I have a year old monkey puzzle tree in a pot. When do I place it in the ground?
Thats fantastic you have a year old Monkey puzzle, its best to wait until your Monkey puzzle tree is about 2 feet tall before planting into the ground, usually from when they are about 5 years old, planting into the ground, happy growing and thanks so much for watching XXXX
I've repotted 3 today, but put them with a decent amount of topsoil... will this be ok?
Hi there! Love your channel, keep it up! About Araucarias though, these are very large plants and in order to establish themselves in the wild they will quickly develop deep roots, and if you keep them in shallow pots for a long time you're basically stunting their growth or killing them. South American Araucaria seedlings (A. araucana from Chile/Argentina and A. angustifolia from Brazil) need to be planted in pots that are at least 15-20 cm deep and about 15cm wide, and should be planted in the ground (preferably in areas with deep soil) when they grow their first branches (like your plants!). That way you make sure they'll survive. Araucaria araucana is very tolerant of cold climates (they grow in the Andes mountains after all) and live to be 500-800 years old in the wild! Don't keep them in little pots like that or they won't last. :-(

Oh my gosh am I ever glad to see you sharing this video and showing how these bugs are good and wont harm the plants. I watched a video last week where a girl was so distraught she was going to throw out all of her plants because she had similar bugs in the soil. I tried to encourage her not to do so without being rude and I hope I didnt come off rude. But I was so surprised to see such an extreme reaction to bugs when as I told her... Life Attracts Life. I have a 30 yr old male 30 ft tall and 4 babies I grew from seed obtained on the internet. The babies are about 2 inches tall. I am wondering if and when to get them permanently planted outside. Obviously there is no hurry since your transplants are only 5 ish and you are putting them back in pots. Mine is fairly hardy we usually get snow and one yr 3 ft. but it wasn't bothered. Here in the Portland Oregon area there are a lot of 100-year-old trees that were given away at our world fair about that long ago. Very nice informative video

Now the Araucarias will be happy. We have a lot of them here. Although some years that we had snow here some lost their plants. Huge trees die in one day. So sad. You must make a vlog in the place you got the seeds. It will be so fun to watch.

@@desertplantsofavalon I have about 18 monkey puzzle trees seedlings that I sewed on December 6th 2021 and there are about 6 in tall and starting to have their side branches. At what point should I repot them, is a too early yet. And are 1gallon pots the best size to go upto

I'm in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada and yes spring is around the corner I've already been cleaning up debris in the garden from last autumn so that I'll be able to till it in a couple weeks. I've been growing the monkey puzzle trees seedlings under T5HO fluorescent lights in something called a nanodome and was surprised how fast they grew. It was fun to push the seed pods halfway into the potting mix and watch the seed pods be pushed out of the soil as they grew and then the tendril that came from the seed pod dried up and it was just an empty shell. Now the MPT are not attached to the seeds anymore and have their own root system so in a few more weeks once it's even warmer outside I'll put them on the back deck to get natural sunlight in 1 gallon pots. I must say they were the most interesting trees I've ever grown. I also like to grow redwood trees such as giant sequoias, dawn Redwoods in the coast Redwoods. I've had good luck with them all so should be able to have good luck with the monkey puzzle trees when they get bigger outside. I've seen some around the botanical gardens here and they seem to be doing good. I hope you had a good St. Patrick's day also, and had a good feed of corned beef and cabbage boiled dinner also...😋 ☘️

I am old enough to remember when they were popular in people's gardens, problem was the victorians who loved them, planted them too close to the house, and I also remember a lot having to be felled 😪

Thats fantastic that you have bought one of these amazing Monkey puzzle trees, yes it will be ok to stay in its 3 gallon pot if it is quite large, but its best to repot into a smaller or bigger pot depending on its height now its spring thanks so much for watching and have a fantastic Monday XXXX

