Something interesting about deleting the contact: people have weird reactions when friends and family die. When i was working at a phone company, the first thing a woman did when her husband died was call us to change the bill over to her name. He died in bed next to her, and she did this before even calling 911. Often, people react like this because its the only thing in the situation they can control. Easier to deal with a small insignificant problem like a bill or a contact in your phone, than the fact that a person you knew and cared about is dead.
@@ButterflyScarlet Of course, it is a joke. But it does need for people to know Columbo to land. I'll ruin it by explaining: in the show, when murderers are pointed some mistake they made, a lot of the time they say "people under stress do irrational things" when they have no anwer. The avobe comment reminded me of that.
When my sister passed away, the first thing I did after finding out (my dad called me) was take my meds. I was prescribed SSRIs for depression a year prior. I no longer needed them at that point and there are no immediate effects like let's say xanax. Even though SSRIs take weeks to months to display noticeable effects it gave me some comfort knowing that I finally have enough strength to take the first step to help myself. I wasn't thinking about this at the time. I wasn't thinking about anything at all. In hindsight I wanted to "ensure" that I had enough strength for when it finally hits me. We do a lot for the element of control. Uncertainty kills.
If Adam is an alternate, that means that there is a possibility that alternates can be gamers. Back in the scene with all of Adam's recent messages, a user by the name of Noah talks about going to play Left 4 Dead 2

Congratulations on such a wonderful series! Mandela has become my favourite series to watch, especially due to my anxiety it makes it quite terrifying. You're honestly killing it and I hope to see more future projects from you.
I love how Alex straight up says "I can tell you the true story of the series if you want" but the people he asks always say "nah I want to figure it out" like in adventure time when Finn is asked by a cosmic being if he wants to see the universe and see all the answers and he says no
It’s fun to guess and figure things out as we follow the breadcrumb trail. I’d be no fun if we just knew how the story goes. The twists won’t be as shocking if we know what the twists are.
@@Kkanon he's probably really proud of it and wants to share the whole story to those who actually want to know it. id probably do the same if i made a series like him lol.
Another flawless detail from Alex: Intruder says "I carried him in my arms." Instead of saying "I carried you in my arms." Also, Adam's picture looks like a vague resemblance of Intruder. A dark hoodie and a light face in the middle, with odd shadows. Literally "my sweet boy."
I like the attention to detail of asking for "5 stars" instead of a "like," which was the YT rating system at the time. That would've been a really easy detail to miss.
Yes! I loved that detail, too! I was happy he didn't miss that. It was sometime in 2010 when they did change the system lol. I had to double check on Google cause I knew it was between 2010-2012 sometime but Google says likes/dislikes were implemented in 2010.

I think the scariest part of Mandela Catalogue's universe is that Alternates are just widely accepted. Like, the world is aware of them and knows they're dangerous, but they just try to live the best they can.
Thing is, one could perceive how we live life in our universe as something unbelievable as well. Perhaps a common risk in our daily lives is widely accepted but could seem absolutely horrifying from a different perspective.
Holy crap. Older video, but i just had to share this revelation. They said that Metaphysical Awareness Disorder is much more important than everyone thinks it is, and I finally know why. Adam supposedly developed MAD after that supposed real version spoke to him at Cesar's house. But what does Metaphysical even mean? "...referring to an idea, doctrine, or posited reality outside of human sense perception" "Outside of *human* sense perception" MAD is when someone discovers they're an Alternate.
not exactly, humans have a soul, and concept of soul is metaphysical, MAD could be a disturbance of the human soul, a connection with the supernatural, Adam dont have MAD because he dont have a soul in the human sense, that why he score 0
I personally think Evelyn isnt dead, and thatcher was the hand that grabbed her and saved her life. Her being the eve to adam is so signifigant i don't think she would die like that
i find it hilarious that when Dave was confronted by an obvious evil ethereal entity he just gets confused and asks if thats the dude he was supposed to meet😂
I'm always so conflicted with stuff like the Mandela Catalogue because on one hand I absolutely love strange cryptic minimalist storytelling and world building but on the other hand I don't want to have nightmares for the rest of my life
i remember when i was young i was scared of a villain from a certain kids cartoon (i dont remember which one) and told my brother about it you know what he told me? "just imagine yourself killing them brutally" and i was like "aight" so you know...... i guess you should try doing that :l
you know, as fascinating as I find this series to be, I am not the kind of person who can handle horror that well, so there's no way I would actually watch the Mandela Catalogue. So thank you Mr. Wendigoon, for making these analysis videos, so that cowards like myself can still enjoy this work of art that Alex has created
44:17 "He also says that Jonah died peacefully, surrounded by his love ones... when in actuality, he was strangled to death by a demon on the side of the highway." I don't know why, but that sentence made me laugh so hard the first time I saw this.
The one i hate the most is the nun. It gives me such a weird dreadful and uneasy feeling and it easily burns into your mind. Me having schizophrenia definitely isnt helping, as I literally see those sometimes in my house at night 💀 The other one that's also bad for me is the one in the "detectable" section in one of the early videos, I think it was the THINK video. I believe its the last one from what i can remember, where its just a black outline with only the white parts of the eyes. Alex is too talented and I can't stop myself from watching it. The series has captured not only my attention but my fears.

