  • In 1996, New Zealand was about to go into its first MMP general election, the biggest change in the electoral system since women gained the vote in 1893.
It marked the start of a new era in politics, one which required two votes, not one - and not everyone was chuffed about it.
The Electoral Commission was on a mission to educate the public on the new voting system with a public education campaign.
So the catchphrase “MMP: It takes just two ticks” was blasted onto television sets around the country. The ads featured the Footrot Flats' Kiwiana icons, Wal’, Dog and the rest of the Footrot Flats gang.
But a year on from the election, MMP still had its critics, which Paul Holmes discovered on the streets of Auckland.

As someone who was born in a post MMP world, it is interesting to see the way it was discussed at the time.

He was a wanker even then, causing trouble in the first coalition government and at it again as we speak.

The goal is that no one party is the winner, they have to compromise through a coalition so more of NZ is represented

MMP? A question, what can a labour or national government do differently for a low class worker like me?

What are you on about remember how this came about National got in with a lot less votes than Labour and had a good majority in parliament which pissed off the majority of New Zealanders so they wanted change and MMP was voted in and what’s wrong with special votes I’m from the Waikato and was down the South Island at that time and had a special vote it should be nice move majority

Unfortunately it opened up pandora's box with loonies like the Greens and Te Pati Maori eventually coming on board, and it has seen the demise of the Labour Party which is as bad thing, mind you that was self inflicted, they've shot them selves in the foot well and truly.
