True, but I will say fatness is way more accepted in the black community. When I wasn’t fat, everyone would try to feed me and say I’m not eating right, when I was. And they (my family)always encouraged me to be bigger, rather than slimmer. Now I’m not gonna speak to wether that’s good, or bad, because it can be both. But those have just been my experiences.

@@LodocihelNah, she might be from the deep south, that behavior is typical in those regions. I'm from Alabama and also have family in Mississippi. There's some embellishment though, because it's not literally everyone who acts that way, it's mostly just the women from older generations.
They'll encourage you to eat more but it usually stops short of actually shaming a person for losing weight. Some who are messy might gossip behind your back about you losing weight because you're sick or on drugs. But there's a lot less of that going on than it used to be.

As someone with a Masters in the subject, the BMI is scientifically considered irrelevant literally because it was created based on the composition of white men. So not only is the BMI a relatively inaccurate indicator of obesity for minorities, it’s inaccurate for women also.

Honestly as a white guy, I don't even think it applies to us. Back in high school I was 5'7", 160-168 lbs and ripped. the reason I think they lump uses this whole black thing, is basically to discredit the beauty of thick Black woman, again, I already prove, why Black man is the original man who loved all three body "slim thick, thick thick, and skinny" but more over we celebrate thickness as a primary part of our culture, no matter where you go, its a fashion, I'm a Jamaican citizen, and everyday, is ass day, on the road, ass, you in a shop, ass, you at work, ASS, its a common trait, and of course by ass I mean thick, some real thick, other slim thick, others skinny with the ass-thang, thanging, what do they have in common, they can lump them in with this whole narrative of overweight, you see, while I do agree somewhat, I also can say, we all observing our race of women - black women from a European standard, somethings you call fat, in reality isn't actually fat, just thick, actually fat is belly flabbing all over the place, and looking like them, white with a rectangular shape, its no different from white people version of thick and black people version of thick, while the white narrative can fit into the black version, the black version has a higher expectation of thick, we talking thick to the point her spine make her into a chicken.

As a black woman that is lucky like yourself, to have the fat in all the right places. It's the high percentage of fat compared to muscle, water, bone, age, and height that is the problem. We are lucky it "looks good" but don't get it wrong we are still overweight or obese, where it falls is lucky genetics😅
*I'm not going by BMI by the way(body fat %), also I know on average as blacks we hold a small percentage more muscle and bone but we're not monsters compared to white people. On average white and black women were similar in weight being 120-130s lbs in the 40s, 50s etc. 🤫

I have written college papers about how the BMI chart is EXTREMELY SKEWED and damn near a big ass shot to self esteem….I say this because when I was a young child(I was a pretty thick and stocky young kid) I would always get depressed and think that I was “obese” every-time I visited the doctors office when they would say that I am “overweight”….BUT the bullshit comes in when you find out that they base being “obese” or “overweight” from the perspective of a white man/woman’s body!! I was never obese as a kid,I just had an ENTIRELY different body composition being a black kid. Black people have scientifically been proven to have different and heavier bone densities, muscle weight, curves, etc…Our bodies are not MEANT to be measured by the standard of White Americans because we’re genetically different. Not only that but the BMI chart doesn’t measure “actual fat content” and “muscle content”….and “bone density”..TWO people can be 250 pounds…BUT one can have 250 pounds of fat while another can have 250 ponds or muscle…The BMI chart is not able to rank your health….which makes it skewed and irrelevant. MOST if not all black individuals have wider bodies, stronger bones, curves, larger muscles masses, etc. We’ve been born and blessed to have curves, strong bones, muscular bodies, high body endurance, etc. AND even skinny black people naturally have muscle composition that is ENTIRELY different from White Americans…and it pisses me off how people try to write many of us off as “overweight” or “obese” when many of us TRULY aren’t!

I understood her point how ever she, like alot of radical black intellectuals, have a hard to explaining themselves because of lazy analysis.I think the biggest reason ppl combine fatness with anti-blackness is because black ppl are more prone to diabetes, the statistics show that black ppl struggle with diabetes, obesity, and are less likely to know in addition to the terrible history black ppl have with medical institution. Metaphoriccity also plays into why black ppl are often associated with anti-fatness--its the sociopolitical representation as well. How many of our aunts and uncles are fat and sometimes even fat-darkskin. So there is a correlation, but it hink the meaning of associating anti-fatness to blackness has changed over the years. There is a long pipeline of black bodies being dehumanized for their fat bodies. When slaves were first discovered and brought to the Americas Christopher Columbus said that the black body was grotesque because of the extra meat and the big bodies. One of the most notable black ppl that coms to mind is sara baartman, a black woman that, when while ppl first discovered, opted to do experiments on and was amazed at her fat body--among many reason because they did not understand how someone could be so fat yet well build and relatively healthy. It has always been a huge question about how fatness relates to anti-blackness specifically in the scope of the mammy trope, the "thick" trope, etc. i just think semantics is what ruins so many ppl's analysis on this. Cornel west said it best - that black intellectuals these days could not compete with those before. Id also like to add that the demarcation between obese and fatness has blurred over the years for a number of reasons but i think not being hyperbolic when analyzing is very useful in this case; yes obese ppl exist and some of them will try to lump in with the natural fat ppl. But i think one of the most beautiful things about critical analysis is that nuance exists within all of it. You cannot have a discussion without nuance, and youtube, twitter, and random ppl on tiktok just do not provide that.