@@princess_thanos fellow schizophrenic here, hi!! i can definitely relate, i’ve had several delusional episodes along the lines of “everyone around me is an alternate”. and they can last for a while and mean i’m terrified to interact with anyone, or to let the people i’ve verified the identities of out of my sight - it can get real rough at times. to be clear, it’s not the fault of the series!! just my schizophrenia being a bitch - mandela catalogue manages to get in my head more than a lot of other horror does, both in good and bad ways lol. but yeah, i can 100% relate - im so glad you’ve got a dog that helps you determine when something is a hallucination or not, that’s huge!!
I greatly respect Alex's dedication to giving so many of the characters names either directly or based on Biblical figures. I was really sure he'd never get away with adding in an "Eve" because of how obvious it would be, and so he goes with Evelyn. Respectable!
As an etymology nerd, I have to point out that the word 'angel' is derived from the Greek word 'angelos', which means... messenger! So in a way, saying that the Nurse!Alternate is a messenger is saying that she's an angel.
@@hippyhobo6285Their presence calms you down though. Also the angels that deliver messages are the Malakh which are the angels we all know, who are humans with wings. The ones that do not look like humans are the Ophanim(wheels), Cherubim(with multiple animal heads and a human one), and the Seraphim(their bodies are covered by wings and only a human face is visible). The non human looking ones are never seen by anyone who has not died as they either sing, move God's throne, or proetct areas(like the Garden of Eden)
@@aquariusdog6Saying.biblically accurate is wrong, since the angels that look human are simply the ones who deliver messages. The others are simply ignored by people for some reason

Like I've seen it happen multiple times, enough for it to be considered a pattern at least. Honestly, what a vibe
Wendigoon is Adam's character foil lmao. Adam is willing to destroy relationships and kill friends to get the truth. Wendigoon is friends w the person who has all the answers and just says nah I wanna do it
The difference comes in whether or not it is a man made puzzle made for fun. We can create our own obstacles to overcome, and we often become the architects of our own challenges. Not in a "we must make the world a shittier and thus more enriching place" challenge, but rather in a "I want to see if I can no-hit this really difficult Boss" way. A little prestige goes a long way, and simply having the answers given to you disqualifies you from the race to get it.
The fun of the chase is one of the fundamental parts of human existence. If we get all the answers without ever having to earn it, we’re left dissatisfied. It’s super silly, I love it a lot.
*Spoilers* I actually genuinely teared up learning about Adam. I cannot imagine how devastating that would be if you did not know and thought you were human and just thought there was something wrong with you but in reality, you are not human, you're some... alternative version of the original Adam. The sad thing about the Thatcher vs Alternate incident is that whether or not the police fell for the impersonation trick, they wouldn't act on it either way. The moment they identify the emergency as an alternate incident, they ain't engaging.
There was no impersonation trick. It was a real person asking for help and the info he gave was genuine. Thatcher went there because he thought it there was an actual home intruder, not an alternate. The man said "it doesn't look like any person I know." Which led to Thatcher thinking it's not an alternate. Then obviously when he went there, he realized that alternates don't necessarily have to take form of another person. If you have seen real footage / emergency calls about irl home intruders, it's genuinely creepy and the situation in the story feels like an actual home intruder even though it's a new form alternate at least for Thatcher.
Since the man describes the intruder as a "normal looking man," and he doesn't look like anybody the man knows and he is not taking anything and just stands there... Thatcher probably thought it was a criminal who is there to murder the family but currently not taking any action because the man is on the phone with the police. You need to remember that the police don't only deal with alternates and most of their work doesn't involve paranormal shit.
In Hell Demon 1: so, I possess the youngest child and use its body to terrorise the entire family for months on end. Yeah, they're never going to mentally recover from all that. I had a great time. Demon 2: fuq all that, I just strangle them at the side of the road
@@onlyonewhyphy It was probably the same Alternate worrying about the time outside of Mark's room. That Alternate quite clearly is impatient. Alternate 1: Don't worry about the time. You have loads of time. Alternate 2: Nah, I'm strangling him. That's what I'm doing.
I do love how you always talk about how horror is subjective. I have a vestibular (balance) disorder that causes optical distortions so faces like this don't scare me at all, whereas plenty of stuff that doesn't bother you is TERRIFYING for me 😂 It's a good thing we're all afraid of different stuff so we can always protect each other. Something I noticed (though I don’t know if it’s intentional) is the simple motif of Thatcher’s name and the fact that he’s the main character. If you didn’t know, there’s a human condition called the Thatcher effect that’s the phenomenon of being unable to recognize the expression of a human face while it’s upside down (look it up for examples). And in a series that’s completely jam packed with uncanny and distorted faces, this name is just an incredible level of detail if it was intentional. Keep up the good work!
You just inadvertently answered a question I had! I noticed a lot of the characters in Mandela catalogue have hebrew/biblical names (Jonah, Sarah, Adam, Evelin) and I thought I was imagining it because Thatcher doesn't fit, but I can certainly see that as possibly where Alex pulled the name from to reference the effect.
I love the idea of Alex being like "I could tell you the story if you want" and Wendigoon being like "nah I'm along for the ride", and then Alex pulling up with every breakdown Wendi makes with some popcorn just to hear how much stuff he gets wrong.