Please tell me where I can get one. I love this tree so much. Everyone is out of them I will pay foe one. I live in northern Baltimore county. We get very cold weather at times. Can't we grow them by cuttings...??
Hi Saikumar :-D yes you can grow them from cuttings, but it is very difficult to do and a lot of growers don't have success with rooting from cuttings and it is much easier from seed, although its a very long process from seed, thanks so much for watching XXXX

Lovely trees. My favourite type life on this planet.
They are interesting trees but beware, once mature they can be 70' tall and when they drop their CONES it can be deadly. These cones are solid and hard, weighing in at 10 lbs+. We have a public park here in California that has many of them. On one occasion a truck was destroyed after parking near it. Every year, a special machine is brought in to shake the trees, similar to nut trees being shaken, to get as many of the death-cones to fall as they can. Also, the cleanup of the dropped leaves or small branches will warrant heavy gloves and the like. They WILL puncture and cut easily.
So very true these trees can grow to giants, and WOW at their cones being deadly and they can be large and heavy, I would not want to be standing under one of these trees and being hit with the cones, thanks so much for sharing the info about them and thanks so much for watching XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon Gotta love Araucaria! However, I do believe that some of the contributors here might be a bit confused as to the different species. While there may very well may be some A. araucana in the northern coastal areas of Ca., I believe that most people are looking at A. bidwillii - the Bunya Pine ( also known as false monkeypuzzle). I have never seen an A. araucana in Ca - but I have seem many A. bidwillii there. Keep in mind that A. araucana does not tolerate high temperatures- so if you are in the hot parts of the state, I doubt that you are looking at a true monkey puzzle. A. bidwillii has even larger cones ( 22lbs) and is the species that you would have no parking/ walking under. I was recently in Oakland at the Gardens at Lake Merrit - and the lovely Arboretum there. A very nice docent excitedly showed me the gigantic ' Monkey puzzle ' growing there. It was a beautiful tree - but it was not A. araucana, it was a bunya pine ( from Australia). She did not seem to believe me, but she approached me shortly after and told me she had consulted with her manager, and it was indeed A. bidwillii. Long and short of it : unless you are in Sunset Zone 17 along the coast, or a sweet spot with elevation inland, you are most likely not looking at a true monkey puzzle. Now, up here near Seattle you will see many A. araucana, and in warm microclimates A. angustafolia. You will see no A. bidwillii here ( of mature size). I could be wrong, but I do grow all three ( A. bidwillii in a half whiskey barrel- in the shop during cold spells)
Also, in my opinion, you would be hard pressed to grow a monkey puzzle on most of the East coast ( I know- I tried many times) nevermind Florida. It is just too hot. There was one at Longwood Gardens in Philly for some years- but it is dead now. You could probably grow A. angustafolia in FLA, and A. bidwillii if you were zone 9 or higher, but not A. araucana. I lived and traveled up and down the east coast for 45 years and never saw A. araucana other than mine more than a few years old - an I was looking all the time. I sold them at my nursery in Virginia ( from Oregon)but they all died within 3/4 years. Mine grew to 12ft - then died
My MPT is a three years old and is slowing turning brown although it has new growth. I can post a pic but any thoughts on why this might be? I've repotted it, according to your video and still no improvement. I can't figure out what he needs -- more water or less? More light or less? He is such a neat tree, I'd love to figure out what his problem is. Thank you. I can post a pic, if that would help.
So sorry to hear about your Monkey puzzle, I have known a few people also to have this problem with their Monkey puzzles they have been growing both from seeds and also bought ones, and I used to have a a 5 foot high Monkey puzzle in my old garden that was thriving but then also went brown from the base up I am not sure why this happens and I hate to say it it may not be savable, they do like to be kept in very well draining soil but this may not be a rot problem but more a virus that may affect these trees, if you are giving it plenty of light and not overwatering it its best to see how the tree grows in the spring, it may send out new growth and I will keep my fingers crossed for you XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon Thank you for your response. I did replant it last summer and added in perlite to see if drainage was the problem. It is putting out new growths. Have you heard of anyone that cut off all the brown parts to see if that helped? The root looked ok last summer. Thank you again and I sure hate to lose it.
How long do the seeds take to germinate? And how long untill they get to the proper size? Thanks
Hi there :-D the seeds can take anything from a month to 6 months to germinate and some of mine took 3 months and a few even 6 months patience is the key :-D they can take many years to reach 1 feet high, and 150 year to reach full size haha :-D thanks so much for watching and sending lots of love and plant power your way XXXXX

