THANK YOU for taking the time to produce this (thanks! to your wiffy fir her patience with the stinky carb in the house : )) I just got a 2006 XT225 and the carb had a broken choke nut, the air cutoff valve plastic body was cracked, and the air cutoff valve diaphragm was installed about 20 degrees off (not seated within the cavity to the side). GREAT VID These carbs are quite different from the 1940’s - 1960’s American carbs that I’ve worked on for years. Thanks again
Thank you for your videos on the various aspects of the XT225. I just picked up a roached out 2004 model that hasn't been started in years and am starting the autopsy before trying to revive Frankenstein. Much of the rusted through gas tank has found it's way into the carb and I'm sure other places. I'm about to replace the jets and tank with a Clarke and your videos have proven most helpful to understand the nuances as compared to the old BMWs I'm used to reviving. Thank you again!
Very very helpful as mi serow has been running rich and threatening me with stalling with any attempt to correct this. We also thank wife for assisting you pass on this info. She has shown her level of understanding to be high and commendable. -paul, nyeri, Kenya.
I think your XT videos are going to make you my hero for the upcoming venture into my new to me 2002 Yamaha XT225. Just picked up this garage queen with only 210 miles on it. Flushing gas and oil and riding it. Floats were stuck seafoam cleared the issue. I understand these were under powered due to the jetting from the factory and that you can get more power out of them. Looking forward to your video. WOW just finished the video. NICE JOB!
Fantastic and easy to understand video. I wish I watched this video BEFORE I swapped out the jets on my xt225. I did not note the position of the factory jets, and when I installed new ones, I just hand tightened all of them. My bike idled fine, but puttered out fuel starved when I opened up the throttle. Now I know to go back and try different settings on the jets. Thanks!
many thanks, mister, short video with tons of info regarding how diafragm carbs are working ... in fact, I have to tune the same carb on a ttr250 that works only with the chock puller out ..... I will use this knowledge from your video, regards from Greece.
That's a fantastic vid and it's applicable to a wide range of carbies. Sure, they might all look different but the basic operating principles are the same. I've found it super helpful. Thanks for putting it up.
Just put my XT back together when I found your videos. Very nice-we must be kindred spirits. I have a ragwing, Luscombe, ride an XT225, and fly Boeings! Your Luscombe is nearly my dream machine- ragwing with D windows and wing tanks. My '38 is in restoration last 4 years😟. Maybe I'll see you at Sun N Fun
Ha I thought so, I was watching your dam updates and saw that you had a quick link to the ADV Rider site and I was wondering if you rode. Then I found this video. My wife has the 2006 XT 225 and last summer I had to spin the carb and clean out the jets from all the ethanol garbage. I have the 2006 KLX 250S dual sport. Nice to meet another fellow rider. I've really been enjoying your videos on the dam, but its nice to see that you are into other things as well. Take care and keep up the great videos. I'll have to do some more snooping around here and see what else you have. I'm up in Western Washington on the peninsula, and we have some of the best places to ride around here. dual sport bikes are the only way to go!
Juan, your videos are awesome. You've either had some training or have a natural gift for editing. This video was very helpful in getting me to better understand what the carb does and how it works. I have this bike, which I bought neglected and not in a running state. It's a learning project. I'm pretty sure leaving fuel in it over several years gummed things up. From your other videos, it looks like you are incredibly busy, but I sure would love to see a carb break down and rebuilding video. Is this still an "in the works" project? Thanks again!
pretty clear. You might want to mention that you need to increase the amount of fuel flowing through the main jet at sea level, and the higher you go an elevation, such as to Denver Colorado, which is a mile high, you need to go leaner on your main jet. Because there’s more air in the air at sea level… The higher in elevation, you go, you sometimes have to jet while doing trail riding if you climb a couple thousand feet in elevation down to leaner jets. Formula One cars because there’s less air the higher you go, when they race in Mexico City, which is over a mile high in elevation, they lose over 100 hp.
Can you do a simple instructional video on how to remove the rear and front wheel on the XT225. Much appreciated in advance. Great Job on all your videos - extremely articulate and helpful.
Thank you for the great illustration. I had no idea how or what a CV carb was until I looked into the DR200 and XT225/250. Thanks again! :) So it seems like the xt225 carbs are much better than the DR200 carbs that seem to be garbage?
Love your videos, very helpful! I really enjoy how thorough and articulate you are and that you really show things as you're doing or discussing. I have a 2007 XT225 and have done all of the Mods, plus a few, that you have except for the handle bar, I'm still using the stock bar, with heated grips. I have a Scotts Stearing Damper kit to put on as well, but with the Clark Tank, it is a bit closer to the steering column and not sure how to go about modifying and welding the required post for the damper yet. I do have a few questions: What size D606 Rear Tire do you run? How many chain Links on your drive chain, and did you have to use more links than stock to accommodate your D606 Rear tire? I put a 4.5-18 Kenda 270 (supposed to be the same size as D606 120-90-18) and it is rubbing the front of the swing arm with the stock chain as tight as I can without super over tightening the chain. Did you notice any real riding difference in the sprocket changes you did with going from 15-45 to 14-51 I think it was? If so, what differences high and low speed and do you like it still? Thank you in advance and GREAT VIDEOS!!!
