Ghostface's Ironman had a bunch of instrumentals like that. 260 being my favorite. But I'd say Roc Marciano really mastered it
alchemist has been on that vibe for time too
@@snapperdile yeah he did. Rotten Apple on the Prodigy collab album was ill
@@JoePesciVSBillyBatts 2 gethaaaa babyyy...thas my dudes first beat he ever made Ahahahahahahaha. He didn’t master anything. Trust me lmaoooo
@@snapperdile dude how old are y’all? Premier, 9th, Pete, madlib, RZA, Muggs, Screw, DJ Paul...etc etc etc I could go on for days. Madlib is the original looper. That’s not up for debate.
@@discowolf25 2 getha baby isn’t a loop instrumental though. Great song
Everybody mentioning so many people but not near enough MF Doom and Madlib mentions. Dudes did It in a nasty way that had that same grimy crate diggin feel
What I like about them is that they find
The most crazy loops
I literally discovered DOOM as a producer first.
Doom had such unique drums tho! Madlib definitely was masterful with this specific style
@@ndubb100 that would be the SP-303. It’s the only way to get that sound. If you can get one- do it. It’s limitations are wild but, they’re the best part. Check my channel, I’ve been using it since 05 cuz Dilla made donuts on it. I think it’s just one track he did on sumn else and it’s the very last track (or first, cuz…donuts).
@@discowolf25 Huh I always thought Dilla used the MPC
The urge to add a kick and snare to that beat must have been overwhelming :-)
Right
si!
At least for the second on..
Yea this is too easy lol
@@kosekibeats llllo
This style is so hard but elegant at the same time like a tuxedo and Jordans
nice way to put it.
Well said
ua-cam.com/video/uI7TXHC58Xk/v-deo.html
Roc Marci definitely brought this style to the forefront...
When I would do this years ago at home around my boys they would hate it ...
Now Everyone is missing drums .... crazy how things go
Nah alchemist
Its actually Madlib who started the wave, honestly
We could Say Marley Marl or the Rza because they were first ,I said Roc because he was doing the majority of his projects like that before the griselda movement and other underground rappers ..
He reshaped the direction of the last wave of underground Rap
@@bigcarm1474 no doubt bro, u could listen to Estee Nack givin the credit to Roc on the new wave sound, it is what it is. Peace bro!
KA definitely did it before roc, I remember an interview where KA said roc was telling him to put drums on a beat but KA basically wanted to keep it how it was
Earl Sweatshirts production has also been light on the drums in his recent discography
This Has Been the Staple of What RZA has Done and Who he's Influenced. Salute to the Madlib, Dilla (RIP) Daringer, Alchemist and Kanye who Carries on Tradition
Roc Marciano as Well. Finding rhe Perfect parts is the KEY
Where has RZA done this? Track names? Only song I can think of is All I Got Is You by Ghost.
@@lonniesharpe9720 hollow bones, north star (jewels), verbal intercourse (kinda), black widow pt.2, biochemical equation (partly) just to name a few.

@@NYCLASSICTV Yeah man, your right. I went back and listened to a few of those tracks now. I guess I just never noticed it in the past because it sounded organic.
So many people don't realize how hard this style is.
Not that hard you just have to dig for great samples
@@nik_ilic I mean I feel like that’s the talent of guys like alchemist and madlib not necessarily their complex chops but their ability to find great samples. I think that itself is a skill.
It is a super skill
the bottom line? when you know what to look for and have dope records you can do that. some of the illest classics are straight up raw dog. if you dig for Engelbert Humperdinck records this isn’t for you.
