In the 2010s, Delta made a major decision for their future fleet: to move towards more Airbus-orientated planes instead of Boeing; while they'll fly the 737 MAX one day, largely all other aircraft types will come from Airbus. However, was a decision to fly Airbus planes their own choice, or was it a decision they were forced into given movements from Boeing that have failed to see a new clean sheet middle of the market airliner produced, one Delta would've snapped up at a moment's notice.

@@dogukantosun5547 no they are not. The 757 is an old dog that will never go away because Boeing won’t make a replacement for them. The Airbus 321Neos provide somewhat of a replacement. As a weekly flyer on Delta I already miss the 757. Earlier year Delta pulled all the 757’s from our local airport route and reassigned them to some international routes. We were all spoiled for several years flying this excellent plane for the multiple shuttles per day between Pensacola and Atlanta. Now we have these new’ish 737-900 with a rather stark and strange layout. Fortunately the flight time is short as these planes are quite uncomfortable. Looking forward to the new AB arrival.

With the absorption of MD, it transformed from an engineering oriented company to a much diverse and short sighted company. There were issues with scandals associated with air force refueling plane acquisition and product quality, battery issue of 787, MCAS of 737, certification issue of 777X, and on and on. Some issues are so fundamental and raised questions on its ability to perform. One good example is failure of the initial 777X static load test. Nearly all plane development programs passed this test with adequate margin except the 777X initial test. Buying the A321neo variants is one thing, but I do think if Delta can convince Airbus to build a 6,800 nautical mile range A330-800neo (aka. less fuel capacity), Delta could sign up for 60 planes to replace the 767 once and for all.

The 757 is hard to replace from a Pilots perspective. You can get the aircraft in and out of any airfield hot or cold without a performance penalty. The 737 from the 800 to 900 along with any A320 to 321 can’t do that. So to replace it with one of those like swapping a Hellcat for a Camry. For those outside of aviation to get the concept.
    767-300/400 they’re magnificent, for a replacement anything 330 would be considerable. 767-300 A330-800, 767-400 A330-900 neo.
Adding the A350-1000 would be a good option.
For the 717 don’t send to the scrapyard yet put them in place of the CRJ.
Add more A220-300s and potential 500s to the fleet in place of older 319s and 320s.

Delta has always avoided larger aircraft where it can. It got rid of the 747 every time it acquired it. It dropped the 777 as soon as the pandemic hit. They like smaller large aircraft throughout their history. The 787 adds nothing to what they cannot get from Airbus. The 757 they love because of the range and the smaller plane it is, allowing them to serve overseas markets no one else can with smaller long range aircraft. Why they have odd locations in Europe which are served by only the 757. Which forced Bombardier to sell the entire C-Series program to Airbus for the sum of one Canadian dollar and the C-Series was renamed and rebranded as the Airbus 220 with Delta original order to assembled in its facility in Alabama near to Delta's HQ in Atlanta, GA. Probably got a better deal if they bought a bunch of 737's or X number of 737's per year using a blanket PO. At least for SW, this means that their fleet is pretty much standardized and nearly the same across all aircraft they fly (with variances in specific models of the 737). Some airlines buy whomever gives them the best deal, some stick with a single mfr, some have a mixed fleet because they bought other airlines over a period of time and acquired their fleets. Or in the case of some of the really budget airlines (the no-name ones, not Spirit or Frontier for example) they buy second hand jets from the big airlines after they decide to get rid of them, which could be 5-10 years.
I mean it would be the same if you were a truck fleet manager and you went to Ford and said "I want to buy 100 new Ford trucks" versus say 40 from Ford, 40 from Chevy and 20 Chrysler.

A new $1-2 billion carbon-composite wing could be used in the A321neo-plus-plus, compared to $15 billion for a completely new design. The new wing is made from composite material. It is first seen as an upgrade to the existing, mostly metal A320 family wing, which was already upgraded many times. Airbus has already composite wings on the A350, but this will be an enhanced, new design with highly automated manufacturing suitable for inexpensive high-volume production. Announced in January 2016, a €44.8 million facility was built in Filton, with 300 engineers. The new wing design and tests take place in this Filton facility. Other Airbus locations in the UK, France, Spain and Germany are working with 30 partners on this wing project.
In May 2021, Airbus announced that for improved aerodynamic performance the wing will be longer and thinner with folding wingtips to access existing airport gates. By May 2021, assembly of the first demonstrator was to start in the coming weeks, as the project should be completed by 2023 before an eventual product launch. A “radical” A320 makeover is expected to cost over 4 billion euros ($4.9 billion), significantly less than the estimates of $15 billion to $20 billion for an all-new Boeing design. Due to the increased length and increased lift, the new wings could also be used on an Airbus A322, an A321 lengthened by 4 passenger seat-rows, being studied by Airbus."

