Hey, new subscriber here! Just so you know the title and description is in Spanish, but there’s no Spanish subtitles. Maybe it’s just an error for me ✌🏻
@@TheNewTravel amazing. I found you from the Sony zv1 review… and then subscribed for the good filmmaking! I’m a new youtuber so thanks for the inspiration
You might want to know that a famous French Canadian author from Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, Gabrielle Roy, published in 1945, an award winning novel (Governor general, Fémina, etc.) about the working class people of Saint-Henri. The title of the novel is Bonheur d’occasion. It has been translated in English (The Tin Flute). There is a museum in Saint-Boniface dedicated to Gabrielle Roy. Your Mom and you should look that up one day. (Talk about making a full cercle! 😉)
Jean-Francois was refreshingly balanced when it came to assessing those condos. They are indeed for the newly wed and the nearly dead, the land value has gone up because it's so close to downtown and the bad reputation the area once had has given way to the reality that it's a great location right next to a canal. The canal used to be a negative, it was a heavily polluted industrial strip in the 90s, but is now an awesome green corridor (just don't go swimming). All is not lost though, among the towers there are quite a few few co-ops and other forms of low income housing, all those towers have also added thousands of units which have helped alleviate the housing supply issue in other parts of Montreal.
This is the crossover I need: Paige Saunders and Dan from The New Travel. Both of you guys have such interesting perspectives about this city (or province), and that sort of open mindedness (not sure I got the spelling on that right) is really refreshing.
Indeed.. sadly price booms wont go away until the supply goes up.. shame they keep making teeny tiny poorly build units that are worth squillions... both of you should do a video collab btw mate
This part of town was a true working class neighbourhood and families were squeezed into the smaller homes. In the 70s I helped a friend when his mobile disco biz had contracts in the area and it looked quite run down back then. But to those who grew up there it was home and home is always where the heart is (or so the saying goes). It's diffucult to imagine that it's costly to live there now.
I visit my cousin every couple of months in Montreal (transplant from Edmonton - married someone from Quebec!) and I love the city! Big time! Fabulous videos Dan! Always! Great meet up! A million dollar apartment sounds like Vancouver where I am. Insane! Cheers!
My esteem in JF instantly went up as soon as he said he likes Satay brothers - one of my favorites in St henri. Tacos Frida is probably my favorite tacos spot in the city too if you're ever back in that hood.
I grew up in Si- Henri 1970 it was a poor area and very french speaking 20 years that i grew up there was rarely saw any immigrants, now it is such a new place i would not recognize it.
You are famous! Like your videos. I enjoy seeing you cover the different neighborhoods in Montreal. My fave cities to visit in Canada are Montreal and Vancouver. But especially for Montreal, winter is the time to go to Mexico!!!
I ve been living in the hood for more than 30 years. Once upon a time there were more families but families often move to suburbia when then can afford a single family house. St henri goes through ups and downs. It gets gentrified because many places where not kept up. It is wonderful to see old architecture being invested in and preserved for posterity. It is more diversified than many areas of montreal, English, French and everything in between. There are poor, rich, old and young. Beautiful parks, restaurants ,old and new and new boutiques. Montréal is attracting many foreign students because of the many universities in both French and English. Graffiti is something new. It started about 15 years ago and let s hope it is the end of it!
I just moved back to MTL after living abroad for 4 years and you're videos are making me realise I'm SO happy to be back. I've missed Montreal too much 🙃
Did you know the full name of Saint-Henri is Saint-Henri-de-Westmount . St.Henry(of Westmount) However Saint-Henri was poorer than Westmount like you said was down the hill while Westmount stood over the neighborhood. Also The French Novel Bonheur d'Occasion wrote by Franco-Manitoban author Gabrielle Roy was going in Saint-Henri-de-Westmount during Wolrd War 2.
