The model seen here is the Microplane Classic Zester model 40001. It's purpose is for grating / zesting limes, lemons, oranges & other citrus fruit. It's made of surgical stainless steel in the USA. It's sold with a convenient cover to keep it from accidentally handled or brushed up against when not in use. Dimensions are as follows: 12in x 1 1/3in x 1/3in with a weight of 3 oz. It's light, compact and gets the job done. It's sharp and provides fine threads of whatever is being used on it.
In the video here, lemon zesting is demonstrated as well as being used on a carrot. You can see the fine size of the product which the Microplane grater yields after it's done. The amount of pressure used was not too hard, but not too soft. Sometimes with coarser grate holes more force needs to be applied. Here, you can see that as a lemon zester, this tool works perfectly, as expected and as advertised.
The grater tool was not used on other food in the video, but have confidence that it will work great with food / spices of similar size like nutmeg and even as a ginger grater. Other things that you might use with this zesting tool are potatoes, garlic, and carrots. In a pinch, if cutup properly, you might be able to use it as coconut grater.

If you don't use the unit too often, not having power to use it when you really need it is a pain. You'll end up bringing out the hand grater in the end. If you need a different size, Microplane makes many other grating, zesting and shredding products. Also, brands like OXO, Kitchenaid, and Ikea make excellent gourmet grater zesters.
