When the book of longevity on contemporary jazz has been written, this group will be at the of the list. For over 35 consecutive years, Spyro Gyra had passed through the test of time, giving us their unique fusion and infectious groove.
Without a doubt Spyro Gyra is the most successful jazz band on today's contemporary world of music.
Back in in year 1999, I had the privilege to see them live, just right at the front line seats of the legendary BET Studio 2, here in Washington, DC.
This video you will see the Band playing a Latin Jazz Fusion tune titled, "South American Sojourn".

Drummer is the extraordinary Joel Rosenblatt.
Spyro Gyra with their complex stop time signatures can't gamble with a drummer and Joel drummed for them for 14 years.
The current drummer is
Lionel Cordew who is entering his sixth year as Spyro's full-time drummer. The previous drummer
Bonnie Bonaparte from Trinidad+was excellent as but retired to Hawaii as a young man because of
a health problem made the heavy travel needed to keep up Spyro Gyra's touring schedule impossible.
EDIT: Lionel Cordew has now been in the Spyro Gyra drum chair for nearly 10 years as of 2024 and is brilliant in his own right.
