If you go down more than 2 gears at speed isn’t it dangerous
I think you managed to become THE best source of motorcycle advice on UA-cam. Quality content + quantity of quality content + great watchability = you. Just an awesome job, I love what you're doing.
Thank you! Please keep helping me spread the word by sharing my videos!
He is great.
I absolutely agree. I have learned so much from Eddy!
Thanks!
I literally came down to the comments to type the same thing... Between your videos and "twist of the wrist" my overall riding level has improved drastically over a short period of time.
Hi MotoJitsu, surprisingly, I took quite well with shifting,I still need lots of practicing ,I think I expected myself to have real problems with, but,I was really pleased with my first practicing, I took to shifting Excellently for a beginner, however, these videos are crucial to me,to expert shifting ,thanks again friend 🙂🙂🙂
You’re welcome
This video has helped me understand downshifting the most. I realized I was letting the clutch out too fast.
Awesome!
Thanks for this. I heel & toe in my car all the time, but was just clueless on the right hand technique for the bike. Gonna practice in the garage right now!
Awesome!
Heel and toe all the time? Stop doing that to your daewoo.
I've been trying to learn to properly rev match on my fz09 and I swear it's so difficult. Sometimes I get it perfectly, sometimes I jerk it around like crazy it's so frustrating. Thanks for the vid! This definitely is helpful
I always felt like I was missing something when rev matching and I was. When I rev match, I never used the brake, and your the first person I've seen on UA-cam explain that.
Sweet!
The fact that im actually doing this unconsciously is running me crazy, when I try do it my bike is screaming in pain
am I the only one that thought the noise you made (down shifting) with your mouth was very convincing and actually helpful to understand? that was awesome.
lol!
ua-cam.com/video/NOYdzX9NyCI/v-deo.html
Hey man, I'm not sure if I posted on this one or a different video; but, this is exactly what I was getting at when asking about showing right vs wrong, the part you did about proper vs improper, or vice versa, was freaking awesome! Thanks again and no need to reply, really appreciate all the work you put into all this and going to jump over onto the patreon site a little later and send over some support.
Thank you!!
Finally!! Someone who actually makes sense .Thanks Brother
Perfect. Sounds beautiful on a cruiser with pipes too!
Thanks
Another fun way is to hold rpms when I pull in clutch wich you have to back off on throttle just a little so as not to over rev but then try to increase rpms so you are right where
You need the rpm when letting clutch back out. This is a continuation of my first reply I accidentally hit send. Anyway also sound cool
Many ways to do one thing.
Best teacher. Period.
Nice explanation (as always). I realized I know where you are. You are on that old road that runs parallel to sea world drive. I used to ride bicycles there with my kids when they were learning to ride. I am learning to ride an motorcycle now. I think I will go down there and practice-seems appropo.
Thanks :) Yes, it's a good spot
Good content + good quality + best explanation = motojitsu
Thanks a lot!
Lol i dont know if you’re supposed revmatch in a car but i do the same thing in my car: slow down, then i dont have to rev match. I assume its the same thing that it wont hurt the transmission because they are matching speeds.
thanks so much for your time and effort, for me it's the best tutorial for throttle blipping, stay safe bruv
I used to blip my toy trucks as a kid 🧒 not knowing that one day I use it often to rev match my motorcycle 🏍 in sync with rear tyres and engine gears ⚙️ change ,control !
Cheers Fast Eddie.
Nice!
We are taught to let out the clutch slowly as we throttle on when upshifting. When you blip, you are blipping the throttle as you pull in the clutch and downshift. What happens we you let the clutch back out? It doesn't seem like blipping is coordinating letting the clutch back out with giving the motorcycle gas. Intuitively, it seems like the bike would stall. I've only been on Jumpstart at the Harley Davidson dealer, so please bear with me.
Blipping/rev-marching is for downshifting only, not while upshifting.
