Yeah, Smallville was my whole 20s pretty much. I spent the decade struggling through an aerospace engineering degree, learning after every failure how to get back up better. I wouldn’t finish until I was 35 but those 10 years were the worst of it. The series was both a weekly escape and an inspiration to keep going. In some ways it’s difficult to go back to without the flood of both the good and bad emotions, but I’m planning to in recognition of the show’s 20th anniversary and all that I’ve accomplished in that time.
I was 5 in 2001 , takes me back to times that felt less divided.
Even before Superman and Lois, we had Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman. That makes 3 Superman shows in modern times, not two. I love Superman too! He’s ABSOLUTELY my favorite superhero of all time!
Yeah, I would count that as modern as well, with maybe the Superboy TV series that ended the year earlier in ‘92 and everything before being “pre-modern”.

Smallville for me was age 8 to 18. I grew up on it. Became a mad obsessed blu ray collector and 3 years ago I sold my entire collection. The one thing I wanted to get a release of was the first 5 seasons.. now they're here.
My favorite show of all time here in Smallville. Can't wait to buy that set and rewatch my favorite characters Clark, Lana and Chloe go through all of their adventures again. Happy 20th anniversary Smallville!

I always love it when they package it with all the cases and stuff. When I put things in my Blu-ray collection I want it to line up with other things
Season 5 of Smallville had an HDDVD release, so it was already in HD. However I'm pretty sure that the show was filmed using 35mm cameras, so it wouldn't need to be an upscale either way if the just rescanned the film. None of the visual effects would be re-rendered, but the actual non effect shots would still be native 1080p.
This has been the subject of much discussion here in the comments! Yes, it was sourced from 35mm footage, but the masters don't appear to be 1080p. To my eye, they look more like 720p upscales from the original 480p television masters. But this statement itself is the subject of debate. I do not believe they've rescanned the film elements, however, others think they have.
@@CerealAtMidnight I had the HD-DVD of Season 5 and it was clearly HD in my opinion. Yes, 720p I believe, but it clearly looked better. I went to Season 5 for all the best episodes..."LEXMAS", "RECKONING". So good!! (Just found your channel today and I am looking at much of your content!)

Definitely got this preordered. I've had the "HD" of the entire series on Amazon for like 6 years. Though 1-5 were just the upscale they look way better than the DVD.
Not sure if 5 is an upscale. Since Season 5 came out on HD DVD, which was battling blu ray.
Great review haven’t picked up the Smallville complete series Blu-ray Disc box set yet but will soon was waiting for the corrected disc to be in the box set. Superman & Lois Season One on Blu-Ray Disc I do own however and it’s a amazing series so far !!!

There was 4 seasons of (Adventures of) Superboy in the 80s/90s on DVD at long last. It was action, comedy, a bit of romance w/ a smoking hot Lana & a great 2nd Luthor in the 2nd to 4th seasons of the series. The last 2 seasons of Superboy had an X-Files vibes before that series started. I have the Smallville DVDs & I think I'll keep them. Thanks for selling me on Superman & Lois though.
When the series finale premiered in 2011, I was graduating from high school. I grew up with this show 😁 The one thing that I always thought that Smallville did well was the season premieres and season finales. Season fives finale of Clark being trapped in the Phantom Zone was mind blowing, I had a hard time waiting for the season 6 premiere lol. I also loved the season 6 finale of the phantom using Clark’s DNA to essentially be the shows version of Bizarro. This show brings back a lot of good memories and I just ordered the blu-ray set. Can’t wait to binge the series 😁 Awesome review filled with everything I wanted to know going into me buying this.

Seasons 1-5 have always looked pretty good on Hulu. Not to the point where I could see pores on skin though, but...What a beautiful box set! I need this in my life right now!

