I just now completed this book, my fourth by Hampton Sides. He is a most engaging writer and the numerous passages in “Ghost Soldiers” of bleakness, hardship and later heroism are both inspirational and riveting. Thank you for this review, and I agree, Sides’ book, along with Grann’s “The Wager” are both enthralling reads. “Ghost Soldiers” absolutely deserves a film treatment!
@@mckinnonmaddox7650 Some wonderful reading adventures await you! “Blood and Thunder” (Kit Carson and the opening of the American West by way of “Manifest Destiny”), “In the Kingdom of Ice” (The ill fated polar voyage of the USS Jeanette in the late 18th century), “On Desperate Ground” (The harrowing battle of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War)-all are superb. Also watch for Mr. Sides’ release of “The Wide, Wide Sea” in April on the final, tragic voyage of the ship Resolution and the intrepid explorer, James Cook.