Damn I can’t wait for the next part to come out! I’d watch the actual series by myself but having Wendigoon explain it is a bit like watching it with a safe friend. Plus I live alone and uncanny valley stuff really freaks me out. Normally I’m not this much of a wimp.
he probably won’t do it for a while because the latest episodes are not really “full” the restored edition is just a remaster and catalyst is just clearing things up, he won’t make a video until vol 5
I also think it’s important to mention is that maybe the reason the alternates haven’t attacked yet is that they don’t have that many sleeper agents. In the MAD information video, it says that the suicide rate is 97%. Ignoring the fact that the informational video could just be flat out wrong, maybe the alternates literally only have 3% of their intended sleeper agents, and that’s why they haven’t made any big moves yet.
He doesn't know the whole story anyway. He keeps changing "rules" to suit. Like, suddenly people can use computers 🙄. If he had already come up with the full story he wouldn't have had to do that.
@@a5c0 where does it say people can use computers? I thought it was established that they only thought the new technology was safe when in reality it wasn’t
Evelin saying Adam said "things she wished he hadn't told her" in the context of Adam being an alternate actually sounds quite a bit like how we're told that people contact M.A.D. and it makes me wonder if she might actually be one of the 3% of people who manage to survive it. It could also explain how she reacts to getting fired, it's "all she has", AKA the one thing keeping her from fully succumbing to the effects of M.A.D.
This is an excellent theory! I do think there's more to M.A.D. than that 3% just being alternates who replaced humans, because we do have a case of someone surviving M.A.D. already - Thatcher. Maybe Evelin is going to be another candidate for that, and the two of them can team up. (I'm really hoping she survived).
@@owlthebooks I think that could be the reason that Dave sent her to Thatcher in the first place if the police station is in fact shut down. He knew she had contracted M.A.D. (although he assumed it was from watching the tape) and so he sent her to the only person he knew of that would know what to do.
The story of Adam getting replaced as a young child by a supernatural creature that looks like him and to an extent has his memories but is just kind of "wrong" is almost exactly that of a Changeling
I'm like 99% sure the "police crime" scene at 28:26 is actually Cesar's house, specifically the back hallway that "Cesar" asked Mark to get a good look at before glitching out in the call in vol 1. It's covered in police tape b/c the house is considered a crime scene as well, presumably b/c its where Cesar's body was found (either that or its just considered important by the police, as they know that Cesar's doppelganger was the perpetrator.)
My personal theory is that Alternates quite literally need you to fear them, why they torment and terrify you. I think that normal human fear of something dangerous would give them about a human level of strength, while the more horrified you are by even the idea of them the more strength they get to superhuman levels. This is why thatcher survived, he was naturally afraid, maybe even enough to empower the alternate enough that his normal bullets didn’t work, but when he confronted the Alternate at the station, he was also angry, very angry, and gave that alternate less to feed on, letting him leave with his life. This would also be why they either want you to off yourself or to be thoroughly afraid, because they know that if it’s just the fear of something dangerous, you could still overpower and maybe even kill them, and I bet a creature like this hates an even playing field
Also I think it explains why the alternate in his closet just kind of stays there. Thatcher doesn’t show any obvious fear, and so that alternate might be so weak it would literally snap like a pencil. It’s trying to elicit fear, to terrify him, but he seems pretty cold throughout, and I think that if this is the case, he might be the most powerful weapon against the alternates we have, since he shows little to no fear of them
I was thinking about this as I was watching the video also I think that’s why MAD is so important it has to deeply affect you in order for the alternates to kill you
Maybe removing Jonah from his contacts is a good / preventative thing. If Jonah were to be replaced with an Alternate, then there is a chance that the Alternate could take over his identity which includes emails and messages.
We are definitely not done seeing Evelynn due to Adams increased importance. Since she dated Adam she's a tether to his humanity. Evelynn could pull him to the good side if he's torn, she could speak to his human elements, she could be replaced by an alternate and influence Adam to aid them or anger him if he realizes she has been replaced. Tons of possibilities. Heck, the 'Shepard' could deus ex machina and save her too. I feel like however we see her next, we will not get an answer to what happens to.her in the police station for some time in order to build suspense.
For some reason, it just doesn't feel right to kill off Evelyn (Eve) when there is so much focus on the story of Adam and Eve. I think it would make more sense for the Alternates to try to kidnap Eve to manipulate Adam and drive him further towards where they want him to go. It could also be a fake-out of Thatcher grabbing her which I think would work as well. And we know that Alternates can take people's forms without killing them so Eve can still be alive and we can still have an Alternate infiltrate the BPS.
The thing is, the alternates could manipulate Adam with Evelyn by killing her. They don't have to let her live to completely transform into her. Although at the same time, since Evelyn has knowledge of the tapes and is in the society, she could be another Thatcher situation where she'd help Thatcher remake the tapes and essentially replace Dave's previous role. That way, the alternates keep her alive.
Adam not even knowing he's an alternate is heightened by the fact that when Jonah and him were driving to the demon cat house they were all talking about whether alternates were even real or not. And also since Adam was the alternate of a nun and now Adam Murry it means that alternates can take on more than one person and can sorta perform as skinwalkers.

