Andrew, this is out of context. Just viewed another live stream, but Relevant to your sword instruction. You quoted the bible improving skills in partnering.
It is so true. I am condensing--you relayed the concept about honing skills in each other. It was very appropriate and concept useful. Christine. P.s. sword grip instruction comprehensive and was my first lesson. I always wanted to take it for the exercise and artform. I will add it to the list when looking for school.

Great explanation of grips. There are so many more grips that I would love to see you explore.

Just fyi... In European styles a finger over the guard is infact used in some live combat techniques, like you said it does make the finger vulnerable... it is usually placed there during point work. So I think it was likely used that way in duels even in China as well. Definitely , requires awareness to use safely with an opponent.

I have seen that among HEMA practitioners and it has always puzzled me. I have never studied HEMA (I hope to get into it a bit at some point) so I am not sure what the reasoning is for that finger placement in their arts. What I learned in Japanese sword work and Chinese sword work is that the only things that go beyond the hand guard are things you do not mind losing. The exception was for solo performances with a paper thin Jian to add additional control to make up for how light the sword is. I cannot speak for HEMA, but for the arts I have studied I think letting the finger go past the guard adds unnecessary risk that is disproportional to any benefits such a grip could offer. So, everyone is welcome to practice however they want, but I will keep my fingers behind the guard.

@@AndrewPlitt This specific topic was on my mind when searching for this video, so I would like to add something for you to consider in addition to the previous great points you made: If you grip with the finger over the guard, your posture, blade angle and leverage is already changed to the point where you are very unlikely to get hit on the finger. Not at least by anything that wouldn't just as easily hit any of the other fingers.

Thank you so much. I like your presentation with very nice voice; and I have taken the techniques contained in this VDO for my Jian practice improvement.
    - By the way, I think it would be much better if you can adjust the tone of your voice to allow the clear content you are presenting. May be, because my listening comprehension is poor, as English is my second language; I cannot get it clear from your words spoken out. BUT very sincerely said here; I very much appreciate your nice explanation.
    - I have subscribed to your channel. 🙏
