  • On Saturday 16 February 2013, BBC Parliament devoted its Saturday evening to a series of programmes about Harold Wilson - on the 50th anniversary of Wilson's election as Leader of the Labour Party. www.bbc.co.uk/p...
This part contains half of Wilson's brief career as a chat show host. In October 1979 Wilson was invited to host two editions of 'Friday Night, Saturday Morning'. Transmitted on 12 and 19 October, Wilson's sympathetic biographer Ben Pimlott notes "he was not judged a success". This is the second of the programmes. Wilson's guests are Robin Day, Winston Churchill (grandson of the former PM), Mike Yarwood, and Mary Wilson.

As an American, I found this rather charming! Harold Wilson is one the former PM's that I have an interest in and this was a nice departure for him to try something new and different outside of the realm of politics. If the other episode is ever uploaded, I'd love to watch that as well.

Hi Scott, what do you make of our former Prime Ministers?

Harold Wilson reminds me of Barack Obama. He doesn't says all the right things and is a very smooth political operator. But at the end of the day the policies he campaigned on are not implemented, promise of a new progressive policy direction in reality equates to more of the same and ultimately no difference compared to his immediate peers from the opposition party that's true of Wilson and Obama. Harold MacMillan Anthony Eden and Ted Heath all governed about the same as Wilson. Both the Bushes and Clinton govern the same as Obama. Wilson and Obama came into office promising a much different direction yet there was no discernible difference in the way they govern. Wilson comes off as enjoying the day today my new show of politics. He reminds me of a sleazy car salesman someone who is very difficult to pin down... yet when the pressure is on him and he has to deliver he consistently fail or just never brought a solution to the table. As much as I personally dislike Ted Heath and would much rather have a meal with Wilson compared to heat there's something about Ted that comes off as very authentic and passionate. His work with the European Union/mRk3t is a good example.
I'm also an American and in my opinion one of your prime minister's was the most consequential politician in the second half of the 20th century. Margaret Thatcher. Americans don't realize how captured the economy of Great Britain was from the 50s to the 1970s... and also I know he has a poor reputation over there but I really have a soft spot for Tony Blair. I think his policies and kind of progressive / pre-market

That's how you set the mood for an evening of spirited and intellectual conversation: a couple having sex, then slowly panning to Harold Wilson. In this lousy era of political rhetoric and cheap TV, the best you can hope for is someone getting a handy under the table, then panning to Michael Howard.

@@brianwarden7250 Yeah, but at least back in the day politicians spoke in complete sentences and voters didn't hold that against them. (Granted, I'm writing that from the US, where political rhetoric is, like, half a step up from "Show how important you are by whipping it out and waving it at the audience," so I'm a bit jaded.)

    What a great upload.
I thought he did just fine hosting the chat show... just one or two points slipped his mind providing evidence that his memory was fading.
Remember he was not a professional broadcaster and when chatting to Robin Day you can see how more relaxed and smooth Day is on camera.

This Friday Night, Saturday Morning was transmitted during the infamous ITV strike of 1979 which caused ITV to be off the air From Friday 10th August until Wednesday 24th October 1979. So, this programme would have gained huge ratings, as there was only BBC One and BBC Two available.

Mike Yarwood was light entertainment royalty at that time and it is gratifying to see his actual modesty in the face of the real thing. Which, it turned out, was a mark of the man.

I miss the likes of Sir Robin Day. There aren't any journalists left like him. A product of a better era: extremely bright, direct, not afraid to ask confrontational questions, yet never rude.

Mike Yarwood, not just a great impressionist, but a great satirist and comedian. When I listen to Robin Day sucking in his breath in the middle of sentences and Yarwood's hilarious mimicry I know where Darth Vader's laboured breathing comes from - Yarwood's and Sir Robin Day's estates should be claiming intellectual property rights from George Lucas for plagiarism

I'd only ever seen snippets of this that we're used to trot out the myth that this was a total car crash. I don't think it was. There were moments where his inexperience as an interviewer, plus the onset of dementia, made it look amateurish. Notwithstanding those moments, I enjoyed watching this and learned more about twentieth century politics from the insight of all the guests.

At my school - not private- we all stood up when a teacher entered the class room. It showed respect. But also when we were protesting against an unfair and arbitrary rule was imposed on us by the headmistress, we showed part of our displeasure by not standing for the teachers. No aggression .

The best one of this series was the episode where Wilson interviewed his ex-cabinet Minister, Tony Benn. There was obviously no love lost between the two men. Wilson was barely civil to Benn, and the interview degenerated into
Benn and Wilson hurling insults at one another. One of the most surreal things I've watched on television.