@@MotoJitsu OK. But the technique still isn't clear. Say I'm in a 300cc in 4th gear going 45ish. I'm in start-and-stop and need to slow down. I brake down to say 25. Now I need to downshift to 2nd. Pulling in the clutch and kicking down twice is easy. As I release the clutch, I can give it a little throttle to stay around 25 mph. My understanding is that that is the regular way to downshift.
@@MotoJitsu So my confusion is, what do I do if and when I blip? If I'm at 45 mph and need to slow down to 25 mph, can I downshift using blipping? If so, how? Do I, all in the same motion, pull in the clutch, kick down, and blip the throttle? Do I have to do two blips seeing that I am kicking down twice? When is the clutch being let out when I do this, if at all? If it is being let out, what is happening with the throttle at the same time? Thank you.
It is. That's not rev-matching what you described.
That's what I explain in the video.
I was kinda anxious thinking I was damaging my first bike I bought 2 weeks ago by not rev matching. Will still practice rev-matching but at least whatever I've been doing so far is still ok! Thanks MotoJitsu, you have been so helpful in my learning on how to ride a motorcycle.
Personally I believe it is damaging the bike to not blip down. Dueling the gears up imho
@@Whitejesselink no it won't
I don't understand...if you don't rev match do you not experience any jerking when downshifting? You mentioned that some ppl can slow down enough to match their gear but my problem is that my RPM is lower than the gear I'm downshifting to.
When I want quality instructional videos for motorcycles This is Where I Come
Thanks!
I think rev-matching is a smoother transition when coming into a corner or trying to slow down. I believe you take more of a risk of locking your back tire up not rev matching if you don't downshift correctly without matching revs.
When you are not braking just downshifting with throttle blipping do you briefly roll off the throttle before the blip?
So would it be:
1. Roll off throttle
2. Blip while pulling in clutch and downshifting
3. Roll back throttle while letting out clutch
Thanks!
You always roll off the gas, that’s step 1
@@MotoJitsu Thanks for the reply! Do you ever pull the clutch in with the throttle engaged or is that bad practice? The more I think about it while I'm riding the worse I do, but I think the following worked best, does it seem correct?
1. For example 1/8 throttle open
2. Roll off throttle
3. Blip Throttle to say 1/4 while downshifting and pulling in clutch
4. Let out clutch while rolling back on throttle
I have watched a ton of videos, but I haven't been able to definitively confirm if they all roll off the throttle or just pull it in while the throttle is rolled on.
It’s all about feel and timing, there’s no perfect way to do this or that. I don’t even rev match anymore at all. It isn’t necessary
I'm from Sudan and you really help me a lot, thank you very much bro, keep it going you are the best
Here there is no courses so all info, I get from your channel and my little experience, thank you again bro
You're welcome!
For me its cheaper to replace the brake pads than clutch or transmission.
or valves
Do it right and you should have less wear and tear on your brakes and no damage to your clutch or transmission; it’s like butter when you nail it.
Joe Moslemian i agree thats the whole point. I don’t like using the brakes unless I really have to
So between engine braking and front brake, the rear brake might be used only 10% of the time?
All depends...sometimes I only use the rear brake when riding around 200+ miles in the twisties... or no brakes at all. All comes down to what you're doing, the pace, what you're practicing, etc.
Hey man idk if you'll see this, but I tried using my rear brake instead of front and it sort of worked? I just tap the rear brake a bit, and then rev match. It works smoothly most of the time compared to trying to grab the front brakes.. Is it dangerous in any way? My bike has front ABS and slipper clutch, 160CC.
Is it okay to just hold in the clutch the whole time as you’re slowing down but also downshifting? Like, usually I don’t let go of the clutch when slowing down, especially if I’ve gotta stop quickly at a stoplight/stop sign or in city driving. I just keep clutch all the way in and downshift the lever down to first while I brake to a stop.
Nevermind dumb question. Should’ve guessed you’d answer it in the video. Asked this before watching all of it lol
:)
MotoJitsu.com for my new app, books, merch, etc.