The current gearing is VERY low for extreme trails (trials riding) like the Rubicon. As such top cruise is only about 50-55mph. Buy a longer chain and remove just enough links to fit so that the rear tire has some room from the swingarm. I'll check on that tire size.
Great video. When you look at the butterfly valve "disc" that the throttle cable attaches to, there is a hole in it that allows access to a screw in the carburetor body. Can you tell me what that screw does, if anything? Mine had the screw backed out so far that it was rubbing against that throttle disc?
Thanks for putting this stuff up. It help immensely. Got a 2002 stock xt225. Today I cleaned the carb and did the 3 turn mod (it was at 1.5 turns). Put it back together and it started/warmed up significantly better and quicker than before. New problem is it sputters/misses really bad at mid throttle. Totally fine at low throttle and fully open. Anything come to mind? Like the needle jet not sliding properly??? Not sure I understand the sputtering only at mid throttle. Any thoughts is much appreciated.
bobvall9731 my guess is raising the needle in the slide with a thin washer. Measure thickness of washer with a micrometer and write the number down on paper. Keep all notes. You didn't include the altitude were you live. Needle timing to throttle setting for fine tuning. Use twist grip tape markings to eliminate guess.
That's all good. But why a vacuum slide? Why not a cable actuated round slide. Why not a flat slide? What's the advantage or disadvantage of a vacuum slide. Why are they not used on two cycle engines? Didn't I see you talking about the caldoor fire.
Question: I have a 87 Suzuki DR200 with a Mikuni 42A21 pumper carb. I can't find an oem 42A21 flat slide carb that I can afford not knowing more about this bike. I see there are CV carbs that say they will work on my 87 DR200. What problems will I run into if I purchase a CV that's said to fit? Thanks for any help.
My Suzuki kept running rough even after I had thoroughly flushed the carburetor with carb cleaner. I removed the jet and looked at the hole in the jet with a bright light and a magnifying glass. Light could be seen through the hole, but the hole was partially obstructed with what looked like a honeycomb of very small solid particles. These particles were NOT soluble in carb cleaner. This bike had a good fuel filter, so where did these particles come from? I wonder if maybe the particles were aluminum oxide from corrosion within the carb. All was well after running a very fine wire through the jet. It's important to inspect the jet hole very carefully if not replacing the jet. I suppose that plugging wouldn't be a problem with the main jet since it has the needle running through it. (The carb on my bike looked spotless and the bike is well-maintained and run regularly).
Yes, these holes are TINY and need to be clear to run properly...this is why carbs are more problematic on small displacement bikes that may tend to sit for long periods of time.
hi, i have 1999 Yamaha xt225 only 260 miles on it but have a little problem it shuts off when revved up anyone knows the problem it runs but in high rpm dies I replaced carburator with a new one little better but still doing it.
i have a 96 XT225 and the plastic top peice on the air cutoff is broken off. my bike is running extremely lean. runs for a minute or 2 and the exhaust starts to glow. runs fine though. would this piece being broken off cause this?
blancolirio i ordered the parts needed to fix it but do you think this is causing my lean condition. I just bought the bike and dont know how it ran before that piece was broken.
Hi Juan.. I have problem with my carburetor.. it takes out the gasoline from the down part. It is a Mikuni. What do you think that could be the problem. Thank you.
There's an old saying, "If it ain't Honda, I ain't goin'!"...........Which means Keihin carbs, NOT Mikuni!(;>) I must say that I remember a Yamaha 250 Enduro with a Mikuni and a "get kit"in Guam in 1969/70 that was pretty fast for the time. I also remember the first Boeing 747 that I saw land at NAS Agana,(Hagatna)Guam. You would have thought that you were at St Martin if you were on the West end of the airport!(:>) Just giving you some crap, Juan..................Just remember, when flying the old Luscombe, "Speed is Life!"(;>)!.............VAP-61.......69/70.
cannot find the carb overhaul video you refer to ... need see it to learn if there you mention why my '04 carb lacks 2 features seen on yours. firstly is lack of an adjustment screw for pilot mix ... where your carb has a hole and a screw down inside that hole a ways , my carb has a brass 'plug' filling that hole and with a sub-mm hole in it. 2'd is a brass tube in this same neighborhood sticking out from the carb body on yours and not on mine. on p. 5-1 of my svc/mnl the pilot screw is item no. 14 on a list of 19 carb parts cited. along with the '14' is the letter 'C' and a different list of 3 entries : B ,C ,D says "C for USA , it is unadjustable from regulations" if u-tube allowed comments to include photos it could easily be done here. so you and other '04 225 owners could see the differences i am writing about. as right now i am unable to make the critical idle mixture adjustments

