  • Happy 4th of July!
In this episode we visit the quiet Buck Hollow Cemetery in the out of the way town of Willamina, Oregon. Turns out you can fall into a creek and have a whole town named after you!
This visit can be classified as quality over quantity. In fact, we only hear 3 individual stories this trip but amazing history tied to them.
Our main story revolves around the Fendall family, who have quite the dentistry accomplishments. Edward Fendall is particuly famous for his curer of scurvy title during the 1700s. However, this led us to hear the famous story of the first clinical trial carried out by Scottish physician James Lind. He accidently cured scurvy but his experiment was ignored.
Our final visit includes a shotgun wielding fur trapper who arrived into Oregon in 1840. Sadly there is no marker for John Patrick Dowd, who was a bit of a badass. History shows him coming up here and there. He was also present at the 1842 Champoeg meeting. Feeling old? Fear not, John tried to enlist at the age of 105 years old during World War 1. The army recruiter replied "you're too young to join John".
Overall an out of the way visit if you're headed out to the coast and just happen to be in the area. A place that will make you feel like you are detached from the world and back in 1850.

    Thank you so much.
You should try to make it to Grants Pass , there is a wonderful Odd Fellows cemetery there.

Thanks very much, quiet cemetery overall and nice drive. Pretty country. I would like to make it further south one of these days, some good visits in southern Oregon.
