop and traditional middle eastern songs.
"You're my DC Lee" is "You're my Dead Crush Lee (Miller).
Quite interesting Harri. Thanks for being brave enough to try new things. 🌺✌️
Second listening was better 😊❤😅 Harri, love your open mind 😇👍❤️
Love it