It isn't hard, but it isn't easy. they say you need 1000 hours of work to be great; 10000 to be a master. part of what makes it easier to find dope samples is to listen to everything you can. like Premo said "If it moves you, sample it". anything goes, I've sampled strings from Beethoven songs, synth lines from Britney or Lady Gaga, dark ominous shit from Black Sabbath or other metal bands, drums from funk, rock, themes, bhangra, merengue, reggae... there are literally billions of artists out there and 100s of billions of songs. randomly pick a letter of the alphabet and see which artists come up in your search, and pick someone you've never heard of or in a language you don't understand, and soon enough, you'll find a dope sample. the more obscure the song, the less likely it is that someone else found it before you. Happy Digging, y'all!
they’re just raw samples not always necessarily ‘drumless’, a lot of those have drums; sometimes light, sometimes heavy. enhanced by the kick and snare added by i’ve always said, if a sample’s dope, leave it and let the magic work✨👌🏾some of the dopest classics from the late ‘80’s early mid nineties from our favorite producers/legends. salute.
Drumless simply refers to not adding extra drums, a sample with very heavy percussion would still be deemed drumless, seen as the producer who sampled it didn’t add anything on top like traditionally
My favorite sample style personally. Allows the artist to shine and bring out the entire track. Glad it’s got a wave again today
ua-cam.com/video/uI7TXHC58Xk/v-deo.html
Madlib flipped this style hard back in the day.
Back in which day? The day several years after Muggs?
@@davidpaul4234 I never said Madlib was the first, and neither was Muggs. Bobby "Bobcat" Irvin flipped a drumless sample on LL Cool J's "The Doo Wop" in 1987. Take it for what it is.
@citizencain01 "The Doo Wop" most definitely has drums layered into it (unless you have an OG demo version or reference track with no drums on it). That's my favorite track on the album.
@@citizencain01 The Doo Wop most definitely has drums layered into it (unless you have an OG demo version or reference track with no drums on it). That's my favorite track on the album.
@@l.ahlgren7752 You're absolutely right, I stand corrected. The Doo Wop was my favorite track on BAD as well.
Roc Marciano absolutely pioneered this prior to Griselda but the love and close ties have influenced them as well
ua-cam.com/video/uI7TXHC58Xk/v-deo.html
Roc Marci made it trendy again , Griselda blew it out of underground
I was surprised Roc wasn't mentioned
earl too
You beat me to it
@@cIiffe earl was doing it because of rappers like KA and Roc Marci.
@@Siillky no doubt he was inspired but i’m just saying he helped bring it to more ears
Another good way to make these types of beats is by chopping on the drum hits in the sample, like that Dilla on “Don’t Cry”. It’s such a smooth sound, and I’m glad it’s coming back
That's not the same thing. You're literally including drums on purpose
@@baL88537 exactly. Which still gives it a completely different vibe from the style being covered in this video...
Roc Marciano, Planet Asia & Hus Kingpin (even RZA, Doom or Ghostface did it long ago) they paved the way for the likes of Griselda to be poppin
I always liked when Ghostface would rhyme over straight up doo wop songs
Lol, I been making beats like this for years and had no idea it was a specific style or technique. Awesome work as usual!
Same here
Same I didn't do it on purpose tho
So you dont make beats, you just loop musics.....
@@MrStaano when you find a fly loop… sometimes that’s all you need.. AND hip-hop music was made from looping music partner!! Do the knowledge!!
@@lgpatterson6259 I said you didnt make a beat if you only loops, Puncho. So dont trip thats just technically correct. Right ?? I know more about hip hop than you since i'm older and grew up on this shit. Thanx for playing tho. Keep looping musics, Puncho. hahahah !!!
I think this is the first time that your video is sponsored... But it seems like more than just a sponsor because it's content-driven and it fits your channel. And hej you also have to live from something! I like it!
yeah definitely something that my audience wants, if not I wouldn't put it up.
@@mpchead I rather sponsors than ads. My wifi sucks so a sometimes I'm waiting for a minute to get back to the vid.
An ad at the start/and or end of the vid is not as troublesome for us with dodgy internet. ✌️
I really just keep wondering every time that how you can be so very knowledgeable as well as so very humble at the same time, that you just keep sharing your knowledge with others. Thanks givings for all such great works you keep doing.
