Have you thought about making a youtube channel about chemistry? I know that's a "pull yourself by your bootstraps" solution, and a roll of a dice on whether it'll pay at all, but... I just don't have anything else to help you with, and it seems like you really need help.
Some people really support themselves this way, and I'm fascianted and kind of considering trying it myself, so I thought I'd share the idea with you.

We are all born mad thank you for the suggestion! I actually started this account for the reason of making science videos, but I started to feel overwhelmed by the high production value of so many other science channels out there. I could never afford computer animation or some of the other fancy things they use. If anything, I’m ready at this point to start a channel for other people who are going through tough times. I think being honest about our struggles is really necessary in this world during a time where everything has been glossed over, airbrushed and photoshopped for social media.

It's so entitled to want someone's labor for free. If I were to go into a designer store and ask to pay $0.00 for a bag that costs $1,000, I would be laughed out of the store. So, why do employers think they should get someone's labor for free? I worked and studied really hard to get the skills needed to perform the job. I also took out student loans to get that training.

    • @EbonyRivers1

Companies do this simply because they can, and it’s wrong. Pay something, even if it’s not a lot. My company pays its interns, but they’re only there for around 6 weeks. The work that we do is so technical that I honestly don’t see how some kid from off the street can come in, get adequate training, and produce something in just six weeks. They give these little dummy assignments just to say you completed a program at ABC company. From this perspective, internships are simply a resume filler. But maybe other companies are different.

    • @emmacat3202

@@DegreesOfThree I'm not blaming anyone. And it's not a bad decision, because I need one in order to get a job in my field. I'm just pointing out that it's absurd that companies expect people to work for free. No one asks doctors and plumbers to work for free. Typical conservative behavior to think that someone is entitled for wanting to get paid for their labor.

I did an unpaid internship many years ago. It was required to get my certificate. I had to quite my job, because all the internships were only during the day. I saved up money before my internship to pay my bill's.
The company that I did the internship for actually needed another employee. They decided they would just keep getting interns.
Just recently a company that I worked for started a paid internship program. The con for us employees is it meant less job advancement, because they were giving the jobs to the interns.

I DID choose my degree although I don't make much more than minimum wage working it. I often think about going back to my old life because this job/career is much harder than my old one. It's not the government that set the school's standard for internships but rather the school itself. I actually had to PAY for my internship, just like the speaker stated. It did provide me with a lot of insight and experience, which I appreciate very much, although not everyone can afford to do so and that sets the standard to make it unfair.

I'm here because my music business class had posted an old interview of a well known lawyer who said that the best way to break into the industry was to sell yourself for free and find someone who does what you want to do and follow them around and get their lunch and laundry and do it for free. Do you know who can afford to do this right now? Rich kids. Kids who don't have to worry about paying $1000 in rent just to live in the cities with the most opportunity to even get an internship. Kids who don't have to overexert themselves working an extra job to get by. It would be nearly impossible to even spend 20 hours a week working for free and then making rent. If we don't do something, the wealth gap will just continue to increase.

Mortuary science grads have to do a year unpaid internship.
Thus the high number of students at the start, yet see very few actually working in the industry as a paid employee.
With unbelievable student loan debt on top as well...payments due to begin within 9 weeks of graduation.
How do you support yourself, and pay back student loans, while working 60 hrs a week for free?
As well at the end of internship, hardly no funeral homes hire the interns...they just replace them with a new batch of free employees.

I've had four internships thus far and always have been compensated. Even my first one in high school when I did nothing more than scan papers for 9 months after school, I got $8.50 an hour. Eventually I was able to go to $16, then $27, and finally over $33 an hour with overtime opportunities and a job offer out of college. Each of these I had no skills going in other than learning how to learn at my previous ones. There's no need to work for free.

@@grapjai9452 I went to school to be a tax CPA. The first internship was essentially just administrative paper pushing for a financial planning company that did tax returns.
The second was preparing tax returns at a local CPA firm. Many of the forms I worked with were the same ones I used to scan at my first internship. Only now I was doing the next step of the process. My original plan was actually to get a similar experience through a volunteer program so I could add the skills to my resume. Luckily I found a place willing to pay instead.
The third had nothing to do with accounting and was quite frankly boring. I only did it because it was at a well known corporation, well paid and my only offer for that summer.
The fourth and eventually fifth were at two of the Big 4 Accounting firms. I was offered these primarily because of my experience preparing tax returns from the second internship. I got offers from both to work full time and chose the fourth.

You have no clue how hard it is for modern young adults these days world wide. With debts after college and finances cut from parents(obviously) unless graduates been saving whatever money they have after college(which is almost zilch) you give them unpaid internships they tend to work 12work hours each day. 8 hrs unpaid internship, 4 hours part-time for money. I have couple of friends like in those situations and they've all developed heavy alcoholism and smoking. You want bright passionate next gen? You won't get any with slavery.
This so called idealistic mentorship, is only available in select companies, NOT EVERYWHERE. And about 80% it's really just learning about office politics, not technical skills. All the places I interned, I learned the techniques and skills to perform the jobs by myself. Unpaid mentorship programs, is just Don-Kedick hogwash.

While many unpaid internships can be exploitative, a lot of companies also use them for work they would otherwise simply automate, do without, or hire more competent people to do. 52 unpaid interns might still be better than the alternative, if the alternative is one more salaried employee who needs 4+ years of experience. That person may do a better job, but they aren’t worth the cost if interns can do the job acceptably. Is it really unfair to ask people to pay now to get experience that will pay them back later, or is this just another example of how egregious poverty or unreasonable immigration restrictions hurt the economy, rather than a problem in and of itself?