Awesome video. I have a question too! If I am on the highway and I accidentally fall into Neutral, in this case do you revmatch upshifting too? It has only happened to me twice but those times, I heard a loud clunk when I pulled in the clutch and shifted up.
thanks. No, only downshifting
Excellent vid!
thanks
It's ok to let out the clutch that rapidly when you shift? I was taught to let go of the clutch slowly and gradually but watching you is making me question what I learned from my MSF course.
The MSF is beginner level information...what this video is about is way higher.
do you need to be on the break to rev match or can you do it while constantly moving
surprised you would need to upgrade ktm brakes, maybe just try more aggressive pads. They will cause more rotor wear but worth the trade off to some.
That may be next
Keep in mind, most people would not have to...but I take this bike to the track and am using the brakes with max force to get slowed down enough before a corner....if you're not doing anything like that, the brakes are fine.
Question: do you close the throttle all the way when clutchless upshifting?
Could you accidentally clutch wheelie doing this I been thinking of practicing this back tire bounced real bad once spooked me.
If you rev it too high and release the clutch too fast.
how do you know how much to rev when dowshifting ?
The throttle blipping a more "foolproof" way of smooth rev-matching? I usually just slow down with engine braking/rear brake but sometimes its still a bit dodgy lol
blipping and rev-matching are the same thing...learn how to do everything, doesn't mean you have to every time.
3:00 Not needing to rev match is incorrect. Going from a higher to a lower gear at the same speed always raises the rpm. Thus revmatching is needed.
Wrong
nice explanation...thanks
You're welcome!
Sensei, is rev match something necessary? I’ve heard if you don’t rev match it’ll hurt your engine and the pistons of the bike
Nope, sure isn't. I don't at all anymore.
MotoJitsu.com for my new app, books, merch, etc.
sm style is the most fun to me.
sweet, good to know all styles
does i have to close the throttle fully or close the throttle a little bit when we do rev matching?
Close
@@MotoJitsu close fully or just close a little bit?
Is breaking necessary while doing rev matching?😊
Nope but most of the time you are otherwise there’s no point of rev matching
Is your book coming from amazons stock or from you? Like can you autograph it before it goes out or is amazon shipping from their own inventory

MotoJitsu® alright, I’ll shoot you an email or you email me your address and I’ll send it over. Fiveohfour@me.com
Hi great vid im qwite good at rev matching really but i find myself pulling the clutch lever all of the way in when im doing my blip. It's not really effecting it but ide like to get-out of pulling it in all the way. Any ideas to how i can stop this?
practice more
I feel like my brain automatically pulls full clutch in aha but I've found using to fingers helps
Does your bike have a slipper clutch? Mine is an earlier version and dosent have one
No
so while ur changing the gear u need to use a little throtle? but i thought is bad if u dont release the throtle when ur changing gear
re-watch the video
@@MotoJitsu i did
Does it HAVE to be done at the same time? Or when I'm slowing down to engine break, can I downshift and then rev up to match?
that's no longer rev-matching if you do that
@@MotoJitsu Thank you for your reply. Is this a bad technique? Is it bad for my engine?
al depends on how you're doing it...how much you're revving the engine, etc.
So can I use the back break or why the front?
whatever you want, go practice and see
Just iesterday i was looking about this stuff lol. But what about rear brake? You havent talked about it at all. I know its only 10% but it also should help the stability. Still lot of ppl dont use it because afraid of locking the rear tire. What do you think?
Normal shifting and stopping, I use it a lot, all the time. 10% only refers to it's power when emergency braking, otherwise has about 30%
@@MotoJitsu so you can keep braking with both while you downshift with no problem? Or should i release the rear one just for a moment untill i release the clutch after a downshift?
Thanks
You can use both, no problem. Like anything else, it's the technique that rules supreme.
Yes, you can keep braking with both.
I bet the guy on the bike was like "wtf is this guy doing?"
lol
I gotta say, when you finally do rev matching right, it is very satisfying... lol. It sounds cool!
