- Pride in Britain's history has dropped sharply, with only 64% of people expressing pride in the country's past, down from 86% a decade ago, according to the latest British social attitudes survey.
Pride in the democratic system also fell to 53%, down from 69% in 2013, while just 44% are proud of Britain’s economic achievements, a drop from 57% in 2013.
Peter Cardwell speaks with associate editor of The Spectator, Rod Liddle to discuss the article he had written on the decline in British pride.

NI isn’t t a colony, it’s part of the UK. And the immunity granted to the IRA that killed far more people in NI than the British wasn’t criticized at all, and those culpable for the Birmingham pub bombings have been ignored for instance. A lot of this new interest in colonial history is a mixture of juvenile academia and Russian backed subversion.

It had to be captured in order to become 'part of the UK.' Nationalists have faced intimidation and violence at times right up to the present so it wasn't Unionists there. They and their bigotry meant that NI failed to have a working government again until relatively recently after years of behaving the way fine gael do in the south towards sinn fein. Therefore In my opinion, Germany & definitely the Netherlands are closer to being more moral today. In Ireland, we have had a sharp rise in street violence and communities at odds with our levels of untenable immigration and yet it's illegal for us to have pepper spray. I say to anyone who would doubt that Great Britain, a better name couldn't have been imagined and shouldn't be forgotten, I would say to any of the doubters of the greatness of that small collection of people who makup that small collection countries on that small island in the North Atlantic to look around the planet at the other countries who won the same lottery that Canada won and after seeing how those countries compare to the rest on this earth try and tell me that Britain doesn't deserve the Great in its name.
My God they did a finer job that could have been imagined and when compared to the other countries who were expanding at th3 same moment in time it's embarrassing how fortunate every member of the Commonwealth was when the British came and showed us how to not just live but to thrive as a people.

And yes we have a tendency to be a bit racist and have for centuries. I have seen it and heard it all over the country in odd conversations particularly when talking about some social discontent.
But I have also heard people being dismissive of people from the village down the road. We are like that as humans.

History is written by the winners, so the patriotic stories are all about how 'great' were were. Peel back the lid a bit and it can get very unpleasant. We have committed some really appalling atrocities never mind the slave trade. When you learn about those, the pride is tempered by these obscene realities. We are not all good and we are not all bad. I think 64% is not bad measure.
As usual, Mr Liddell hits the nail on the head, I would love his opinion on the strange case of British advertising. All adverts wether on TV, newspapers, posters etc all feature at least 30% plus ethnic minorities, mixed and mixed race families. Also strange, is that with any group of people (in these adverts) there is always an unnatural and contrived mix of races with the whites always in the minority. Take posters of models in shops - here in Ipswich, which incidentally has been overrun by the inhabitants of the more barbarous regions of the world - shops such as M&S and Primark feature up to 80% non white models in their window displays. To me this is both patronising to non white and discriminatory to white models who are losing out financially through racial discrimination. I believe that that the “establishment” has leant on businesses and advertising agencies to portray the country as more ethnically diverse than it really is, so that people just get used to seeing more and more non whites and subconsciously accept increasing numbers of immigrants. I’d love Rod to do some research on what is essentially a massive and dishonest social engineering project.
