What's fascinating is that a lot of these athletes had success early before suffering quite a few years of non-success before coming back again stronger. This applies for Klammer, Cuche, Feuz, Eberharter, Müller and to a lesser extent Russi as well. Also i think Roland Collombin needs a honorable mention but that might just be my Swiss bias
No no it's not our Swiss bias. In just 4 years of professional career Collombin was able to win 8 DH (including Wengen and Streif twice), 2 DH cups and a silver Olympic medal. Imagine what he could have done and the possible legendary rivalry with Klammer and Russi, without that damned crash in val d'Isere at the age of 24. Our fearless Roland! Maybe it was kind of inevitable because he was risking like crazy and sometimes he used to party the night before of the race! We will never know what more he could have done in alpine skiing but he surely deserves an honourable mention.

Sorry man, you forgot Dominik Paris: the 3rd most victorious downhill skier of all times, ahead of "monsters" like Cuche, Zurbriggen, Maier or Feuz... Between all: 4 wins in Kitzbühel and 7 in Bormio...!!! For sure not the GOAT, but between in the best 10s...

It's very hard to compare skiers over time... For me klammer is my favourite, my best skier. However klammer himself has said, you can't compare skiers from the 60s to the late 70s or the 90s 2000s up to today it's impossible. Skis, boots, clothing, training, everything has changed. Skis today are built to carve a turn, skis of the late 60-70s were not. So does that mean a skier of the 60s better because they didn't have any help from the skis? NO. You ski with what you have at the time that's all. What I would say is this, who did Great racers of their time race against. By that I mean, who else was around at their time that was also called a great a legend of their time? And how many times did the legends of their time beat the others? We all have our favourite, as I said mine is klammer, that's my opinion, mine not yours. I was a ski instructor in Austria for 6 seasons from 1983-88 the skis I had then are like planks of wood against those of today but it's what we had at the time, then they were the very best available. The one thing I would say is this, go and try a ski from the 1960s, 80s even 2005 and today you will understand one thing, if past skiers used todays equipment and training they would be even better today than they were in their time. Does that mean they are the best, NO all it means is the past legends of this wonderful sport would have been even better than they were...
@@r1oo1 That's true and nobody can tell you how good Feuz or Svindal would have been if they had learned skiing with the old skiis. Maybe they would have never been champions but maybe they would have been even better than Klammer. We'll never know. It's fair to say that the most succesful downhiller are: -1970-1985: Klammer -1985-1995: Müller and Zurbriggen -1995-2010: Walchhofer, Eberharter and Cuche -2010- nowdays: Feuz and Svindal
@HansMayer-p1s the problem is everything has advanced. So skier of the past would perform better with better equipment and training. It's the same in golf. Today's players hit the ball further but the ball is made to fly further the club's are made to hit the ball further. So yes I do think players of the past and skiers would perform better in today's world than thay did in there time. I just don't know if the same applies in reverse. It doesn't in golf players today have tried to play with old balls /clubs and said they don't know how golfers back then managed. I think it may be the same with skiers.. My opinion only..
@@r1oo1 It doesn't make much sense. Skiers of the early twentieth century were able to ski with worse equipment than Stenmark and they were not professionals but this does not mean that Stenmark cannot be considered as good as or even better than them... Maybe they would have performed better in a "general sense" but not with respect to their opponents