Its beautiful how skillfully Alex ramped up the stakes and the story without me even noticing. To be fair, it’s not that crazy that Adam is an Alternate, considering his inability to feel empathy for his friend that got choke slammed on the side of the road, he pushed his friends body out of the car to drive home. He’s a little to far gone to not be one
wendigoon’s voice is so soothing so whenever I’m watching a video of him I automatically start falling asleep and then comes a snippet of the mandela catalogue that pulls me out of this state in the most disturbing way
One of my favorite subtle hints about Adams true nature during the last scene of volume 4 was The line “Do you remember my touch?” Followed by “I cradled him in my arms, my sweet boy.” The switch up from “you” to “him.” To imply that the alternate was talking about a separate individual.
Honestly, I think it would be neat if Adam ended up sort of... rebelling against the alternates. I think it'd be a bit bland if all alternates are just purely bad by their very nature, and it'd be interesting to see an alternate who adapts to humanity so well that it actually gains empathy and such and becomes good. A little bit of grey added to a very black-and-white humans-versus-aliens plotline.
It's extremely possible as Wendigoon mentioned, even though Adam wasn't human, he lived a humane life. Sure, he reacted quite weirdly to it, however that doesn't mean he didn't know what it's like to live among humans, and he seemed to really care about his mother, which out of all the relationships he had, seemed the most genuine. Of course, they could always turn it around and say that he only cared about finding out since it was about the alternates, not the mother, and seeing his senseless nature, he still has the potential to convert to being evil - But there might be other alternates that are fully convinced to fight alongside humans whether they knew they were alternates or not (as mentioned by the guy talking to Adam in Cesar's house, that there were 'others' that he could've woken up besides Adam).
This is a really weird thing to reference, but in Fairly Odd Parents, the magical fairy land is powered by people believing in fairies, and they only need the power from the crazy teacher to power it, because his belief is so strong. Maybe the reason alternates don't kill certain people is because they need some sort of energy, suffering, or belief from people to stay connected to earth, and they have to keep certain people around to give them that?
@@QuarkGamingLLC I'd love to see someone catching one, it's pretty much impossible considering what we've seen of their capabilities and since the police are taught to not engage but it would be really cool
I really like this theory. Lines up with children needing to believe in their imaginary friend for the intruder to manifest. As well as all the major religions becoming corrupted. At the very least, belief seems to be a source of power for the alternates / demons.
I have to wonder if Adam isn't just an alternate, but a hybrid. Specifically the line "My sweet baby boy" seems a lot less like a kidnapper confronting a victim and more like a father talking to a child he'd lost touch with. There's also the death of Adam's mother, which is highly unusual compared to every other instance of an alternate driving someone to suicide. Every other death has been the result of an alternate telling someone information that hurt them to the point that they killed themselves, and Adam's mother did kill herself, but from what we saw the Intruder didn't interact with her directly. It seems more in line with the alternates' MO if we assume that the Intruder was Adam's biological father, and the information that drove Adam's mother over the edge was the knowledge that she'd let a monster into her bed and her home. It also explains why Adam and the alternate he talks to looks just like him. Considering that the Intruder is very much an example of assimilation going too far, and we know not all alternates kill their victims after assimilating them, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Intruder was originally a copy of Adam's mother's husband, that just kept going after successfully finding a host for his little hybrid experiment. That might also play into the divorce that Adam's parents went through, which would be an odd and otherwise kind of useless detail. But it makes a lot more sense narratively if they'd been fighting over Adam, especially if the husband had an idea that Adam wasn't biologically his. There's also the description from Evelin, where she said Adam used to be a very nice guy before joining the paranormal society (and getting exposed directly to alternates). He at least used to be capable of human emotion, getting and keeping a girlfriend and being well-liked before it all went down. We also see slow degradation of his mind with Sarah and Jonah, he went after Sarah when she ran away and didn't let the alternates get to her, but by the time he was investigating regularly with Jonah he couldn't care less about his death. Another detail that struck me as odd was that Adam was replaced, when the police and general public refer to the other children as missing or taken, implying that they didn't get alternate duplicates. As far as we know, Adam is the only kidnapped child who was returned to his home, and didn't get buried in the missing child files we saw through Thatcher. See also that the only two police files we actually see directly are missing children reports, and Adam's parents' divorce papers. We also know that The Intruder took special interest in Adam specifically, as opposed to any other teen or young adult who got replaced with an alternate. The Intruder followed him through his whole life, being the man who comforted him through the TV, or the man who "cradled him in his arms", or who sat down with Adam in the cat house and talked to him while Jonah struggled and died outside. Seems like a lot of effort, and a lot more personal than just another minion. Maybe Adam is the real final assimilation, a human/alternate hybrid, or maybe the false Gabriel's plan involves not just replacing individual humans, but the species as a whole in the long run. If the alternates are his subordinates, it would make sense that he'd want the people he's trying to rule over to be just as obedient and loyal. Plus, if we're right and the false Gabriel is actually Satan/Lucifer, we know for a fact that he despises humans, and we've seen time and time again in this series that to this version of him, humans just dying isn't enough.
Plus it goes with the idea that he wants to usurp God. He wants to become a creator so he’s making a race that’d take over the world and sustain a population.
This could make Adam the Anti-Christ (crazy theory, no real source). Born of Man, but spawn of evil, walking amongst Man (mind you, not to understand our suffering but to further expedite it), and the “my boy” references seem a direct contrast to Christ.
@@connorwojeckowski7288 The antichrist theory might actually be another tie-in to the theme of reversal of biblical stories we've seen in the series as a whole, with God or Jesus being replaced by Satan, Adam being the one to condemn Eve, the main religious figure being called "the Shepard" rather than "The Lamb". Not a lot of evidence, but it could make sense thematically.
I’m not sure how I feel about the intruder being Adam’s literal biological dad, but it does make for a fascinating theory and a very interesting perversion of the Jesus story. Adam as a son born to a human mother, sired by this powerful supernatural entity, here to mark a new phase of the alternate takeover with huge implications for the fate of humanity.
Is there a chance that Adam is NOT an alternate? Especially with the ending dialogue of “I DECEIVED him” and the final shot of Adam’s profile on Face Studio (why would they need his records if he was indeed one of them?)
adam being on fs2 would make sense if he didnt know he was an alternate, he would’ve tried it out, also hes shown talking to someone about fs2 so he must have used it
I fully agree with what you think about the alternates being scared of the shepherd. I mean they've been in control quite literally since the beginning of time. Why wait until now to invade unless theres a multitude of reasons for it. One reason could be trying to avoid the wrath of heaven coming down, another could be that they needed the right combination of events to happen before they could fully come through. Only Alex knows......(side-note, I would totally watch the series to experience it but I'm still a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to horror....even if kinda being inspired to come up with ideas)