YES! lots of fun lol
It is a very satisfying sound.
Ya fount it very satisfying too and makes me happy at the same time..
10,000 miles into my riding adventure, I still can't figure it out. Hopefully this video will help.
A few times it felt like I was going to get thrown off the back lol
Yes that's what I love about it

Watching your videos has made me realise how much I don’t know, and the more I don’t know the less safe I am. So I will be taking advanced classes. Keep up the good work!
That's awesome Jay!! That's great to hear...so much to learn.
Jay Alexander same here
Good lawd. Same here. 😒🤣
I don’t think I’m ready to rev match I’ve been practicing using UA-cam videos and I’m not getting the best results. I’m hoping there is an advanced course in my area soon

Dude I really hope you realize how amazing and insanely informative your videos are! (Your videos made my MSF course too easy for me 😜) Keep 'em coming man, love the channel!! 🤘
Thanks so much Josh! Please share with others!
Best explained tutorial to perform rev matching 😗
Thanks! Help spread the word and share the video :)
i love what youtube offers me.
me too!
11/10 sounds effects
:)
Outstanding instructional video. I started practicing rev matching with no front brake just to get the throttle, clutch snd shifter timing in sync. When I got comfortable with that series of motions I started rev matching and using the front brake. It was frustrating at first but I I began to acquire the feel for it and with the SV650 strong engine braking , rev matching and front brake application makes me feel I have even more control over the bike plus it is fun :)
This is by far the best down to earth MC instructional video channel on youtube! Great work!!!
Thank you so much DB!
Thank you so much. I just tried to rev matched downshift. It works and makes the downshift on my bike much smoother. Previously, it was quite clunky to do the downshift. Now.... super smooth and the effort on gear pedal is much lighter too. Thanks so much.
welcome!
MotoJitsu.com for my new app, books, merch, etc.
Watching this made me realize I forgot how to do a "normal" downshift. I always rev match.
Be good at both :)
Yes for real I also do rev match I kinda forget that there is a Normal shifting also🤣🤣🤣
I didn’t even know you could downshift without rev matching 😂
This probably my favorite UA-camr to help explain and teach motorcycle techniques. Just straight up raw material well-explained. Not edits or anything crazy, yet manages to keep my attention every second. Much appreciated fast Eddie!
I’m a motorcycle instructor who makes UA-cam videos...there’s a lot of UA-camrs who ride motorcycles 😊
Trying so hard to get this 😭😔 just have to continue practicing I guess.thanks for the vid
Keep at it
Hey man - you say to let the clutch out slowly always, but it looks like you’re letting it out pretty fast when you’re rev matching….is the clutch all the way out when you finish blipping the throttle, or is it only partially out and you continue to let it out more slowly after the blip?
Thank you so much for explaining this so well. I’ve watched tons of videos on rev matching trying to understand, but could not quite get it. This made it all come together, showing all the different ways to do it and hearing you say there’s no right or wrong. I kept feeling like I was doing something wrong by not rev matching. I’m still going to practice and see if I can’t learn it though.
You're welcome...time to go practice!
Fast Eddie, yes this technique took awhile to master (like you mentioned, using the front brake while Rev matching) but worth the effort to practice! I just finished Total Control Level One again, and even though I knew what was coming, the instructors keep pushing my current skills to new levels. Just fantastic instruction! BTW, one of the instructors was a Marine also, so I was defineately in the No Bullsh@t zone!
hahaha that's awesome!! Good for you for going back! Such a great course!
Best video I've seen on Rev Matching yet. An you even covered no clutch up shifting. Outstanding
Thanks Russ!
wassup Eddie... thanks for all your help man, I have been riding all my life and watching you has helped me with things I have forgotten and of course things I didn't know in the first place. What I know for sure is that I am a better rider for watching your videos.
Thank you so much!