The 757 will continue to fly I will die on this hill it took covid for the Md-88/90 to be retired and delta was one of the last major airlines flying those, airlines still fly the 747. There's no reason why it wouldn't keep flying the 757. Plus nothing can touch its range, power, and cargo weight. The 737 Max 10 ya its nice but it has less range and its smaller. The 321neo yes it has range but it you cant load it like a 757 its again doesn't have the range or the cargo capacity. I work on 757, 737, and 321's and I'm telling you rn nothing stands close to that plane its still top dog, yes everything else is more fuel efficient and the 757 is a pig when it comes to fuel consumption but it makes it noticeably faster than the rest, screw efficiency we got to make that power and performance. I like the plane plus its soooooooo easy to load.

I'm seriously shocked 😲 that neither Airbus nor Boeing have committed to building a replacement for the A380 or the 75 and 767. I know Covid happened, but that shouldn't stop the design of large planes. Further more, both manufacturers are so behind in delivery with already placed orders, I wouldn't be surprised of a Chinese or Russian one on the market if this keeps up.

That decision will bring them a major market share for the US. Why? Simply because Boeing is failing on Quality on all their Aircraft types with massive delays on all Aircrafts from 737 via 787 to 777.
First airlines start to stuggle, as the new gen 777 should be delivered this year but has massiv delays. However, Airbus order books are filled up for the next decade. So other Airlines will not have a chance to get short term Aircrafts from Boeing.

Unlike Boeing, who, for economic reasons, would have to start from scratch, it would be relatively easy for Airbus to modify the A320 airframe to create a true successor for the 757.
However, there is one major hurdle for both Boeing and Airbus. There is not a single suitable engine currently available to power one!
I dont even know if there is a firm timeline from any manufacturer to produce one.
Without a firm commitment from an aircraft manufacturer, I suspect that they may not even proceed. Unless that is, that one engine manufacturer wants to be in the position to corner the market when they are needed.
On the other hand, they risk their competition coming to market with a more advanced design if they complete their development too many years before there is any demand for those engines.
Do Boeing start development without the certainty of those engines?
They are already suffering because of the delays and issues with the engines for the much delayed 777x, delays which will inevitably eat into the time before it warrants its own upgrade or even replacement. This could significantly reduce the number of years production iver which to recover their development costs.
Even now, it looks if the 787 in its current form may barely recover its development costs if at all. They may even still be being recovered on an upgraded 787, which based on ususl model cycles could under normal circumstances be due at least an announcement.
Or, do they wait for the engines before starting the development, only to find that Airbus have something suitable many years before them.
Not only would Airbus have something to market much sooner because it would be based on a current design, but their development costs would be a fraction of those for a new design.
With the order book they have, along with the well documented supply issues, unless they feel the need to respond to any Boeing development, there is a reduced incentive for Airbus to proceed first, especially since they know that their development would take a fraction of the time to deliver than any design from Boeing could.
I think that history in the future will use the situation. Boeing now fund themselves in as support for the statement 'Failure to plan is planning to fail'!

Just curious, how so? The XLR? Boeing could do that too if it stripped out most of the MTOW and added fuel tanks. That plane is a marketing plane and nothing more. It will be a miserable flying experience in 10+ hours in a small narrowbody. The loss of cargo space will take a large profit margin from airlines. There are some niche markets for it like the niche markets for the A380. There is not one aircraft family that Airbus has ever taken the lead in. The ONLY thing AIrbus has ever been historically first in was fly by wire. Airbus hasn't made a MoM 757 replacement either. The 757 was a very unique aircraft. And it wasn't just because of its size. Its design and engines made it the sports car of the sky. That isn't just a benefit for pilots, it allows it to operate heavy in high altitude and temp climates. There is nothing Airbus has that competes with that, nor with Boeing.

@@topgun9666Take off your Boeing blinkers and take note that
      - the A321XLR is selling and Boeing doesn't have an aircraft to compete with it
      - long range narrow body aircraft, such as the A321XLR, is the way of the future as they open up point to point services between destinations where larger wide body aircraft are not economical.
      - fly by wire is not the only significant innovation introduced by Airbus. They were the first to introduce a twin engined wide body aircraft and did so in the 1970s.
      - the A220 fills a segment of the market where Boeing does not have an offering.
      - Airbus has already taken the lead in terms of orders with the A320 family outselling the B737 despite coming to the market much later than Boeing.
