  • BAE Systems has secured a $184 million contract modification from the U.S. Army for an additional 48 Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles (AMPVs), furthering the modernization of the Army's Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCTs). The AMPV family includes five key variants-General Purpose, Medical Evacuation, Medical Treatment, Mission Command, and Mortar Carrier-each offering advanced mobility, survivability, and communication capabilities. Designed to replace the aging M113 vehicles, AMPVs are a critical part of the Army’s Next Generation Combat Vehicle program, ensuring enhanced battlefield performance. With modular designs and future upgrade capabilities, these vehicles are central to the Army’s strategy for improved logistics, maintenance, and digital integration, positioning AMPVs as a cornerstone in modern military operations. BAE Systems has expanded production facilities to meet the rising demand for AMPVs, marking significant progress in the U.S. military’s modernization priorities.

These are for mechanized soldiers. Protects against artillery shrapnel and small arms. It’s not perfect. But it’s better than the old 113s.

122 vehicles per year is nowhere near enough to account for the expected demands a “near peer” conflict will entail.

I am just thinking 120 a year is far to little. The US has thousands needing replacement.

One of the variants pictured here from BAE looked like an anti-air/anti-drone model, but, yeah, it's too easy to take armored vehicles out now.