Excellent video. No wasting time with musical intros and stuff. Straight down to the point. Helped me get it down to where I’m satisfied but still practicing
thanks :)
@@MotoJitsu no problem. Keep it up💯
Vid helped solve the mystery for me. Many mc vids on YT with helmet mount view show the throttle hand erratic, now I understand it's not erratic, its blipping. Thx FE🏁
YESS
How many fingers do You use on the clutch? 2, 3 or all four?
3
Thanks for a very informative video on down-shifting and rev-matching! Meanwhile, I wonder what advanced techniques the guy on the tricycle is practicing on the same road... :)
You're welcome
The BEST Rev Matching video on UA-cam ! Tbh i struggle with braking and rev matching at the same time ...correction at 8.25 you mean release the Clutch slowly not the Throttle , Sorry :)
thanks!
Nob here. Pass my MSF in Aug 2021, new rider. I’m lost, how did you up-shift at the start of the run without pulling in the clutch? Do you mean to tell me you can gear-shift as long as you blip the throttle?
yup...you don't have to use the clutch when upshifting
I'm a new rider too and I've never heard of this either, and I noticed that too. He didn't use the clutch when he did that. 🤔
I really appreciate how deep you go and much practical your videos are. When I looked for as many info as I could when I was complete beginner, I watched many motovlogs, but basically nobidy showed that much practical detals. Many gave only theory and did not show any example. Thank you for your videos.
Btw would you say that this Duke is good bike for touring for woman? I mostly mean if it is comfortable for longer trips. What does your gf say?
Thanks! It's mostly because people simply don't know or can't teach. I watch a lot of videos too and find many useless lol If you put a bigger windscreen on it, it would be a lot better...lots of wind with the little one. You could attach side bags too it otherwise you're limited to just a backpack, or strapping a bag to the rear seat.
I’m just here for the sound effects
I dont use front brake while rev matching.. Now i know the reason why I'm still fast even when i downshift.. Now it would take me a while to master revmatching with front brake.. Still thanks for a great video sir.. It really help a lot...
Yes, the front brake is the key when slowing...most of the power is there :)
@@MotoJitsu thanks a lot sir.. Keep up the good work and ride safe..
You're welcome

@@MotoJitsu I would start breaking early and then hold the back brakes during the blip then reapply the front brake after the blip. Tomorrow I'm going to go sit on my bike and try that technique you just showed me... Thanks Fast Eddie... U keep me alive out there...
I’m a new bike rider and I had no idea it was possible to upshift without any clutch input! Mind blowing 🤯 also extremely informative about downshifting effectively for every scenario.
:) sure is!
Thank you Sarah!!! It took me a minute to understand what was happening here... mind blown.. boom!!
I learned it was possible to do with a car as well, I’ve had some success but it’s much more difficult to get it right than on a bike.
The way you explained rev matching was so much more clear to understand. I’ve watched other people’s rev matching and was more confused afterward. You are very clear and knowledge able thorough on your videos. Thanks!
I'm glad, now go practice!
Sounds good on my MT-07 🔊👏👏 real music 😀
:)
This is the first video I’ve watched and from there I started watching all your videos
Thanks 😊
I wasn't aware we had to rev match and use front brakes lol. I've always been using the rear breaks for rev matching. I tried using the front after watching this video but it's much harder? should I be using the rear or front brakes? I don't want to get into the habit of doing something wrong. Many thanks ;)
Can with either one
Thank u sir, your explanation more easy for me to understand what was rev match for..👍
You're welcome!
So well explained...
Sometimes its seems more safer to rev match when going into a conner at a relatively higher speed.
I actually don't even rev-match anymore, not even for the track...but I think it's good to learn how to do everything....just adds to your experience and knowledge base.
@@MotoJitsu Do you mind telling us why you stopped rev matching? Is it more efficient or safer not to do? I’m asking because I currently learn to rev match and thought it only has advantages.