idk why but for some reason Adam not caring that Jonah is literally DEAD on the side of the highway and just unfriended him gives the same energy as "Im just gonna say it.... i dont care that you broke your arm"
vol 4 was so goofy, everything on the pc section felt like a parody lmao, also the alt gabriel speech at the end w the whole laugh and the death scene💀💀
@@feistysugar1175 Cause he's the one who killed him. Think about it. No alternate has killed anyone. Just forces others to do it for them. Scaring them into oblivion. Why was Jonah killed? Why was HE different? They had no reason to kill him. I firmly believe Adam killed him. Which is why it was so easy to remove him. He knew he was dead, especially with the couple times he tried to type but then played stupid to Sarah.
Adam probably removed Jonah from his contacts immediately after his passing to avoid any communication with a potential alternate (the one that could have replaced Jonah) and trying to drive him insane.
Also maybe trying to cover up that they were there together that night, seeing as he’s wanted and jonah’s alternate wandering around might raise some eyebrows
Series is scary because of how easily you can attract an alternate and there’s no hope when coming across one. I think that’s the scariest thing possible because imagine you do everything right to not attract one and you go to bed thinking everything’s chill. You leave your room door open or your closet and you see a distorted face staring at you. Like… you know it’s end game there. The scene where Thatcher went to bed and just saw the face in his closet sent chills down my back because that’s probably how it went down for a lot of victims. If there’s no technology around to give you symbols and signs of an alternate being present in your area, they immediately have the upper hand because they’ll just pop up and carry out whatever needs to be carried out. Not even a quick death, you have to face the horrifying image of an alternate, the psychological torture plus your inevitable death. Marcus death was the scariest one for me because being trapped alone in your room for days, nobody is coming for you. The population of the town is so low that there’s probably no community and it’s harder to make friends or have somebody that can watch your back or check up on you. Either way with the rules of the alternates where nothing is worth the risk..its super risky to investigate if a friend is missing and the police will probably only investigate until the end result being the death of the victim. Marcus situation was also super scary because he had to deal with the supernatural horror for days. That must be terrible to be stuck in your room with no water, food, and any type of peace. He probably couldn’t sleep that well because who the fuck can in that situation when there are mad demons outside your door with terrifying voices an, knocking at your door, and shadows creeping outside. Then the realization that the one thing he has hopes in is actually a false prophecy probably added to his insanity even more, I’m sure that information with the loss of hope sent him over. Alex is doing such a great job with building this world. It’s so interesting and the antagonists that we’re presented with are terrifying, powerful and unpredictable.
Fun fact about the alternate characters is that they have names (some have “proper” names other than the ones we know them as). - The Nun = The Preacher - The Intruder/Thief = 6 or Six - The man in the corner (black body with two white eyes) = N or The Facade
Basically, Adam can be the equivalent of a fallen angel, just the other way around. Since he is an alternate who followed the Shepherd, Adam might be something like a 'fallen demon'.
One of my big theories is that "The messenger" is show as the nun. Not the overdriven alternate. The overdriven alternate is what finally becomes Adam. So what if "The messenger" was a follower of the Shepard, who passed the word of God onto an alternate before being killed. Adam is now an alternate who subconsciously follows the word of the Shepard to "do the right thing".
I wonder if the ultimate weakness of the alternates lies within the "too much assimilation" idea. What if they develop things like sympathy and kindness? With all the biblical references I wonder if a kind of reverse Paradise Lost thing will take place where Satan's followers identify with the plight of humans and not only give up on the idea of taking over but begin to proselytize their vision of peace to other alternates. As of now there hasn't been a real vulnerability to them but there have been hints that they're not just unilaterally evil.
This would honestly be a great plot point! It would be interesting to see a possible Alternate civil war with enemy factions led by Thatcher and Gabrial, with Adam stuck in the middle of it all.
that would be such an interesting plot point! having different alternates slowly begin to realize that they can have another purpose that isn’t needlessly killing and acting like others and that they can be their own being. giving them the idea that perhaps they can be freed from their creator and forage their own path that’s separate from gabriel’s malicious plans.
that's probably why they have that metaphysical awareness thing, cause alternates like adam who replace toddlers probably commonly forget they're alternates and continue to grow as humans, that's why when analog devices appeared they could more easily remind these sleeper agents that they aren't humans and should do their intended task as we can see by the mandela counties population decreasing from the quintuple digits to nearly 1k
36:13 I love how this scare doesn’t do the typical horror movie thing where it plays a sound effect to jump scare you, it’s completely silent and that alternate is just there
I keep coming back to this video, partially because of the story, but mostly because of the MUSIC. It hits that nostalgia bone hard, and it has the mysterious, spooky, but comforting feeling I only get from watching X Files. Someone PLEASE tell me the name of this song or the artist
Personally, what I think he meant by "wake up Adam. Don't make me wake the others." Was that he has other options. The alternates need a alternate like Adam, but they don't actually need Adam specifically. There were a ton of kids abducted just like Adam. So when he said "don't make me wake the others." He's saying that if Adam doesn't wake up, he has others to wake up and do the job instead.
Yeah, but if that’s true, why wouldn’t he just wake them up anyway? If Adam if being so defiant, give up, and move on to the next guy right. I feel like Adam is still special somehow
@@legallybidoof he doesn't really seem to be defiant though. Him not caring about the people he loves and deleting their contacts after they died means that he's probably in cahoots with them now
@@SomeGuyWhoLikesGames_ why would he still put in the effort to get Adam to wake up? instead of just going "f*ck this Adam guy, I'm waking up the next one on the list instead"
@@r3uvsgaming well I think most people wouldn't accept that they are actually a demon. We don't know if Adam is the first person they have tried to wake up. For all we know they could have tried before with other people and failed. Adam could be on the right track for waking up.
Yes! I thought about this too lol. I hadn't read your comment yet and I also commented about how close some of the folklore about faeries can compare with the alternates story and then added something like "Adam is basically a changeling." I'm glad someone else is mentioning the changeling similarity, too. It's a really cool idea to pull from for a horror story because it is indeed, a super horrifying concept lol.
The Alternates kinda remind me of the parasytes of _Parasyte: The Maxim_ , both are creatures of unknown origins, both assimilate humans and both want to destroy humanity. Obviously the stories are very, VERY different, but the parallels between them are pretty big not to be noticed.
Does anybody else remember how in Overthrone the false Gabriel repeatedly said 'wake up Joseph'? At first it was something I overlooked because he is literally sleeping in the scene, but ehat if he meant 'wake up' as in 'wake up to your true identity/purpose as an alternate'? Was Joseph a sleeper cell all along??
Man, I can hear that image. Just the noise of a bunch of limbs dropping and tapping on the wooden floor. If I heard that I'd shit my pants without even seeing the thing.
I'm sure I have just overlooked someone else mentioning this but I love how he used the VHS tape that Evelyn took as an analogy for the apple of knowledge that Eve eats.

