- A massive convoy of Foxhounds, Jackals and Land Rovers has surprised villagers in the East Midlands.
The troops from 2nd Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment were practising their immediate response to a Nato Very High Readiness Joint Task Force call-out.
The 500 soldiers and their 162 vehicles are preparing to take part in Exercise Steadfast Defender, Nato's largest exercise since the Cold War.

I had the privilege to take part in a NATO exercise in 1984 called Lionheart. 130,000 UK soldiers took part it was a sight that has never left me. The amount of tanks, armoured vehicles and artillery was breathtaking.
Half that force now.
And now: 16,000.. all of us needs to step up. And fast.

Everyones force is tiny compared to the 80's kinda stating the obvious. But in the 80's we also still had WW2 fresh on our mind, things have changed since then and so has technology.
Thankfully, we don't need as many troops anymore. It's all about drones and technology. The Ukraine war is the first real peak at what modern war between 2 large conventional armies look like.

Debends how you defind defence forces FDF warrtime strenght is 280k (Age between 18 to 35). And second cycle reserve is 500k (age between 35 to 60) and larger artillery than French, England and Germany compined). Also have more leopardi than Germany. And is still called defence forces.

90,000 troops figure is 3000 troops less than the number of POWs we Indians got the last time we went to war, a war lasting just 13 days. And that was back when we were a much weaker country.
The biggest exercise we conducted, we had 800,000 troops deployed. Biggest exercise since the 2nd world war, bigger than any NATO exercise till then. Gave our enemy such a fright that they were shivering even after deploying their entire military in anticipation.
I remember how when tensions with China escalated in 2020, Indian Air Force airlifted 68,000 troops and hundreds of ICVs and tanks to the front within days to add to the forces already deployed there. And that was on just one sector of the China front.
Exercises involving around 35,000 troops happen in India every year. And smaller exercises involving around 3000 troops happen almost constantly in some frontier areas of India.
All this while we have upwards of 150,000 troops constantly deployed in fighting insurgencies and around 40,000 troops are constantly deployed on an active ceasefire line that sees daily ceasefire violations, sniping, raids and ambushes and (less frequently) artillery shelling. And thousands of troops deployed to UN missions. And hundreds deployed to tackle Red Sea crisis.
I get that UK doesn't have need for a large Army like we do, but NATO fielding just 90,000 in their "biggest exercise since Cold War is disappointing. No wonder Trump is threatening Europe so harshly. USA realizes the coming shift in world's balance of power, whereas Europeans are chilling in their wokeness.

I remember the Strategic Defence Review 2010 that said State to State conflicts were a thing of the past and all the UK needed was a small peacekeeping and rapid reaction anti-terrorism force....

My old man was a Troop Sgt in the Royal Scots Grey's, 1945 till 1958. The British Army did a show of force parade in Hamburg in 1946, a Victory parade. I have seen the pictures, Centurion tanks lined up on the road as far as you can see. Different world we live in now, more volatile, more mobile, and yet Westminster clowns continue to cutting military numbers & budgets. Shame on them messing with national security.

US Secretary of State James Baker famously said: "we will not move NATO one inch to the East". Five years later NATO was in all 14 countries on the Russian border. That's what caused the war, and of course the US and UK governments talking Zelensky out of signing the Minsk peace deal.

It’s not all about numbers. Technology, training and professionalism are so important. But I agree we need to up the numbers to be able to effectively fill all our deployments. The UK though can punch over its weight and is no pushover. Together with our allies we will make them think twice ✌️

Every decision you make is gonna make is gonna directly impact future. Not just present now but very future. And for the worse. We are also enabling and inviting/teaching others that fighting back and worsening our own country is way to go. We should be teaching wisdom instead. The vehicles that are open top (don't look like your normal military up armoured car or truck) are called Jackals. They are for reconnaissance not for attacking a position.

This is a wonderful sight...The timing couldn't be bettered and sending a very clear message to Russia and all other potential adversaries what NATO is really all about and the UK's role in it.

None of those armored vehicles appear to have anti drone protection like the overhead cages you see in the Ukrainian theatre of combat. So I;d like to ask if anyone knows if the Brit Army has reviewed its doctrines tactics etc in light of the experiences gained by observing the fighting in the Ukraine ? Or is it planning to do so sometime in the future
The overhead cages were made for ATGMs and Javelins,drones drop one grenade blow the cage and the next one comes and blows the tank,pretty useless to be honest.
We don't need cages way to much accuracy to waste money on umbrellas

I wonder when Western Powers will realize that they have done enough throughout the world for the last millenium.