@@MotoJitsu do you no longer Rev match and blip the throttle when lowering gears? If so why?
is it bike dependent at all? I find clutchless upshift to be rough in 1st 2nd and 3rd.
Any bike
Doesn’t work on buell firebolt.. trust me.. always have to to clutch to shift
Dude you got mad skills. Even an old foogy riding a RGS bagger can learn from your vlog. Thanks.
Thanks Bradley!
So over time is Rev matching kinder on the longevity of engine, clutch and gearbox in comparison with “conventional downshifting” ??
No...it's just something to learn how to do if you want to. All depends on how you do it. I don't even do it all anymore..not even on the track.
Yes I actually do it as a practised habit most of the time if the speed warrants it as it feels smoother and mechanically more sympathetic but most of my riding is daily commuting into central London and I do wonder if all that extra wrist action is ageing my engine faster. I ride a 2020 Tracer Gt. it does sound better😜
If you want to rev-match..go for it :) I think people should learn it just like I think people should learn all techniques..doesn't mean you need it every turn.
Well, one thing for sure my instructor didn't teach me was smooth throttle control. He just yelled "close the gas", and so I did, so I was dangling on the bike like on a pig rodeo.
hahaha
Great expression. I want to practice that up shifting but i'm afraid eating my gearbox like cheese :DD
go practice
I had to practice this years ago when I watched your video on my semi-auto Honda Wave Dash 110cc for the sake of comfort. Downshifting was comically harsh for it, rev-matching solved made most of the experience smoother. (Note for anyone wondering: semi-autos have no clutch lever, but has a shifter. Holding the shifter down essentially was equivalent to pulling the clutch lever)
Due to the habit forming and carrying over to my new bike, still a small CC, GSX S150, you've practically saved my life many times over. Thank you Eddie.
Welcome!
Kapcai pun rev match ehh
Those clutchless manuals are tragic. Literally scary to downshift those horrible things.
@@Whitejesselink oh man you have no idea, the first gear tapped out at 25 kph. It was practically imperative to rev match it and everyone else wondered why I rode way smoother.
@@thenarrator1921 I was only on one once or twice from a friend's house that owned it to my house for some food. I didn't even think to try matching to be honest. Mechanical bull crap.
Hard to believe that's for kids. Could put you off riding all together
The gloves your wearing look comfortable, what are they? And thanks for taking the time to do these videos, sharing your knowledge. Semper Fi
Thanks! Sumo R www.leeparksdesign.com
MotoJitsu what size do you wear? I read that those gloves run bigger than most brands.

MotoJitsu thank you!
You're welcome! :)
I'll echo many others on here. By a mile the best on UA-cam. Hands down. I dont even watch the other's anymore. And I certainly have plenty to work on! And this makes it much easier to learn!
Thank you so much!
@@MotoJitsu Quick question though. I'll practice blipping in the am when I have a clear backroad, but can you blip the throttle clutchless? I can upshift no problem (former motocross racer, but new to street bikes and street riding), so learning something new everyday!
I wouldn't downshift without using the clutch.
I really like this video explaining rev matching it's a great and clear description. What is the purpose of engine braking is from a performance standpoint? I understand rev matching to drop gears into a corner to avoid upsetting the bike's balance or spinning the rear wheel. But since engine braking can only work on the rear wheel how can using it actually improve deceleration performance over brakes alone?
Engine braking is just rolling off the gas to slow down, just like taking your foot off the gas pedel of a car

when im in the city i do normal downshifting. But when im away in the city i do rev-matching. lol
Ok :)
Is there any use for this off the track, besides being funish?
I don't even do it on the track anymore
MotoJitsu.com for my new app, books, merch, etc.
I think you scared the hell out of that guy when you caught up to him @6:15 after he gave you that strange look @4:00 😋
hahahaha
Sounds like double clutching but for bikes basically? Sounds advanced for sure. I'll stick with basic shifting for now till I can get in a class. also I'm on a TW 200 and If I shift down to 4th gear im goin 25 lol. wooo 12 hp.
