The Free State Province is faced with a number of challenges. Key to these challenges is the high unemployment rate, poverty, low economic growth, as well as lack of service delivery. The province has seen a number of protests by unhappy and frustrated communities, some protests turned violent. Some of its municipalities are under administration, because of corruption and maladministration. Not one municipality in the Free State has received a clean audit opinion in the past six years.