You should do Little Burgundy. Rito Joseph would be a great reference for better awareness of the area's Black history. Otherwise, lots of interesting diverse neighborhoods to check out. Including Côte des Neiges, Saint-Michel, Petite-Patrie or Parc Extension.
a You walked right by the Fattal Loft when you were near the train tracks it's where all the punks of montreal Live. It's an interesting area. Thereuse to be a music festival there in the summer too.
Merci for this tour . St Henri , My very first metro stop in Montreal ….. commuting from Ville St Laurent on my way to downtown 1982. It has not changed much in the past four decades. Must definitely visit Satay brothers and green spot .
I remember Saint Henri being a poor and rather rundown and depressing neighborhood circa 2001. The gentrification phenomenon is recent. A friend of mine comes from there. His mother's house is modest... And it is now surrounded by luxury condo towers.
Actually "gentrification" is not that new. I moved in the late 80 s and many commercial places had been turned into artist s loft. Anti gentrification movement came around the early 2000, before that , making your ace pretty was never a problem.
I used watch your videos back when I was in India and I was always amazed and wanted to experience the city so bad, now that I am in Montreal for past year I just look over everything because am too busy 🤣
Great video Dan, as usual. After visiting Montreal I can't get the city off my mind, I hope to live there some day. I need to convince my fiance that Montreal is a great place to raise a family. She is interested in single family detached homes. I would love it if you could make a video about some of the more family oriented neighborhoods and maybe talk to someone who is raising a family in Montreal so we can understand the real experience.
Many neighbourhoods in Montreal are family-oriented. My friends with families live in Rosemont (it’s a huge neighbourhood), Villeray, Ahuntsic or Verdun. Only downtown and Griffintown are not well-suited for families.
Montreal is the best place in Canada to raise kids. The day care is really cheap. We just paid $7 per day, and college tuition was only $70 per semester. The University tuition is the cheapest in North America. Also, extra curricular activities, like sports and arts programmes for kids are often free, unless you choose to send your kids to a private school. I only wish the housing on the Island was more affordable, but it's better than Toronto.
You better think twice or three times about moving to Montreal. So many anglophones are leaving, young and old. Over half a million have left in the last 40 years because of language laws. As are new immigrants to Canada that have arrived in Quebec first. This is all due to the strict French language laws...look up Bill 101...and now Quebec is passing a even harsher French language bill 96 I think it is. My friends have told me all about this.
@@Nature_with_Peter_Kane thanks for the caution, it's definitely a real consideration and a huge change. I'll dig a bit deeper into the laws and see if I find it concerning. Thanks again!
@@Mchris24 I live in the middle of rural Utah and housing is more expensive here than Montreal 😅 cost of living seems to be a huge plus in Montreal even considering higher taxes.
@@TheNewTravel Hey Dan how are you doing hey I got a question am a black American male from the south. I been to Montreal one back in 2017 but I didn't get a chance to really see the city I just went to this casino on a island but I want to ask you are there a lot of black people in Montreal. And have you ever been to parc ex I seen a story about Jackie Robinson he lived in parc ex Montreal for a while him and his wife I think they have a moment for him in parc ex have you ever seen it. Well alright take care my friend
@TheNewTravel Dan, you should invite your girlfriend and check out the old city part of Quebec City, if you get a chance before going to Guatemala. To me, it feels pretty unique in North America. Also, there's a waterfall just outside of town we didn't get a chance to visit while we were there a few years ago. I wouldn't mind seeing a video of those.
Waaaaay back when, St. Henri and Verdun were like slum areas. If you lived there, there was something wrong with you. It's nice how areas can change -- hopefully for the better.
Yeah this area isn't getting gentrified fast enough, it's kind of better than 10 years ago, but still, St-Henri can be a dangerous shithole at night. A good part of that neighbourhood has barred windows, that tells you a lot about an area. You clearly only visited the nicest streets and during the day.
I can bet money that those million dollar condos are nothing but a one or two-bedroom apartment with one bathroom and that's it. You're packed into a sardine can and have to pay a million dollars for it.
