i saw this concert and this is a dream came true for regine. i heard her said in a live radio performance that she wants to have a duet with brian mcknight. it was a dream came true for me too. imagine two of the best (if not the best) singers in the world on one stage.... top that!!!
after all these years, regine sings most effortlessly and most powerfully. brian knows that and even said she's on top the list of the most talented singers in the world. regine can overpower the choking/lipsynching mariah anytime when it comes to LIVE singing! it's a proven fact, right guys?
regine is great, she had a stamp on the song for her version. but yeah i also prefer vanessa's version. the song requires something that's more subtle for the female lines. i think it's better heard with a lower pitch voice like vanessa's. regine's voice is too powerful for a song like this. a different song or a change of arrangement/pitch would have made a difference.
We should stop comparing Regine with Mariah because Regine is very talented in her own rights. She doesn't need Mariah's shadow, or she doesn't need to shadow Mariah. More power to you Regine!
I would have to agree, whenever Vanessa sings this song she evokes the right amount of passion and emotion (I think it has to do with her years of vocal and theatre training, she knows the right way and time to emote and hold back.) I'll give my props when it's due, Regina can sing, but in my personal opinion Vanessa's lower register and her belting at the end with Brian made the song.

Brian Mcknight is an absolutely phenomenal singer. Regine was good...but Brian was amazing...there aren't many singer who can make every single note sound incredible but he'd definitely one of them. Whether its a nice safe note within his range or an amazingly high one, i for one get goosebumps.
how about do some browsing her tagalog songs when she was in 18 years old ...just type ryan cayabyab and regine or regine for the record...find also her videoes with different version singing "piece of sky"

The reason Regine sing songs from Mariah..Patti is because they are great singers with great songs that people can relate to. I respect her singing abilities first from listening to covers of these artists, then I listen to her other music and they were even better. It's a business, I am sure those original artists whom she recorded are well rewarded and if her covers are not any good then it wouldn't be good business.