I think the alternates are my favourite interpretations of demons ive seen in a long time. Its such a unique take that its hard to imagine that they’re demons from Hell- Because they dont *feel* like demons. There’s no big horns or stupid pentagrams or upside crucifixes with them like the typical demon would have. They’re mysterious, rickety, black, gooey creatures that feel like they come from a dimension that is much worse than hell. They feel and act like an actual threat. Terrific video as usual 💙
@@BLUEBOYISLEDGE You’re missing his point. He’s saying they seem like they’re from a more realistic depiction of Hell that’s worse than the cartoony version we typically perceive as Hell. Essentially, the Mandela Catalogue displays the actual horror of Hell much better than almost any other media by straying away from common depictions and instead just making it as scary as possible.
I feel like alternates are just so incomprehensible that they don’t even have a form that can be comprehended by humans. Maybe M A D is showing them they’re true form
@@chuckn4851 bro, demons are not something physically described as they are more of a spiritual being. The traditional demon is grabbed from the catholic church which are known to be bullshit. Look at cherubims in their art, it's not accurate
Alex Kister is brilliant! Every time I'm asking questions and wondering about these things, within the story, he's a step ahead already answering them and making me ask more then answering them and still keeping that wonder and terror! Absolutely brilliant writing!
@zbvk The thing I dislike about the series is how its become more character driven. Doesn't feel right having a series based on demons overthrowing God and infiltrating humanity rely on single human characters to advance the plot.
When it showed that Adam from the Bible was the first person to become an alternate, I figured they'd have the new Adam be the first alternate to gain 'humanity'. I think what could also be a fun idea is that, if the false shepherd is still around, who's to say the first alternate he made isn't as well?
Adam being half human half demon is very cool but knowing that part of his being was a nun is super neat. It doesn’t seem like Adam really had that much connection to the church, he’s part of the paranormal society that opposes the church, so it seems like the nun part is pulling him toward it. Lastly with the implication that the Shepard will rise against the alternates it largely brings into question want part of Adam will prevail light or dark, and I think that is just so well done, good work Alex.
Can I just say that I love the contrast to the photos for Thatcher and Ruth. Thatcher's is white background with black lining, and Ruth's is black with white highlights. It's also how different the feeling from the photos are too. Thatcher looks casual as it could be a work photo of him, and Ruth's appears twisted. The smile mixed with the black and white, and the fact that there is little detail on her face, makes you feel uncomfortable in a small way. I believe this is a reference to when we saw Mark and Caesar's pictures after it was revealed that Caesar became an alternate. This shows us that Ruth is now an alternate, but as a subtle reminder from the last part of the series.
I think that in actuality MAD is not the knowledge of learning you are an alternate, but rather the calling of Gabriel, told in a way that deceives and splits the consciousness and subconsciousness of a person. Such a rapid split could drive someone to end their broken mind and pain, and kill themselves. I think what makes Adam special is that he may have been swapped with an alternate, but unlike an adult, he and other children’s MAD split the mind, and nature of their alternate selves, into the alternate hive-mind, but human moral and social nature, which fights, contrasts, and conflicts with the one-sided evil of the inhuman fiery of Gabriel.
i swear to god the alternate that Alex put at the end of Thatcher's bed scared me so bad. As soon as i saw that smiling creature i lost all sense of calm, and just got overwhelmed with just an instant flow of "fuuuuuuckking hell what is that"
With the context Adam's situation gave us now, the actual term "metaphysical awareness" disorder makes a lot more sense in the fact it means someone is becoming *aware* that they're a *metaphysical* or otherworldly entity.
One theory I have about alternates is that they're physically weaker compared to their human counterparts. Whenever the alternates are shown to attack is when the target is either broken mentally or in a position where they can't physically defend themselves. Mark was tormented until he took his own life. Ceaser probably fell victim to the alternate because he was distracted by the sound of his injures mother. And Jonah was attacked in the car, a tight place while Jonah was already in an emotional state. The alternate of officer Davis didn't kill him, but used intimidation to avoid a physical conflict. And Davis gets tormented by the other alternates so that his mental state is more unstable and he is going to put up less of a fight. From what I've seen, the alternates use intimidation, psychological warfare and ambush attacks because they're aware that they could win against their target in a physical fight. Which is also probably why they want Adam on their side. Since he is shown to not fear the alternates. So he would be a huge liability.
He's supposed to have been a 'lieutenant' but he looks like he fronts a metalcore band. To be honest, in terms of speaking roles, he's the best actor out of all them. Just couldn't dedicate himself enough to take out his piercings or change his haircut. Alex is a better writer than he is an actor.
'Your skin is not your own' may also be a Dune reference. 'My skin is not my own' is a key phrase in Children of Dune and references an incredible metamorphosis that takes someone beyond humanity. It is irreversible, and both terrible and great in many ways. And since in Dune the character that says that quote IS one of the 'Children of Dune', it means Adam is likely the intruder's ACTUAL CHILD and due a gigantic metamorphosis.
Hooooly FUCK I love the scene of Alternate Thatcher. I don't know how they did it, whether it was the actor or a visual effect, but shit those facial movements are utterly terrifying. Just the eyes and the mouth twitching and churning with everything else perfectly still is one of the most uncanny things I've ever seen. Oscar-worthy.
I was having a good laugh imagining Adam nonchalantly adjusting his seat and turning up the ac in his friends car while his buddy bleeds out on the road 😂
So something I've noticed and find intriguing about this series is that despite the obvious religious motifs that are pretty pervasive across the whole thing, the Alternates seem to derive a lot of concepts from fae folklore, at least in their older forms. Taking children and replacing them, attempting to mimic human appearances but messing up the details, having power over someone by having access to their names and faces, and just overall being malicious troublemakers and deceivers who delight in tormenting people. I have no idea if that has any actual relevance to the story, but it is interesting to consider
I apologise if this connection has already been pointed out, but regarding the Department of Temporal Phenomenon, "Temporal" has dual meaning. 1. In relation to worldly as opposed to spiritual. 2. In relation to time. A demon on the otherside of Mark's bedroom door mentioned being worried about time.

