Berber peoples, also called by their contemporary self-name Amazigh or Imazighen, are a diverse grouping of distinct ethnic groups indigenous to North Africa who predate the arrival of Arabs in the Arab migrations to the countries ( Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mali, Niger, and Mauritania ) in North Africa. They speak various Amazigh languages belonging to the Afro-Asiatic family related to ancient Egyptian, such as Kabyles, Chaouis and Rifians. The region in northwestern Africa is believed to have been inhabited by Berbers from at least 10,000 BC
