    Al, part of the problem with the doors is that they are only finished on one side. This will cause the doors to bow.

    To repeat what others have said - you need to finish/seal BOTH sides. And I believe you could rescue the other doors by adding metal bracing horizontally across the inside to pull the bow back out of them.

      @@margaretbedwell3211 I think that's exactly the issue. Doing both sides may have lessened the distortion of the wood. My old 2-slice toaster had a broken middle element so I'm familiar with the result of burning one side with the opposite left raw.

    • @jacksak
      @jacksak 4 місяці тому +5

      @@margaretbedwell3211 I am guessing that if you change the breath-ability or density of only one side, then the item will warp. I retired from painting but whenever I had a new bare wooden door I made sure I primed both sides without waiting for one side to dry. Otherwise the door might warp.

    Al a type of Cow to consider; Belted Galloways ( the "Oreo" Cow ) were imported to North America beginning in the 1940s, and the Belted Galloway Society in the United States was founded in 1951.
    Beneath the flashy appearance is a very useful animal. The Belted Galloway is well adapted to cold, rugged climates; as part of this adaptation, the cattle grow a shaggy hair coat (a “double coat”) in the winter. In the summer, Belted Galloways shed this coat and tolerate warm climates better than most other cold-adapted cattle. Galloways are medium in size, with cows weighing about 1,000 lbs. and bulls about 1,600 lbs. Cows show strong maternal instinct, including the ability to protect calves against predators. They are polled.
    Belted Galloway beef, like that from Galloways and other Scottish breeds, is of high quality and can be marketed in a variety of specialty niches, including grass-fed and organic beef. The long body conformation increases the production of high-priced cuts of beef. Hides may be used to make rugs, and the belting pattern combined with the shaggy hair makes these products distinctive and attractive.
    In Europe, the breed is considered a “light grazer,” meaning that its relatively light bodyweight makes it preferred for grazing where heavier animals would damage marginal lands. Belted Galloways are also known for their browsing ability and ability to graze coarse grasses that other breeds avoid, giving them added value in the management and diversification of grasslands.
    Their hardiness and gentle temperament as well as their attractive coloring make them a favorite choice for beginning farmers.

      @LumnahAcres Hi Al, the type of lumber makes the difference too. I used 2 X 6 Douglas Fir for its stability. Hemlock Fir and Spruce Fir are less stable in the door construction. Maybe after doing your finish you could do a Thompson Water Seal to close the Pores of the wood. I hate ty o see you have to replace thise large doors also. Good Luck, follow you and Gina for years now. Take care, Frank B.

    An option for your doors night be to cover them in sheet metal. But paint them white to keep them from absorbing too much heat. That heat transfers into the space with the animals. Pigs can't take too much heat. That's why they need a wallow to cool them down.

    You should put the salt block under cover. Leaving it out, the livestock will kick dirt in the pan, and when it rains, you'll have a muddy, salty mess in the pan. It will clog up the holes, start souring, and the salt block will be sitting in a muddy puddle.

    I think another reason your 2x6 doors warped so much is that you bought them from the big box store. Those pine boards were likely not nearly as dry as 3/4" wood you bought from a lumber yard. Being more wet, the sun dried it more, which led to more wood movement.

    14:15 The reason wood splits is because you didn't give it room for expansion. Especially, where you have cross grain applications like this. Wood moves. It's bowing because you didn't give it anywhere else to go. If you have to do this again use slots and screws to allow for expansion. 💖🌞🌵😷

    Hey Al...just a tip for the salt block. You'd do well to keep the salt block dry (out of the rain), and don't put it into a bowl that will collect moisture.

    I have always used a stakeout method to train and settle my bulls to halter and lead. This would also allow them to graze in different area each day while being back in the lot at night.

    Al, best way to keep your doors square and true use angle iron applied all around the four sides. May not need 4 just how well they straten out the gap.

    An issue you may face with making your doors like this is wood movement. You're putting solid stock, glued and with mechanical fasteners onto a plywood substrate. The plywood will not expand and contract with temperature and moisture like the sold stock will...which means at some point, there is risk of the solid stock cracking, etc. Then the bracing in the cross grain direction moves in the opposite direction as the solid stock faces. This is a challenge of building doors and is not criticism...it's a heads up that you may still have issues.
    On the track saw question....they are absolutely useful and valuable. Yes, one can make an edge guide to run a regular circular saw along, but but since the saw is not captured by the guide there will still be variation in the quality of the cut due to the human hand as you move through the operation. A tracksaw keeps things more accurate. Almost all the major brands have tracksaw setups so if you opt for battery operated, go with the brand your other battery operated power tools use. If corded, it doesn't matter as much.

    think about adding a strongback board at the top, middle, bottom to prevent warping. could use 2x4 with 45 deg angles on end so it doesn't catch opening. I've even see a few use 1 1/2 angle iron bolted on the same way.

    Use the 6x2 as your frame ,use the steel attach to frames and they will last for many years . When the ply wood gets wet the door will bend again

    Do you suppose that if you had sealed those doors (both sides) with Thompsons or some other sealer after burning them it would have prevented the warping? Just a thought…….

      Also when he cuts the doors where they split using a 45degree angle so the water can’t run in so easily would help. I live in Amish county and that’s what they do so the water doesn’t just run in and down inside the door as much as a straight cut.

    Al, bolt 2" x 2"x 1/4" angle iron at top and bottom of each door. Bevel or round the angle iron ends. If you want you can drill a hole in the in the bottom angle iron of the top door and the top angle iron of the bottom door, and pin them together just to make both latches work to keep both doors shut. Good luck!

  • @william6526

    I believe they are absorbing moisture and the wood is swelling up and with no gap between the boards they have to bend. Maybe if you had sealed the doors on both sides and left an expansion gap they may not warp.

  • @jimrisch8408
    @jimrisch8408 4 місяці тому

    Al, you could do like you did for you large barn doors and build an angle-iron frame for the doors to attach the wood to. That would eliminate any warping.

    Yes on the Track saw, Al. I originally used it just to break down sheet goods, but as time progresses I have used it for so many projects I could not imagine not having one. Way safer than using a table saw a lot of times , and way more accurate and simpler than using a straight edge.

  • @jazzy1871

    The screws on the back of the door on each of the 2x6s are holding inside edges together causing imbalance stress and the concave to the inside. You could flatten the doors on the floor by adding weight on top to flatten the bow then add metal straps on the outside face to offset the bowing stress ( If your new doors don't work out either but hopefully they do :).)

    I haven't seen boarddoors warp like that that were dried and sealed. Have you thought about putting a piece of angleiron on the top and bottom and maybe a different door latch? That is heart breaking all the work you did making. Better luck on the new doors.

    Al you can go get some metal u channel at home depot. Drill holes along the u channel 2 in on center and install it on the backside of the door. I would start by installing two on each section and see how it goes.This tecnique is used to keep table tops flat too.

    You have to watch the moisture count in the wood and use a good sealer to keep moisture out.🤔. Those that you made should be much better. But cured dry wood may work also.

    Did you use kiln dried wood for your frames?? even though you did the burn finish you should put a sealer on the wood ! I try to keep good cabinet grade or premium grade lumber inside for a while before using it, that way it has a chance to dry out and stabilize. Todays wood goes from tree to lumber so fast it doesnt have time to cure out! You did great with the doors just mother nature threw you some curved wood! keep up the Great videos

    We had to use some steel on our doors. Layed them down to get the bow out then put steel strips on the top middle and bottom on both sides.