Adam's actions in regards to Jonah are hilarious in such a dark way. The way he talks to Sarah kills me, like "yeah Jonah's dead or whatever, bummer."
“yeah Jonah’s dead or whatever, bummer” kills me every time I read it lol
Something interesting about deleting the contact: people have weird reactions when friends and family die. When i was working at a phone company, the first thing a woman did when her husband died was call us to change the bill over to her name. He died in bed next to her, and she did this before even calling 911. Often, people react like this because its the only thing in the situation they can control. Easier to deal with a small insignificant problem like a bill or a contact in your phone, than the fact that a person you knew and cared about is dead.

I really like that! Because this MAD could go to both sides and how biblical accurate angels are so fucking scary.
@@aquariusdog6 they arent really scary though
@@crims0ngutz150idk man, I'd be at least uneasy if a fuckin giant wheel with eyes all over came from the heavens

Like I've seen it happen multiple times, enough for it to be considered a pattern at least. Honestly, what a vibe
Man wants to know but hates to know:
Wendigoon is Adam's character foil lmao. Adam is willing to destroy relationships and kill friends to get the truth. Wendigoon is friends w the person who has all the answers and just says nah I wanna do it
The difference comes in whether or not it is a man made puzzle made for fun.
We can create our own obstacles to overcome, and we often become the architects of our own challenges.
Not in a "we must make the world a shittier and thus more enriching place" challenge, but rather in a "I want to see if I can no-hit this really difficult Boss" way.
A little prestige goes a long way, and simply having the answers given to you disqualifies you from the race to get it.
there’s so much satisfaction in figuring it out for yourself though!!
The fun of the chase is one of the fundamental parts of human existence. If we get all the answers without ever having to earn it, we’re left dissatisfied. It’s super silly, I love it a lot.

I actually genuinely teared up learning about Adam. I cannot imagine how devastating that would be if you did not know and thought you were human and just thought there was something wrong with you but in reality, you are not human, you're some... alternative version of the original Adam. Also want answers on why the intruder was following Mark and just kind of hanging out in his house as a kid.
I'm guessing the alternate was monitoring his progress to make sure that AlterAdam wasnt messing up

The sad thing about the Thatcher vs Alternate incident is that whether or not the police fell for the impersonation trick, they wouldn't act on it either way. The moment they identify the emergency as an alternate incident, they ain't engaging.
I mean tf is a sidearm or taser gonna do against an eldritch being beyond our comprehension
@@PannierLawwe could rap battle em

I noticed a lot of the characters in Mandela catalogue have hebrew/biblical names (Jonah, Sarah, Adam, Evelin) and I thought I was imagining it because Thatcher doesn't fit, but I can certainly see that as possibly where Alex pulled the name from to reference the effect.

he probably won’t do it for a while because the latest episodes are not really “full” the restored edition is just a remaster and catalyst is just clearing things up, he won’t make a video until vol 5

Hmmm 🤔
I was thinking about that and is probably one of my favorite theories =]
Like number 1000 :)
This is a fucking awesome theory and I absolutely vibe with it
This is a great theory
Also I think it explains why the alternate in his closet just kind of stays there. Thatcher doesn’t show any obvious fear, and so that alternate might be so weak it would literally snap like a pencil. It’s trying to elicit fear, to terrify him, but he seems pretty cold throughout, and I think that if this is the case, he might be the most powerful weapon against the alternates we have, since he shows little to no fear of them
@@harrisonhamilton5284 yeah I think the Ruth alternate makes him sad instead of scared

Someone else pointed out that Alex tweeted an image of Evelyn saying she hasn't seen Thatcher in weeks, that may conclude that she is alive.
@@averageracistperson525 or..
@@averageracistperson525 that was a misinterpretation of the tweet.
Alex confirmed this.
@@xeagaort then The Catalyst is set before vol.4?

To be fair, it’s not that crazy that Adam is an Alternate, considering his inability to feel empathy for his friend that got choke slammed on the side of the road, he pushed his friends body out of the car to drive home. He’s a little to far gone to not be one
I think the funniest part of this series is that the Amish were right about technology

Don’t open your eyes even if you are absolutely sure that the man in the corner is now inches away from your face, watching.
One of my favorite subtle hints about Adams true nature during the last scene of volume 4 was The line
“Do you remember my touch?” Followed by “I cradled him in my arms, my sweet boy.”
The switch up from “you” to “him.”
To imply that the alternate was talking about a separate individual.
Nice catch!
Possibly the the real Adam as an infant--before the other Alternate takes residence in the kiddo's body
I love how devastating this series is. Like, not even your faith can save you.
Imagine some guy managing to catch an alternate and instead of it trying to escape it just does the flinstones “it’s a living” bit
I love this Fairly Odd Parents reference! Also reminds me of how devils' powers work in Chainsaw Man. Thanks for using this explanation (:
Now I'm imagining Mr. Crocker going "FAIRY GOD ALTERNATES!"
Hear me out.
I think Adam is the anti-christ

