  • Ancient beech forests are Europe's wilderness. Their designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is like a Nobel Prize for a protected area. In 2017, the Ancient Beech Forests and Primeval Beech Forests of Kalkalpen National Park and Dürrenstein-Lassingtal Wilderness Area were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The two protected areas are at the heart of a Europe-wide World Heritage with 51 beech forest protected areas in 18 European countries: from Ukraine to Spain, from southern Sweden to Italy. The European beech connects Europe with its different languages and diverse forest habitats from the seashore to high mountains.