Great video! I would add the Animated Superman series as a great modern version of Superman. It's coming out soon on blu-ray and it's my favorite.
I’m going to have to get this set this was one of my favorite shows all though I never watched the last session I didn’t want it to end so I keep putting it off lol but I think this would be a great way to rewatch the series and finally finish it off
I recently watched the first season of Superman and Lois, which then put me on a huge Superman kick. I then watched all the Cavillverse movies, and finished it off with a Smallville rewatch for the first time in four years. Smallville still holds up well and is really worth the watch. I have all 10 seasons on DVD, and I don't know if I could justify 150 dollars for Blu-rays. Especially considering I watched Smallville this time on Prime.

LOIS & CLARK: The New Adventures of Superman was my favorite, it was a little more ‘Campy’ but I grew to like Superman through this show, seeing K. Callan & Eddie Jones as Ma and Pa Kent and how they interacted with their Super Son made me realize WHY Superman was just a big blue boyscout, they were so salt of the earth and really tried to help Clark understand who he is and what he can be without preaching but letting Clark tell them how he feels and letting him know that Earth humans have the same thoughts and feelings and allowing him to find his own way. One of the best lines in the show is when Lois asked: “ So, who are you?, Clark Kent?, or Superman?” And he replied “Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I can do”. It really showed what kind of person he was. And it was actually the opposite of Bruce Wayne who is Batman at heart and Wayne is just a disguise to function in society.
I loved Lois and Clark too! I didn't consider it for a modern Superman show (it's almost 30 years old!), but I suppose it is. I watched it religiously and proudly own all four seasons on DVD. The budgetary limitations at the time ensured that we got more Clark than Superman, but that was probably a strength, in retrospect.
Cereal At Midnight I have the series on dvd but was trying to see if i should get it because i also grew up with the show and love the series i can't say how many times I've watched Smallville but after i finished the series i would see if there is anything else on to watch so then i would go back and rewatch it. Anyways thanks for the review im curious about the extended pilot and i will definitely be getting the complete series on blu ray thanks to your video
I’m hoping to pick up Smallville blu-ray it has the best soundtracks Lifehouse, The Calling, Weezer, Staind, Bush, Snow Patrol plus it’s a classic series that will never get old.

I will probably be getting it tomorrow i got the first season of superman&lois blu-ray today and i put the digital code in but fir some reason the code somewhat went through but the show is not popping up for streaming not sure why i cant reput the code in it says already used but i dont see my digital copy on my account is it not on there cause its not tuesday yet did your digital code work for superman and lois.

Technically, only Season 1 was shot in SD, due to the tech issues of the time. But from Season 2 onward, they shot with HD cameras - its just that the airings were still done in SD because most TV stations hadn't shifted to HD yet. HDTV sets had existed since 1998, but the FCC didn't mandate U.S. digital signals until 2009. "Smallville" finished its run just two years later, and the total switch was completed in 2014.
I need to get this. I bought seasons 1 and 2 from Target. It was "new" too yet both discs were scratched. I got my money back yet can't watch it due to it skipping.
Hi, really enjoyed your review. Was hoping if you could tell me if the menu animations for season 5-10 have been updated for this release? Season 1-4 had an animated menu but after that it for 5-10 was just a static still image for the menu. I heard it was updated and was hoping you could confirm? Thank you!!
I own the digital seasons and the DVD box set so I’m wondering is watching the digital episodes the same visually as watching the Blu Ray discs?

I bought the entire series on Amazon HD video years ago. So I’m wondering what the difference is for blu ray vs HD?
The first 6 or 7 seasons were shot on film, the last few seasons the production switched to shooting digital video, all of it can be remastered to ultra HD, film can be upscaled if the original negative print is still around. So seasons 1 - 5, although they were released on DVD, they are now re-edited using the original negative prints to look they way the should’ve always looked
The problem with those early seasons is the special effects being rendered and mastered in 480p. They'd have to be redone, and that likely won't ever happen. I won't be holding my breath for an ultra HD release either, but if such a release ever comes out, I'll support it. As it stands now, I suspect this is the final stop for Smallville on home media.
Are the episodes wide-screen? or are they with the screen closed?
I'm a Smallville fan too! Smallville Season 5+6 got a Hd-dvd release a good while back. I wonder how season 5 on the hd-dvd would compare to the bluray season 5?

