I think you're right. If they were actually watching the market, narrative-driven story-rich games are still in strong demand. Gamers just don't want *their* narrative or *their* stories and have said so with the dollars that drive the industry. Good for 11 Bit for realizing they were about to pour bad money after good.
Yeah I’m sure they saw Dustborn and some of these others crash and burn. I hope to see more of these studios realize that “modern audience” they were trying to court is non-existent.
They saw the iceberg in time and steered their ship before it ultimately flunked. They may have lost time, money and some employees in this cancelled project but atleast the studio is still around. They still have a future so it's how they act going forward that people will pay attention to.
The Pendulum swings, seems that the gamers, who BUY THE GAMES, are indeed back in control. In positive news: I bought Metaphor : Re Fantazio. The Persona game gone "lets do a more classic style RPG" ... yeah. This looks fun.
One day ill check it out, still have SMT 3 and 5 to get through before jumping into another Atlus game. Even playing Dragons Crown AND Odin Sphere im trying to play xD.
I think indies or smaller game studios can "change their ways" because unlike the "AAA or AAAA games" companies, they don't have a "unlimited supply of funds", so in the end its all about money, and the big corpos are being Narcissisistcs because they have those "infinite money glitch". So while we the gamers were Once their source of money, until they (the AAAs) lose those investors and "investors" they won't change their ways, but this is a clear and obvious sign that the "Market is always right" and its INDEED a Matter of Taste
When I think "narrative rich" that there is a limited market for, the first thing that comes to mind is Tell Tale Games, which closed up after 2018. Maybe Stray Gods would fall into that category? If you've spent 6 years and 11 million without any concept art postings, it sounds more shady than anything to me. The Puppies are getting so big 😍
Based on what I read about this, it sounds like the development wasn’t going well, the cost was ballooning, and they were concerned it wouldn’t sell well enough to make a profit. As for the reason why for each, we can only guess. Bad management, extensive rewrites and restarts, etc. We may never know the actual reason. I’d like to know what they mean when they say narrative driven single player games don’t sell. I’d like to think that they’re not going to follow the trend of making a full price always online PvE with microtransactions.
Game Devs: Oh no! The natives are restless tonight! Gamer 1 looking at another shoddy game: Are you going to buy this steaming piece of crap? Gamer 2: Nope. Gamer 3: Hey! This old game is on sale for $5! Gamers 1 and 2: Where?
I remember back in the day I used to play choice of word games on steam, and those were mobile games. So would be surprising, also I think they did well in at least providing benefits to the ppl who worked on the project since this was probably pull the rug under them
there is that, but one other possibility: 2018 market "profit" was comprised of both investment as a politics-driven enticement and (only secondarily) sales. this financial set up incentivized dei, esg, and a host of other poor business decisions. if, under the incoming regime, this heavy-handed, blackrock push is no longer as lucrative (or even possible) for executive self-enrichment, it would better explain why 11 bit decided to scrap project 8 being forced to accede to actual profit strategies...
This video is so stupid i don t even know where to start . " I dont know anything about this cancelled game but here is my video where i m building a strawman " .

The thing i find curious is where they find all the money to spend and just cancelled it.
