    I have planted a dove sunflower field, 8 acres, in Ohio for about 8 years, I spray roundup and 24d in the late fall, prowl, roundup and spartan pre emergent and beyond when they are about 4 leaves. I have pretty good success but nothing as clean as your field, good job. How can I improve my weed control?

      I follow the same burn down regimen, just in the spring. The biggest factor I have found is timing is critical with the pre emergent. You have to have a rain within a few days for it to be effective. I try to wait until the 6-8 leaf stage to apply a post emergent. That way, the weeds die around the same time the flowers take off and shade the rows.

    Curious how you were looking this year. Field looks good! We are just north of you and had the same drought. I think the heavy potassium I did this year carried the sunflowers on through.

      It has been awful, a lot of corn did not make a crop it got burnt up so bad. Good luck to you with your field this year and send some bird south our way every chance you get!

    It’s pricey but a heavy rate of zidua will control the pigweed. Some are using up to 11oz of zidua to the acre along with dual and are not having to come back for a post spray staying dang near 100% clean. 11oz is 60% over label rate but Kansas state has done studies with it on sunflowers at these high rates with success. I’ve been using metoolachlor, prowl, and Spartan then coming back with cleth and imox. Next year I think I’m going to pony up and get zidua so I don’t have to come back for a second pass. Plant it and forget it

    • @longdoveclub549
      @longdoveclub549  Місяць тому

      @@adammullins4528 I just can’t stomach the price of zidua. I have neighbors spraying it and they still have pigweed. They might not be spraying at that high rate but for that price, I’ll rotate and deal with what little bit I have. I may have to bite the bullet one day to control it but, I’ll have to go up on dues and I don’t want to do that. Thanks for the feedback!

    Do you cut your corn and if so, what do you use to cut it?

      In the past I have just used a rotary cutter and cut 1-2 rows at a time. I recently purchased a 2-row corn picker so, I will be picking it for deer corn as well as cutting some.

    What kind of seed drill/planter do use for your sunflowers. Looking into buying one

      I bought a 4-row kinze no till planter on 30” rows and rebuilt it this year. Prior to that I used a 2-row John Deere 71 flex 30” rows.

      @@ashton3027 We hunt the afternoon opening day after a meal. The dues are $400 this year for the whole season. We hunt 5 scheduled hunts first season and we hunt when the birds show in late season which they always do. Typically our late season is really, really good.

      @@patty8039 I start collecting dues in February and they are due March 1st. I do allow guests to hunt after opening day but it is rare to have an opening. I consider my field full at 25 guns after opening day to give members the best opportunity for success.
