I've always done a spaced pair for overheads because for some odd reason I thought all the other spacings were inferior. But hearing the sound of your XY configuration I think I might try that. and I think I'll just end up using room mics to give my drums the sense of space. My secret weapon mice however is an Octava Mk-219. Old Russian mic and it is just so pretty sounding! Use it for kick out, room, or hi-hat and it always performs!! Thanks for another amazing video!
Those drums sound really good
Thanks, you can hear the final version of them. Song just came out, "Hot Damn" - SJ McDonald.
Cool video, I love experimenting .
The SM7 does sound sweet, though I love a 441 on the hat - it sounds like how my ear hears the hi hat naturally. Your overheads sound great. A couple times I've been blessed to be in a studio that has KM 84's, what a treat! KM 184's I don't like though. Recording drums on my own with the lower budget mics I have, I really dig using my Fat Head II's in Blumlein, fat sound and a sweet top end.
Both excellent mics. For the style hats that we were using the sm7 is buttery smooth. I love the 441.
Cool Sound Man. Less is huge !
My church let’s me track drums there on their stage kit and it’s got 8 mics. They sound pretty good but unfortunately in a drum cage. The back half is insulated and the front half is round glass. I can make them sound decent but it’s hard to get them to really mesh well with the rest of the song. Been trying different ways to get them to sound better, it’s getting there! Would love a nice room but that’s what I’ve got for now
Sounds fantastic! That snare sounds amazing. Did you do any sample aligning? And have you ever tried stereo mixing the snare top?
Max Dickenson thanks buddy! No that is just the raw recording. No samples, no mix or anything. It’s a Supraphonic snare. What do you mean by stereo mixing the top?
Andrew Masters my bad. Auto correct got the best of me. Stereo micing
Oh! No I’m a big fan of as few mics as possible. The less phase issues the better!
Andrew Masters couldn’t agree more.
I remember in the previous video you stated that you had to go back and get your warm audio pre’s. What did you use them on? I usually do all my processing inbox. But now I’m getting into outboard gear. I have a Focusrite 18i20 3rd gen, Focustrite Clarette 8 pre, universal audio 710 as well as a ART tsp II. Just trying to get some more ideas about how to advance my sound. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I love using Neumann km184's as my drum overheads!
Those are great
Great stuff !! Have you tried the Shawn Everett Chopsticks thing ? That would be a cool video
Thanks! I don’t think so, what’s the chop stick thing? He and I worked together for a few months on a record for John legend but I don’t remember any chop sticks outside of the kitchen ;)
@@AndrewMasters Playing drums with chop sticks .He mentioned it on this interview(min 30): ckua.com/listen/inside-the-musical-mind-of-shawn-everett/
I also heard Greg Wells talk about the importance of light touch on Hanging out with Audiophiles so there might be something there
Oh, you mean as far as the drummer’s performance? Totally, hitting the drum just enough to let it resonate and have those beautiful dynamics is huge and makes all the difference.
Great video and sound,i have an question for you,you have an Apollo 8p? If yes, do you ear big difference between the UAD plug-in preamp like Neve, Api ecc. And the real hardware unit?
I have the x 8p, but I haven't been able to shoot them out. Yet! I've shot out the 1081 vs the neve 273, and that is indistinguishable. I'll do a video on that sooner than later.
Beautiful presentation…
My only question is, what up with the “techno-ish music” playing throughout?
Not that I don’t like it, but it seemed NOT from your drum test that you recorded… unless I’m wrong. 🤷♂️
Your tom mics are a little higher off the skins than I've usually had it in the past. Any specific reasoning for that? My guess is probably balance between proximity and allowing physical space for the lower wavelengths to actually form before they hit the mic?
Just a sound preference, no scientific reasoning. Depending on the song, I may have a closer tom mic position or not!
What preamps did you use?
Kick in 1081
Sub Kick 512
Sn Top 1081
Sn Btm Scully tape head mic pre
Tom 1 512
Tom 2 512
OH WA73
Mono 87 Custom Made Pre
Hat Custom Made Pre
Room Custom Made Pres
I don't know the exact name of the custom pres, they were designed after the EMI Mic Pres.
Cheers!
The audio in this video is mono, can't hear the mix the way you wanted