@@julinde what about Cesar’s mom?
- The Nun = The Preacher
- The Intruder/Thief = 6 or Six
- The man in the corner (black body with two white eyes) = N or The Facade
Basically, Adam can be the equivalent of a fallen angel, just the other way around. Since he is an alternate who followed the Shepherd, Adam might be something like a 'fallen demon'.
Like a risen demon?
@@Ruuehxbfiqkxn he’s not all the way, he’s like a human in a way. Fallen from heaven but above the demons, he has the possibility to fall or rise
@@placeholderdoeso essentially human?
@@gekigami1791 exactly!
It would be interesting to see a possible Alternate civil war with enemy factions led by Thatcher and Gabrial, with Adam stuck in the middle of it all.
that would be such an interesting plot point! having different alternates slowly begin to realize that they can have another purpose that isn’t needlessly killing and acting like others and that they can be their own being. giving them the idea that perhaps they can be freed from their creator and forage their own path that’s separate from gabriel’s malicious plans.
that's probably why they have that metaphysical awareness thing,
cause alternates like adam who replace toddlers probably commonly forget they're alternates and continue to grow as humans, that's why when analog devices appeared they could more easily remind these sleeper agents that they aren't humans and should do their intended task as we can see by the mandela counties population decreasing from the quintuple digits to nearly 1k
I've read something before where demons loved humans unconditionally.
That sounds like some really fucked up parental behaviour shhsd
@@r3uvsgaming well I think most people wouldn't accept that they are actually a demon. We don't know if Adam is the first person they have tried to wake up. For all we know they could have tried before with other people and failed. Adam could be on the right track for waking up.
The idea of the old myth of changeling children being converted into this modern alternate story is so cool, it sends shivers down my spine.
Yes! I thought about this too lol. I hadn't read your comment yet and I also commented about how close some of the folklore about faeries can compare with the alternates story and then added something like "Adam is basically a changeling."
I'm glad someone else is mentioning the changeling similarity, too.
Holy shit so that’s why Jesus was overthrown
The phrase "The mess of tangled limbs danced around my bedroom" is terrifying.
I was gonna comment this before I saw this :O I literally was like AGGH that’s so good omg
AND THEY'RE BOTH NAMED EVE OH MA GAAAAHD
so Dave is God? i mean Alex Kister portrays him, maybe just easter-egg and has nothing to do with lore

For the fact that most creators will focus a heavy amount on editing shorts since most viewers now are "tik tok rotted" I'm so glad the almost all of Wendigoon's videos are over an hour I'm here for it, it's something I look forward too and to be able to aimlessly play my games while listening in the background
I introduced my dad to your channel with the first episode of this and he loved it and I watched it again with him, then a lot of the videos he thought looked interest then we started watching the conspiracy theory iceberg (i had already watched it all but wanted to again with him) but sadly he suddenly passed last Wednesday, i love the videos you put out and so did he and i just wanted to share that

@@BLUEBOYISLEDGE what makes bo sense? The alternates or the typical demon shit?
@@ScurvySeamate Cool that MAD is showing them they are true form. They must be good dancers.
Alex Kister is brilliant! Every time I'm asking questions and wondering about these things, within the story, he's a step ahead already answering them and making me ask more then answering them and still keeping that wonder and terror! Absolutely brilliant writing!
Dave was so cool in the struggle for his life he put his sunglasses back on 😂
So both the Mandela Catalogue and Local58 have quite literally upgraded from Analog to Digital horror
why not, which is vetter in ur opinion?
@zbvk I'd agree, yet Mandela is still someone's labour of love and it brings many people joy. Opinions are just opinions.
@zbvk The thing I dislike about the series is how its become more character driven. Doesn't feel right having a series based on demons overthrowing God and infiltrating humanity rely on single human characters to advance the plot.
@@zbvk the statement is still objectively true. two series that fall under the spectrum of online horror stories have updated from analog to digital.
@zbvk god damn dude you're really just spamming the comments with how much you don't like Mandela Catalogue huh?
Adam's whole identity situation is literally "The legions of Hell vs the indomitable human spirit."
Real lol
DOOM plotline
I have a strong feeling that Wendigoon will have a guest appearance in future episodes of Mandela Catalogue and I can't wait to see it
it would be neat as all hell if we got an alternate modeled after the actual Wendigoon, deer skull face and all
Imagine if he ends up playing The Shepard
YESSS I NEED TO SEE THIS!! :O
I’m waiting 4 the cameo 😂😂
The shepherd: hi there sport!
Exactly, So I wasn't the only one who found it pretty interesting-looking!
alex has made so much of it on iMovie too which is just wild to me
Finally someone else noticed it. Also the intruder is in this thread and I’m scared now.
False Gabriel is the Devil
I'll legitimately start crying if Alex ends this with a 'Based on true events'
“So I was watching boomerang when I was three right”
i swear to god the alternate that Alex put at the end of Thatcher's bed scared me so bad. As soon as i saw that smiling creature i lost all sense of calm, and just got overwhelmed with just an instant flow of "fuuuuuuckking hell what is that"
I honestly can't see the face but now I feel uneasy knowing there is one on the screen

With the context Adam's situation gave us now, the actual term "metaphysical awareness" disorder makes a lot more sense in the fact it means someone is becoming *aware* that they're a *metaphysical* or otherworldly entity.
that makes sense
My friend is 30 he's been saying some "crazy stuff" end times, government, angels and demons.talking about wanting to save everyone
@@mike7870 what does that have to do with this
One theory I have about alternates is that they're physically weaker compared to their human counterparts.
Thatcher's Karen hair is the scariest thing yet.

It was made in blender but i agree it was very creepy
Wouldn't be surprised if it was used with AI. Seen AI photos and they really look like alternates haha
That's funny you say that, because the actor for Thatcher (Thorn Baker/TeenageDisaster) is also the guy who does the main 3D VFX stuff.
Everything about the scene is just so uncanny. It looks so realistic, but something is just off about the whole thing.
That theory on adam is actually really sad. You got me tearing up
I was having a good laugh imagining Adam nonchalantly adjusting his seat and turning up the ac in his friends car while his buddy bleeds out on the road 😂
I love the idea of the nun’s memories and mind being a factor in swaying Adam towards the “good side”, that’s such an interesting possibility

56:52 Oh My God, they killed Jimmy Hart! Hulkamania is gonna run wild on the Alternates when the Hulkster finds out about this, brother.

2. In relation to time.