Yes, visually, there’s a noticeable bump in quality. They also re-encoded seasons 6-10, and those look better too.
Was it because of space limitations in the packaging that Warner Bros. didn't list every single bonus in the packaging of this Smallville Blu (notwithstanding, as you said, that many of those unlisted bonuses are apparently on this Blu)?
I pre ordered mine on Amazon. Sasly I won't be receiving it until November 30th. But I'm hyped though
12:25 Your forgetting Lois and Clark and the new adventures of superman. It might be out of date not being early 90s, but it was a weekly live action Superman show.
The only things that bother me about this set are the fact that there is no episode guides contained inside, or a complete guide as was in the Supernatural set. The fact that the episodes either inside the case or on the discs themselves, what shows are on each disc. I hope I will be very happy with this set, because I recently played some of my DVD sets to find out that the discs skip a lot!!!!!

15-16 bucks per season (about 18 hours of entertainment per season) seems like a great deal to me. WAAAAAY cheaper than what I paid for each season back in the day.

Question: Do the early season blu rays identical to the streaming quality?
I haven’t streamed the series, but my understanding is that the HD transfers on streaming are the same upscales on this set.
I pre-ordered through Amazon but the estimated delivery is December 6th, are there supply chain issues on this release?
I think there are supply chain issues for EVERYTHING right now. I've got pre-orders for items that should have shipped already, but there isn't even an update for them. However, as it turns out, there was also a disc error that impacted this set with lots of people getting two of disc 25, so it's possible the set has been halted until the issue can be sorted out. It didn't affect my copy, thankfully, but it's a widespread issue.

I love the series. I own it all on iTunes and have been rewatching it on there. I bought it on iTunes last year for like, $50 and I'm so glad I bought it. And my parents are getting this box set for me on Christmas and I can't wait to have it. Cuz I will then rewatch it again lol on Blu Ray. Superman isn't my favorite superhero (Batman is) but this is definitely honestly, in my opinion, one of the best superhero shows made. Before I owned it on digital, I saw bits of it on UA-cam and thought it looked alright. But then when I saw it on sale on iTunes, figured, what the hell? I think it'd be cool if you did a ranking of the seasons, worst to best.
I also bought the Aquaman pilot on iTunes for like, $2 and that wasn't bad. I wish that kinda actually got made but I'm also glad it didn't cuz then we wouldn't have had Justin Hartley as Green Arrow. Cuz the Aquaman pilot came out before he did Green Arrow on Smallville.

Are you selling your DVDs? I recently just picked up a blu ray set after they were back in stock and being a huge fan of course, I had all 10 seasons on DVD. Still debating if it's worth selling to save space and get some money back from the blu ray set.
I am selling them, yes. They're actually on eBay right now. I'm seriously out of space, so anything I'm not getting use out of and that I won't be enjoying in the future has got to go.
How do the menus look? Do they look like the menus from all the latest WB menus with the weird ugly icons or is it the same as the dvd menus?
It's the new WB style menus. No music, no animation, static screen with a pic of that season's art with buttons for play, episodes, audio, subtitles, and special features. This may be a unconventional take, but I like the new menus way more than the old animated menus. You get right to it and they're clean, no popups or moving images. I can be watching an episode within just a few seconds now.
I've never watched Smallvile but I am interested, I hope the entire series will be on HBO Max soon
They're on Hulu, and your local library probably has the discs.
Hey are you missing disc 26 from season 7 unfortunately mine came with 2 discs of 25 also who do I report to and go about getting a disc replacement?
I’m not missing any discs, and I hate to hear that you are. Someone else just posted a similar comment. If and when I hear something about how to fix it, I’ll post here. You could also ask for a replacement from whoever you ordered it through.
@@CerealAtMidnight a few people who purchased their copies from Walmart & Best Buy have reported they also received double 25 discs & are missing the 26th one. Seems to be a widespread issue so i hope Warner offer some sort of correction program where they'd send you a replacement of disc 26 upon receiving proof of purchase. That being said i wonder how this would work for international buyers who imported the set😬

Are you able to check how many episodes are on each disc for Season 7 as it's a shortened 20 episodes i'm assuming it's 5 episodes per disc?
Just double checked and that is correct: season 7 has five episodes per disc.