Thanks for the words 🙏🏼
J88 you are right bro...sharing is caring...I come from Poland from a very small town and i fell in love with hip hop culture in late 90s when i was 16...I always wanted to do beats but nobody was sharing this knowledge rather to keep it to themselves not to mention how to use a mpc...im plus 20years deep and still didn't achive 'that warm analogue sound' that i have heard on this 90s boom bap techniques but i guess you need to visit a studio with SSL and other magic analogue mastering GEAR. Thank God to people like Marlowe Digs and others sharing this content to help out people who struggle with it...Blessings for Marlowe Digs!!!....it is a beautiful feeling hearing his instrumentals that resonates with the whole world! Please support this artist because he truly deserves it!One love!
I love this style no cap without the drums just the sample this is real music these people that listen to new rap don’t realize it
This comes back to origins of hip hop when old Dejays just used to loop breaks with records.. thats part of the LoopDigga philosophy and Donuts influence.. then you can see other producers..
They made a good choice paying you to sponsor them. Because of you, I am now getting a tracklib subscription
Id say the no drums was revived by Roc Marc; but Griselda blew it up
You ain’t lying. Roc Marc did that.
Roc
marci did that shit first to success I wouldn’t even say griselda made it popular since marci been at it for so long
planet asia, drug dynasty 🙄
@@erman_ Durag Dynasty🙄
Props to daringer and alchemist. They been making dope beats.
Big fan of Tracklib, delighted to watch these
dude i love how straightforward this video is. beat is hella nice as always
Drumless is the future of Underground Hip Hop, Roc Marci and KA the goats of it
Shoutout to Ka 💪 man is a pioneer
They are the best ones to do it with Willie the Kid. They tell stories!!!
Can't wait for their Metal Clergy collab
I was a producer for years and layering was my favorite thing to do. It all boils down to time spent enjoying records, dropping that needle, and finding something nasty. Then, once you've built a decent library - find the samples that go together (the hard part, LOL)
Snake samples were next level shit. Great series, bro!
Ah man that Bobby Digital. Brought it back for me
A great example of drumless beats is "Nobles" by The Alchemist featuring Earl Sweatshirt and Navy Blue. Such a great beat with great rhymes spit over it that make up for the missing drums like you mentioned! Loved the video!
Great video bro !! The pioneer of this style of drum less beats is the legendary Roc Marciano, most of his albums are made with this approach and he's very inspiring...
Its actually Madlib who started the wave, honestly
@@balmain-i3e Yeah, and RZA and Ghost as well
The best usage of this style, to me, has always been RZA. ESPECIALLY when he does it for Ghost...it's just something AMAZING that happens when you put an old 70s soul sample underneath Ghostface and Raekwon rhymes
Please... I got to producers Prince Paul and Bomb Squad, After them is Dilla, DOOM, and Madlib
Premo.....and Dilla are better than Rza.
GFK- All That I Got Is You.... Is a great example of this style.
One of the most impressive things about these drumless beats especially pertaining to Griselda is their ability to maintain track presence with a vocal sample in the back. Songs like big ass bracelet, gods don’t bleed, etc are a real testament to how well they fill out tracks
Roc Marciano kept this technique alive for years
i am so glad you went into the history of the drumless hip-hop beats used by other artists (Kanye, Wutang, Nas, Jay Electronica, Tribe, Mobb Deep, , MF-Doom, Planet Asia, Ghostface Killa, and countless others was notorious for this. So glad you had Brooklyn Ka on here. This was dope.
I feel like it's a little confusing to say these examples have "no drums" because they absolutely do and in fact it's the subtlety of the drums and how the sample chop leverages the drums that makes this style so addictive.
dont forget roc marci, he the rakim of this new wave
btw sick segment!
