  • This video demonstrates on how to clean scratched old black marble using hand pads. Hand pads are minor tools but quite useful for small work piece or corners.
Before using these kinds of tools, grit selection will be very important. You'll need to choose right kind of grit for the surface you are going to polish.
These kinds of products are called "diamond hand pads".
The important point will be the selection of "grits".
Below are some links who sell these kinds of product.

    About selection of grits:
The grit selections depends on the condition of the surface you are going to polish.
For example, for commercial finish, below work material should be like below, although I've done by #500, #1000, #2000, #3000.
    #150, #200, #500, #1000, #2000, #3000
This is because you cannot remove deep scratches by fine grits.
On the contrary, if the surface do not have deep scratches, starting from coarse grit will ruin your stones.

Polishing my white mable proved easy. However, the black one has become a nightmare. I can get some gloss, but not much. The area was pretty bad to begin with, but it got worse now... :-(
I noticed though, that water seems key to the process and I need lots of it. I am just like dreading the mess it will be for the large area I have. Also, I realize, I will probably have to do by hand the black one. Whenever I try the machine, it gets worse (my polisher does not have a water inlet and I need to spray)... Will keep trying and your video helped to see that the original is indeed possible.

Thank you for your comment. The polishing tool in this video include diamond abrasive. Selection of these grits in each process also change the result of polished surface. As your remark, polishing by machine would be difficult to make good surface in some case. In my own case, hand tool can achieve higher gross compare to polishing machine. I suppose this has something to do with the concavity and convexity of starting surface of marble. Hand tool's surface easily fit into bumpy surface it might be easy to make high gross surface. But does not suit for making "flat" surface. If you cannot achieve gross by machine, there's a method using acid like agent for marble cleaning.

    Amount of water:
I recommend to use plenty of water during the polishing and after the each grit to wash out the particles.
These particles sometimes become the cause of scratches.

How long do you use each pad for more or less? I do not have that tool to see the degree of polishing

Are hand pad all made equal?
I ordered Stadea hand pad from amazon but was not able to get decent result. Even starting with 3000 grit, it just dulled the surface.
My surface is compressed marble, could this be the reason? Or should i try to get another brand of hand pad to try?
    Many thanks

wlongsan jji32 did you ever figure it out? I tried 3000 grit and no shine, looks like we need to use a compound ?

Well, frankly speaking each manufacturer has different quality.
If you have rough surface with scratches to be polished, one example for polishing process would be as follows.
    #200, #400, #1000, #2000, #3000
3000 grit will be the finest grit. It means that abrasive particles contained inside will be the smallest.
#200 contains really large abrasive compare to the #3000. These are for grinding down the scratched surface. You will have to proceed step by step to obtain good surface.

Tried sanding with diamond pads. 50,200,400,800,1500,3000 grit on Nero marqina. No shine at all. Any ideas?

Probably, #50 is too rough to start with. How about starting from #400 or #200? Polishing stone is equal to making scratch on its surface. So it's important to choose the right grit depends on its surface.

    Thanks for watching my video.
If I can see the actual surface of your polished marble and tools, I can say more clearly but at the moment my suggestions are below.
Was the work material was really natural marble?
These days stones called "manmade stone" or "engineering stones" are quite popular. Some of these looks like natural stones but the characteristics are different. You need to use suitable tools for these.

All that work and product cost for a tiny area of lovely shine. Based on that it would take a month just for level one. What a shame. It does obviously work yhough.
