    Great content Harry. I am running 18:59 5k and this is with no mileage prep at all. I saw your other video about doing 1k repeats hopefully with hard work I can start shaving time from my 18:59 5k!

      Thanks for the support! Wow fantastic time without any mileage, do you do any training at all? I'm sure with some hard work you can blow your PR into pieces. Excited to see how you get on. Let me know WHEN you dip under 18. Remember to stay consistent, but listen to your body and rest up when you need to! Happy running :-)

    Great video
    Just want to add, foods high in chlorophyll increase your oxygen carrying capacity; greens such as Kale and Chard. Also, vegan sources of protein and carbs reduce inflammation compared to animal based foods. The fruit thing makes sense, very cool.

      Great addition to the discussion Thomas!

      chlorophyll is what plants use to turn co2 and sunlight into sugars, and oxygen is a byproduct of that process (photosynthesis) also plants still respire (using o2 and sugars to make useable energy) but I don't think chlorophyl is part of that process. I could be wrong but i'm not sure if chlorophyll increases oxygen carrying capacity. anything to do with increasing haemogloblin would do that im guessing.

    So, my 5k PR is 16:06, off of 45-50 mpw. What was your mpw when you ran in 15, and for when you also ran 14 minutes? Also, what was your pace reference for tempo runs? Would it be a good idea to run both tempo and long runs on hilly courses?
    I am very driven to run 14:50 by the end of November. Please tell me if this is realistic. Thank you.
    PS - you can private message me if you wish.

    What things should you eat before the race?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  7 років тому +3

      It depends on the race distance or time of day of the race. But I would usually recommend eating no closer than 2.5 hours before the race start, focusing on something light but carbohydrate rich to ensure you are fuelled for your race. If I was racing very early for anything 10km or less I would recommend some juice/coconut water and a couple of ripe bananas. Or a bowl of porridge/oatmeal with a chopped banana. You want to stay away from anything complicated or too many different foods that would extend the digestion process or upset the stomach. Certainly no spicy, high fat, high protein meals.

    Harry, apologies for the random placement of this question here! But....what do you recommend as a good running watch?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  8 років тому

      There's so many to choose from but Suunto and Garmin are my favourite brands. I currently use the Garmin Forerunner 920xt and have to say its the best watch I have ever used myself. Most GPS are similarly placed these days in terms of functionality, mostly just battery life and multisport functions that separate them. Just ask yourself the key questions: What do I need it for? Do I need just a running watch, or something to track cycling, swimming and running? How long battery life? etc...Hope that helps!

    • @mcconnot
      @mcconnot 8 років тому +1

      Cheers, after posting I noticed the 920xt in another of your videos. I want something purely for running but with HRM and GPS tracker built in. Your watch is suitably priced as top of the range! Any suggestions for a decent Garmin with HRM and GPS but without the bells and whistles. At my stage I'm just looking for something solid to track my running. By the way I checked my fitbit HR out in terms of the confusing HR measurements I mention to you. It seems to be working perfectly. So I think it's me! :-)

    I have heard forever to eat more fruits and vegetables to be more healthy. Then hearing Eric Berg DC talk about wheat grass and stay away from sugars even those in fruits. I quit eating fruit and starting loosing weight along with cutting back on anything with sugar. Did you know Cliff bars have sugar?

    • @dancenow1337
      @dancenow1337 5 років тому

      "Dr." Eric Berg is not actually a doctor, he's a chiropractor. Don't feel bad for falling at him, I thought he was legit when first looking into diet too.
      ua-cam.com/video/LJUre0d-ITw/v-deo.html Debunks him quite nicely. The diet "Dr". Berg recommends is likely healthier than the Standard American Diet, but what he does is mainly good marketing to make money.
      Check out "Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death" on youtube for some nutrition recommendations based on actual peer-reviewed science. Personally I managed to heal my chronic knee pain and inflammation with a plantbased wholefoods diet and can now run again.

    Hey guys I'm 15, I run 5k every Saturday at parkrun and my runs are always around the 18:30 mark. But I really want to get my time down to sub 18 any tips?

    • @HarryRunsUK
      @HarryRunsUK  7 років тому +1

      Hey Harvey great time and consistency. First off I would recommend not running park run every week, perhaps try every other and replace your park run effort with a faster paced session or fartlek style workout. Or perhaps simply an easier few days leading up to your park run effort and good pacing strategy, will see you flying under 18! You have many great running years ahead the times will come!

      Harvey Brown I took 6 min off my time buy adding a few 400s after every run, and breathing. Breathing is a game change I'm 13 and my best is 22:13 and I got it to there with breathing it's the best thing for endurance. Breathe slowly in with your nose and slowly out your mouth. A way I liked to workout my lungs is during my 5ks and 10ks id always have a conversation with the person that was a little faster. And I wouldn't let them slow down for me I'd just adjust to there pace. If you can have a conversation with someone and run it means you've controlled your breathing. :)