Magnificent! I recently purchased one specimen of Araucaria bidwillii , one tiny specimen of Araucaria angustifolia, and of course, one tiny little seedling of Araucaria araucana. For I have always been fascinated with these trees for 45 years, since I was very young. Thank you Lyn, for we are on a quest to save these mighty trees, and restore them to their God given right to exist on this planet. I have always been a bit of a paleontologist, and a paleobotanist, as you are. My favorite heroine is Mary Anning, (21 May- 1799- 09 March 1847) who, of course discovered the first fossil of the Icthyosaur embedded in the cliffs of South England. I was hooked. From there, my interest in the ancient botanical world, and the history of the natural world blossomed. I collected trilobite fossils, replica dinosaur fossils, ( for I could not afford an actual dinosaur fossil) Anything associated with primeval plants in particular. I went to great lengths to find these specimens, cycads, dawn redwoods, ancient ferns still alive today, and I am proud to say that they are still thriving on my property. Yes indeed, Plant Power! From one Scientist to another, I Salute You. Go Ireland!

Dear Doctor Lyn. I do not wish to disturb you, however I have the fantastic news that I received my first specimen of Sequoia giganteum this afternoon from an outfit called www.scenichillfarmnursery.com. I could not be more jazzed! This little guy stands about, well I have difficulties converting metrics to feet, so I will say this little one is about the length from my elbow to the tips of my fingers. Soil not included. It is an amazing little tree, and I am astonished that I paid only $19.90 US dollars for it. I tried looking up the conversion site for converting US dollars in to UK pounds, unfortunately, my computer froze up on me. However, the rates are very similar, and I know, for I have ordered many items from across the pond, and they have arrived much faster than my current employers here in the USA could do for me in a week. (Talking about uniform and equipment issues... etc) Anyways, I digress, back to the subject, So with much anticipation, I opened the box....drum roll please... and I cannot describe the joy I felt upon viewing this little baby in my hands. I was very emotional. For we used to take travels to the Sequoia National Forest when I was very young, and I always wanted to go back there. This little tree is a delight to behold, it has green foliage, I mean honestly, I ordered it on June 18th, and today, 3 days later, it arrives in a box on the first day of summer. Indeed, a true miracle in my eyes. So of course, I immediately potted it, watered it, and put it in the warm sun so that it might breathe. And currently, I am checking on my Araucaria angustfolia, Araucaria bidwilli, Honorable mentions not to be left out, Sequoia sempervirnes, Lepidozamia perroffskyana, Ginko biloba, Cycas circinallis, Taxodium dichum, and last, but not least, for we always save the best for last, the mighty Araucaria araucana. This little specimen is about six inches tall, and (God willing) seems to be growing! Hoo Raah! The whole group of them are looking splendid basking in the rays of sunlight. I found a youtube video on the Monkey Pine which I thought you might get a kick out of. Its titled (Araucaria-the Monkey Puzzle Tree courtesy of OrmandyPubBand......It left me in stiches! Further update. The little Monkey Puzzle Tree is growing! Yes! I can see the little tips of the main apex growing day by day, for I watch them, day by day, and my other trees, Araucaria angustifolia, Araucaria bidwilli. They are living fossils growing here, on God's green earth. And after all of the million years that that they have endured, they are thriving. Save a tree ....Amazing......
