L.A.B. DF3 VS. PXG ALLAN // Best torque-free putter available?

  • Zero-torque putters like the L.A.B DF3 and PXG Allan are creating buzz and cult followings among pros and recreational golfers alike. But what makes Zero-Torque putters special, and just how similar do these two putters work?
Today, Mikey is in the studio to test if PXG Allan is truly torque free like the L.A.B. DF3. Could you simply choose between the DF3 and the Allan or is there more to match up with stroke than is advertised?

Have a chuckle perspective: As a 72 year old, 16 handicap golfer my primary criteria in a putter is that the back architecture allows to easily scoop up the ball off the green thus eliminating the necessity to bend over to pick it up.

People that wonder why putters with low to no torque putters are so beneficial should watch this video. Everyone understands what “expanding” the sweet spot in a driver does for shot consistency, reducing torque in a putter is basically the same.

Ian, your point about gripping the putter changes the zero torque characteristic is spot on. The ? is whether the zero torque style nonetheless more comfortably promotes a square face at impact better than other styles. What I got out of this video is that a putter fitting adds more value than I thought due to the increased amount of data available.

All I know is I have like 8 putters and I practice with all of them. I rank them on my shelf left to right, most to least favorite, and my two LABs (mezz max and link) occupy spots 1a and 1b. Nothing is more stable and repeatable in terms of hitting my start line. I did just order an odyssey square to square jailbird for fun, but I can't imagine it dethrones the labs.

I'd really like to see a comparison between these and a more traditional putter with a less skilled, higher handicap, player. That would better showcase the low/zero torque technology and more accurately compare them for us mere mortals to see if it is actually beneficial or just a feel thing. Thanks for the great video as this was the exact comparison I've been looking for.

Ditto what @aarondrossart6026 said. I'm a 16 index and have just switched from Odyssey Whitehot OG #7 to a DF3. I love the feel of the Odyssey and have used it for the past 3 seasons. I struggle with both hitting my start line and pace. The DF3 has greatly improved my start line so I can focus more on pace. My putting is much better. It's not a cure all but I'm 2 putting much more instead of 2 putting and my second putts are much closer than before. I notice on my indoor putting mat that using the DF3 is helping me putt better with the Odyssey. I think the DF3 is just much easier to square. So much so that I don't have to spend any effort getting it square.

I'm a good putter. But the USGA has banned my approach to putting. Specifically, using a stand-up putter to look at the line behind the putter. (You can use the stand-up putter, but you can't use it the way it was designed to be used.) That caused me to go looking for a replacement. I settled on the Allan. It is, by far, the most accurate putter I've ever hit. I loved the Happy Putter for its incredible flexibility (lie, loft, weighting, etc.). And I truly loved the Craz-E, still the best rolling putter ever.
I've been using center-shafted putters for three decades, so I knew I needed a similar replacement. While the Allan isn't exactly that, it sets up that way, looks that way, and performs that way. Because I have a (mostly) square-to-square front-to-back stroke (hence, the center shaft), the Allan has fit the bill nicely. I'm putting better than ever, even though I've lost the ability to read the line from behind. Highly recommended.

i don't know why we keep calling the Allan a "zero torque" putter. it's not. it literally tries to return to a specific position; same as a "face-balanced" putter. They've simply changed the balance point. the LAB is a true "zero torque" putter in that it doesn't try to return to a specific position during the swing; it's agnostic to position relative to the stroke. For context, the same argument exists against the Evnroll zero.

Can't answer the question "Best torque-free putter available?"without including Axis1 putters.
Axis1 has the U.S. utility patent placing the center of gravity in line with the axis of shaft, grip, and in the center of the striking face, providing immediate feedback from the strike and allowing the lightest grip pressure for the most sensitive feel for distance control in addition to zero torque.
A putter is a tool, and Axis1 putters are perfectly balanced tools.

    I’m missing something here…
if LAB putters whole concept is zero torque then it demands a very neutral putting arc in order to manage the face and path to the cup… the whole point of having a toe or face or whatever weighted is that it literally is designed to square at impact (given all other variables) based on a specific putting arc.
So being fit for LAB is you putting for the putter rather than being fitted for a putter based on your arc.
I truly don’t buy into this LAB marketing, giving putters to all the UA-cam players and tour pros and their stupid contraption they swing putters about in, if I was other putter brands I’d be responding by saying “yes? You’re proving our weighting is doing what it’s supposed to”

I think you’re missing the point and calling it marketing. Listen to Ian at 17:17 - the lab is more stable in regard to face rotation. The LAB is weighted so perfectly it doesn’t try to twist in your hand the way every other putter does. Regardless of anyone’s stroke, that’s always better. More companies will go to this once LAB’s patents run out.

@@wiscobuckeye Face rotation is relative to putting arc, and my point is - you should be FIT for a putter that suits your stroke. I don’t have a straight back straight forward arc, in fact, most people don’t. As a putting aid to increase that to your stroke (should you want to) it makes a lot of sense to have a putter that doesn’t try to close or open the face (I think it’s questionable how much iT REALLY helps on a course and not on a scientific putting bay) but that’s another story.
Personally I am not looking to manipulate my stroke to fit a putter, I’d rather find a putter than suits my stroke, LAB with all their marketing are just showing you a different weighted putter than suits a specific section of the market well, I don’t buy that it fixes majority of avg putters strokes

@ you’re literally making the case for LAB putters without realizing it. I’m not trying to troll here - genuinely trying to help you understand the science. You are exactly correct: face rotation is relative to a players putting arc and everyone has a different putting arc. Which is why every LAB putters has to be custom fit to get the benefits from the science. Every other putter on the market wants to either open or close relative to your arc, and you have to manipulate it so that it doesn’t open or close more than it should in order to square it up at impact. But a properly fitted LAB putter will stay perfectly square to your arc (opening and closing the perfect amount) for the entire length of the stroke, and you won’t have to do anything to square it at impact. LAB putters are definitely NOT for people with a straight back and straight through putting stroke. In fact, the company themselves tells everyone there should be some amount of arc to a stroke: you just want the face to stay square to the arc. At the end of the day, I couldn’t care any less what you buy, it just bugged me when it became so obvious you are misunderstanding the science.

Most golfers need time to work with a L.A.B. putter, it requires a different stroke than normal putters AND you MUST be fit for the correct lie as in Lie Angle Balanced (NOT zero torque).
If you are used to manipulating the putter head as you would with a normal putter, it'll likely not be your best bet.

PXG, Odyssey and other manufacturers are just jumping on the marketing band wagon with no torque concept created by LAB. LAB at the moment is the only manufacturer that truly produces a torque free putter. FACT!

Guys what do you say when a customer brings up, I’m sure is a very common complaint, the horrible aesthetics. At what point does the benefit of performance cease to outweigh the off-putting effect of the look of the putter?

Not sure how accurate this is, but pgaclubtracker has LAB as the 5th most played on tour at 9. Mezz max and df3 are tied for first in most played model along with Ping PLD proto… so definitely not snake oil