Marlow never dissapoint! 🙏🏼
This is such a beautiful way of sampling that’s coming back Westside Gunn, LNDN DRGS, Larry June and even Freddie Gibbs all bringing this way of music back. It’s so hard though because for me I always feel the urge to add drums to a sample.
I can't say I am a huge fan of the drumless style personally but it is def interesting to learn about as many styles as possible. Informative vid as always.
Yeah it'll be informative for sure and just great to watch for curious people that wanna know about the production side of Hip Hop.
Yeah i am the same, I really like the older Alchemist beats better...I am always waiting for the drums to drop... but alc is a production legend..
I like the style, but not the raps. I’m always taken in by music with these kind of beats, but it’s always the same bleak-ass flows and lyrical content for a whole album. Gets too heavy for me, then I start to get bored too.
For me it depends on the sample, the sample is literally what makes a drum less beat dope or not, because certain samples become fucking annoying when repeated for like 4 minutes without any drums.
Sampling is back!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Not only grizelda... also you got roc Marciano he revived it first and Freddy Gibbs also raps on beats like that
Great video🔥🔥🔥
Also Roc Marciano has been producing crazy drum less beats for years!
Keep up the great content :)
That intro got me so hyped! Feels like the school I never went to haha can't wait to see the more of these videos man
Good luck with this new project with tracklib! It seems that is going to be great.
RZA, Madlib, Alchemist, Roc Marci, KA...I love this sound.
I always felt Alc and Roc Marci really made it what is cause they were the first to create a majority of an album in this style.
Maybe I'm wrong. Don't know. Always absolutely loved it.
ua-cam.com/video/uI7TXHC58Xk/v-deo.html
Your videos always inspire me
The art of sampling is beast in itself. working samples can be a task some easier then others.
You're so awesome for showing us your secrets to the game. I for one appreciate it brother. when I get good I'm going to share too.
Thanks for putting, "Sampling Phenomena" together! It really is helpful. I am looking forward for the next one.
Beat Butcha is the mastermind behind this new style!
Man much respect to anyone able to do this and resist the urge to add drums, I legit can't do it lol!
The Alchemist - III Advised is perfect example for this. He chopped the sample pretty good, probably you wouldn't even recognize the chops.
Alchemist is wack. Dude is a RZA rip off...

Such a dope series idea. Love this. Forgot how dope that Rex Ryan joint is
Marlow, I been seeing you on here for a few weeks now and you are consistently putting out some of the best quality content on UA-cam. The production you are doing and how you are doing it is first rate from every point of view. As an older person I really enjoy how your tie my old school world into the new technology. Would you mind doing a quick video showing what you are using to create the actual videos? Camera's, interface, software, etc. I am slowly working my way back through your older content so if there is already a video on this I may run across it. Thanks for what you are doing.

My favorite style of sampling. Usually how i make most of my beats
A "no 808" challenge be dope
Alchemist flipped this style the best in the 2010s. Just letting samples breathe on their own. Usually foreign joints. Not a huge fan of Daringer but hes got some heat.
big ups to alchemist fosho but tbh i think madlib is king at this wave
Yeh was gonna say... Alchemist has been doing this. Pretty sure Daringer got his style from ALC.
It's actually Roc Marciano
Alchemist even in these days still involved in Boldy James project and Earl Sweatshirt recent one...As Marlowe said it is great for emcee to do some technical wordplay and creates uniqe mood in it's simplicty! All mentioned here did work with this style and that's why Griselda is already bigged up by best ones from 90's
Some tracks off covert coup are done in this style
This series gonna be nice
Thanks for your work man.

Apollo brown does this and sometimes adds subtle elements to bring it together, skillfully chopped work.
Truly blessed to have your knowledge heard
A lot of newer rappers have been doing this as or something similar as well. They'll have no drums for the whole first half of the song. I like it. Especially with really soulful samples and the delayed modern drums
Roc Marci and Ka, who dig with eachother, are the real style masters of this shit
