its weird to me that detroit has this advanced metro tech that is being used as a tourist "monorail", its such overkill for a single way circle system. It needs to be expanded into a real metro. Alstom makes modern trains for this tech, they need to offshoot the downtown core and make a real metro. Vancouver, Kuala lumpur and Osaka all use the same tech, there are so many people and companies who could be brought on to expand the lines.
This 💯 The People Mover needs to be expanded into a citywide metro, maybe going to Ferndale as an exception outside the city. The QLine should be kept compact in areas closer to Downtown.
Vancouver operates the EXACT same system as Detroit. They were both inaugurated in the 1980s. Vancouver's rapid transit network has continuously expanded since opening and is now US/Canada's 4th busiest train network, surpassing the legacy systems of Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia. It's insane Detroit has such advanced rapid transit technology only to not use it to its full potential
Extend the Q-line, mainly following the old streetcars lines, though not as far, or with as many tributaries as in the old days (small and ever dwindling population simply doesn't warrant it). Q-line down Woodward to eight mile VERY NECESSARY, for many reasons. Q-line down Michigan Ave. to train station. E. Jefferson Ave. to say the Jeffersonian Apartment area. MUCH needed. These two would only be if Detroit doesn't continue to lose population... (Q-line possibly just past Eastern Market on Gratiot) (Q-line possibly down a short stretch of Grand River to Woodbridge area?) Regarding the People Mover, it's an impractical one-way ride to nowhere. That thing was a novelty from its very beginning. Remove it altogether. Now, it might be realistic to revive some of the actual streetcar routes which once ran in and through the core downtown. Encouraging a realistic streetcar transit system (not the People Mover), at least in some parts of Detroit, would discourage old building demolition => parking lots, and would encourage the much needed new blood to this city. High crime + no mass transit = necessity of cars...which are vandalized = HIGH AUTO INSURANCE RATES. Nobody, from anywhere else, wants to deal with that mess.
This is HUGE. This could take the people mover from essentially an amusement park ride and make it a functional first step for rapid mass transit in Detroit. I recommend starting at Michigan Central in Corktown and extending it to the apartment towers east of Belle isle. A solid 5 miles of double-tracked, elevated line to set this thing in motion.
extended detailed thoughts.... I, when I worked downtown, always used PM... BUT.... Upgrades, not CHANGES. Too late, it should have already been two-directional, double decker tracks w/ Trains going both directions - TOO LATE. HOWEVER, there MUST be a run from some part, double-wide/decker Trains go both directions to/from DTW. THEN ALSO create another separate and distinct different NORTHERN LOOP (only "attached" in the sense that at least 2 Stations should be side-by-side or just-across-street, for easy transit/transfer betw. the 2 loops (and to 3rd DTW loop). Put new loop/track along side Northern most parts of existing loop to go toward Ford Field, loop behind both Ford Field then along I75-ish next to Comerica, then across Woodward up and around LCA, they back downtown via Cass to complete the Northern loop/Stations back with Stations to interchange between the 2 loops. That would solve A LOT OF THE ISSUES! Sadly, too late, too expensive, too much of a pain, to go putting on a 2nd teir of existing loop to make it two-directional - so keep concept, add new routes (except to/from DTW, that MUST be 2-directional, side-by-side or double-deckered to allow flow both ways or the or the trip too long around - or, really, it still be a loop, but most of the track be side-by-side to at least MOST of the Stations and peeps can then jump to the other direction Trains if need be). Let's FULLY THINK IT THRU this time before digging in the ground. And the part I heard elsewhere about shutting down PM for 2+ months REALLY BAD IDEA (but, I get it, gotta shutdown on occasion since it is one-directional there isn't another direction to shutdown just one-direction while other maintained but still going (full round loop) while the other direction being maintained. Again TOO LATE NOW they didn't think thru but shutdown CANNOT be 2+ months time. And even LONGER TERM, need be a CORKTOWN loop and a up to Belle Isle loop!!!
I feel the people mover should be more focused on the Metro Area. While the Q Line should focus more on being a Link from the Metro Area to the suburbs
Hoo Hum. Thank you Detroit auto industry for no subway or rail lines here. AND we DO have to THANK YOU General Motors for our DOT buses back in the 1950's!!

vancouver uses the same metro tech at detroit. yet has 100k more daily ridership then the Chicago L. Kuala Lumpur also uses the same tech. Yes it is a tourist attraction now. But it could be easily expanded into something more interesting.
The tech behind the People Mover is actually every high tech. A linear motor light metro which if designed correctly could be a great benefit for Detroit’s comeback story. I would suggest they build a separate system using the same tech keeping the loop line as is and building a separate system that connects to the loop.
i love that people think theyre safe being in an area where they could literally walk for 10 minutes and suddenly be in gang land and as if criminals didnt have cars or go to where hipster tourists go. but i agree, if you only get mugged say once a year thats pretty safe for detroit standards.@@lestersloan2758

love the PM! its the future of public transit in detroit even in spite of all the AV tech happening in corktown

Have the People Movers actually have stations connected to the stadium buildings
Yes, when Joe Louis Arena was around

😂 and who is going to pay for this?
The People Mover is a tourist attraction.
It'll never be on par with ChiTowns L-Train.
Thank God for that.....