Same here all my child hood i was called fat or "risk of obese" from my doctor. Now as an adult my doctor during my physical was like "oh your not fat at all....your chart sais 200lbs but you have thick legs and upper body do you work out or run? Idk why these old charts still work in todays medical views. They need to be updated cus some people may leave thinking they really are in the wrong." All my teen years i had issues with my body cus i was seen by doctors as "risk of obese" I stay fit now because of it.

There's a difference between all body shapes, no one is attracted to someone who clearly doesn't take care of themselves type of fat, it is a natural instinct. And there's the shapely Woman or bulky man (that's not fat, she has curves that people pay a lot of money for). I don't go as far as hating on "fat people" that's just insane.

Me; a skinny, flat, plank shaped black girl watching this very annoyed by this weird idea. Many times, people have told me some weird shit about my race should dictate weight. I'm half African, and all my African side of my family is skinny and tall. My black American side varies in size... Hmm, it's like weight isn't based on what race you are.
Maybe people should realize Americans, regardless of race, have high obesity. Even then correlation isn't causation.

I do think Dee in right though. I feel like a plank next to all my friends. I'm 100lb 5'6" and never able to keep on weight, but everyone says all that little fat goes straight to my ass and hips 1st bc the rest of my is just bones lol.

Fatness has nothing to do with being black. I don’t know what kind of brain some people have…. Black peoples even in Africa trying to feed you means they want you to not be hungry. Currently and historically as a result of lack of food And poverty… that is the reason people try to give you food… THEY DO NOT TRY TO GIVE YOU FOOD SO YOU BECOME FAT. That is NOT the goal… there are other cultures out there that like to feed their guest, for example Asian cultures do the same thing. But they don’t become fat themselves because their genetics and type of food they eat don’t accelerate it. But the goal is not so the other person becomes fat. Being fat is unhealthy.. high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and hypertension are the number one cause of death in black people especially black women. These are medical facts. Do not listen to any person that tries to link every thing as an oppression relation. It is simply not logical. Not everything is tied with with racism. This intersectionality business doesn’t involve everything. Maintain a healthy lifestyle of balance in food and exercise at least 2 times a week for one hour each. You will be fine.

So she's culturally appropriating black people by her logic...how we own blackness...
The only associations that should be made would be whether a community is richer or more on the poor side and the effect that has on what businesses are built there. That has nothing to do with the race of the people there, it's what's available in the area. It's been like that for years. Cheaper food like McDonald's or Bojangles is more likely to be placed in a community where they feel their business will make a lot of money, right? Am I wrong?? Same with Whole Foods or Harris Teeter being placed in slightly richer areas.

See this woman had a point but lost the plot 💀 Black people naturally are on the thicker side. It’s in a lot of our genetics and our culture with things like soul food. Not to mention that the whole BMI chart is weird. However, her take said all of that the wrong way 😂 Not all black people are fat and not everyone who wants to be fit or doesn’t like fatness is anti-black. Now something I have heard before that does back up her claim, is a man that made a video talking about how all black people are over 150lbs and fat that that’s why no one wants to date us. So I see where she was coming from but…..💀

This may just be me who thinks of this, but putting 'phobia' at the end of these words like fat'phobic' and homo'phobic' is useless unless you genuinely have a fear of gay or fat people. If hatred is behind these kinds of people, use 'Misia' instead of phobia.

The amount of people featured in the video not being called out is insane to me.
You can agree with them in one regard and disagree with them in others. Some of the things they were saying should have set off alarm bells to anyone who knows racism is a thing.
I don't know how someone who called out an Erica Mena did not notice what I'm referncing or think to skip past it. This was bafflling to watch as a result.

I’m classed as being overweight while having roughly 11-12% bf as a man at 5’10 and 185lbs - I wouldn’t pay attention to BMI - because basically all cruiserweight and above boxing, MMA, NFL, and rugby, etc. players would be classed as being overweight despite being world class athletes

@@Chris-zy9qh because i am not overweight. my muscle mass is slightly lower than my fat mass, i’m also a petite girl and store fat in hips and thighs. i’m currently working out with the motivation to get stronger rn, so the bf% would probably be lower in the coming weeks to months. i just think it’s crazy that i’m considered overweight in terms of bf% yk, i have a considerably small frame.

Being fat is not really a choice. I agree what everything else ya said but it's not really a choice. Diabetes and being overweight is seen more in low economic conditions and who is systemically placed in such places? Mostly black people. Thats why we see a lot of black people and mexicans with a bigger set than others because the access to fresh produce is slim to none in low economic places. Just go drivin around. You'll see more liquor stores and fast food than anything else. And it doesn't help that fresh produce and healthier foods are more expensive. This is why they are probably making this comparison however sis is definitely incorrect. Being black does not mean you're fat she is just taking the bare minimum of details and concluding a direct correlation.