I really wanted it on my shelf, but I thought it came out the same week as the Superman Animated set. The Smallville set sold out fast.
It's not sold out permanently, thankfully, it's just a mix of supply chain issues and a packaging error that had a bunch of people getting two copies of disc 25. If you order, you'll get it when it comes back in stock online.
Ok I’m trying to calculate this.. if each disc has 5 episodes and there’s 40 discs that adds up to 200 episodes, but there was 217 episodes in the series, 216 if you don’t count the unaired pilot. Did they combine some of the episodes for the blu-ray?
Most of the discs have 6 episodes with the last disc of the season having 4 or 5 depending on the episode count for instance S2 was 23 episodes so it had 5 episodes on the last disc. S7 is a shortened 20 episode season so that has 5 episodes per disc for all of them👍
Thats a huge set…I just hope the discs don’t get dislodged in the cases. Thats always a risk of buying these things on physical format.
I know seasons 6 - 10 were already released on blu ray. But I am interested in the earlier seasons. How is the blu ray transfer of the early seasons. Are they worth buying the blu ray set for them or should I stick to the DVD versions & just buy seasons 6 -10 on blu ray ?

@@CerealAtMidnight I am more concerned about the amount of grain in the early seasons. I've purchased other blu ray of early seasons of tv shows and although the blu ray transfer makes the picture brighter and detail more visible, it also highlights the grain as well. So the grain is much more visible. So I end up pleased somewhat & disappointed somewhat. Is this the same for early seasons of Smallville ? Does the grain significantly distract the viewer to a significant extent or is amount of grain minimal ?
I think it's minimal, but you're talking to someone who loves film grain, so your mileage may vary.
I'm all about supporting the actors and crew that put the show together, but why not just order the series on Amazon for a digital library. Is there a quality difference between Blu ray and what already available as a digital copy on Amazon?

Any thoughts on the abominable Buffy ‘HD’ remaster?
I haven't personally seen the Buffy HD remaster (we own all the DVDs), but I hear it's horrible. When we tried to do a side by side comparison between our DVDs and Buffy on Hulu, we discovered it's standard definition, properly framed in its original aspect ratio of 4:3. They must have reverted back to the original after the backlash. I'm all for giving it an HD scan as long as they don't reframe it. There's nothing wrong with HD content in its original aspect ratio, even if it doesn't please every fans. My loyalty is always to the original framing. I'm now thinking of Seinfeld on Netflix and how it's been cropped, which has left so many fans upset.
Can someone please tell me how to contact WB for what the telephone number is? Because my digital copy is missing and I looked in the first season case like what was said in this video and it’s not in there and this totally pisses me off because I was looking forward to having all of the seasons in my digital movies! I received this as a birthday gift and the person who gave it to me passed away so I can’t return it for another set!

I don't know if it has been mentioned already but in Canada we get the same exact boxed set but WITHOUT the digital code. I was pretty surprised by that since we used to always get them. The same with the Superman Animated complete series set: no digital code. BTW, love your reviews and I think it would be so awesome to watch these shows with you :)

I noticed on the back of the box for digital code redemption you must reside in The US. I’m guessing this comes done to some financial situation or licensing issue.
Not necessarily true about the compression about 2 blurays they have 50-100+GB discs now would also cut down the cost due to using less discs
100 GB Blu-ray is primarily a 4K UHD disc medium, and authoring those discs requires a lot of careful planning so that they can be read on a wide array of players. Nevertheless, too many studios try to cram too many episodes onto compressed 25 GB (and sometimes even 50 GB) Blu-rays, resulting in unnecessary compression. Thankfully, that isn't the case here.
Does anyone know if each season menus are the same as the ones in the dvd´s?
They're not the same as the DVDs. There is no animation, and each menu features a static shot of the key art from that season.

What’s the difference between blu ray and just regular dvd ? Is it just not as HD as blu Ray
Blu-ray is 6 times sharper than DVD and the discs have a much higher storage capacity.