Thanks for all the great videos on the xt225. I just got the 05 myself getting ready to rebuild the carburetor and reline the tank.
Excellent job teaching. Love the visuals. cheers

Oroville kinda got in the way of that project...start here, it's about the same -from my DR 200. ua-cam.com/video/rDDRyNqdLm4/v-deo.html

So does this carburetor have a vacuum line running from the petcock to the carburetor?

Thanks Jordan, I've been meaning to do that. When the weather improves, I will. Cover chain tightening and maintenance as well.
Thanks Juan - I have used many of your tutorials - very helpful - including the ones for my CB500F. Thank you.

When's the rebuild?
Hi Juan just a question the only way to adjust the carburetor is changing the jets? can I tuning it without changing the jets? Thank you
yes, you can fiddle with the needle and idle mixture.
blancolirio
Thank you very much.

Yes this should do it. Go through the whole carb.
Hello what is the float height for that carb. cannot find service manuel where do you measure from
Luis Aragon I don't know the exact number either, just check that the floats are 'level' with the float bowl when the float needle closes.
Hi Juan.. I have problem with my carburetor.. it takes out the gasoline from the down part. It is a Mikuni. What do you think that could be the problem. Thank you.
Alfredo Acuña open her up, clean it out and take a look.

cannot find the carb overhaul video you refer to ... need see it to learn if there you mention why my '04 carb lacks 2 features seen on yours. firstly is lack of an adjustment screw for pilot mix ... where your carb has a hole and a screw down inside that hole a ways , my carb has a brass 'plug' filling that hole and with a sub-mm hole in it.
2'd is a brass tube in this same neighborhood sticking out from the carb body on yours and not on mine.
on p. 5-1 of my svc/mnl the pilot screw is item no. 14 on a list of 19 carb parts cited.
along with the '14' is the letter 'C' and a different list of 3 entries : B ,C ,D says "C for USA , it is unadjustable from regulations"
if u-tube allowed comments to include photos it could easily be done here. so you and other
'04 225 owners could see the differences i am writing about. as right now i am unable to
make the critical idle mixture adjustments
