Always a treat to come back and watch Mat ride at Tizer '87. He was going even bigger in practice at some of the venues - simply blew our minds to see him ride for the first time. Pretty much every trick you see on this video was one he invented, or one only he could do at the time. A game changer for the whole sport. I was 18 years old, and competing in Pro Flatland. Matt was 15 and stole the show! Oh for a time machine... 😉
Me and my mate went to the Stretford leisure centre to watch the this, Matt Hoffman was amazing and got the crowd roaring. I must have drank 20 cans of Tizer that day lol and got to talk to Matt, Andy Ruffell and Stuart Winder....... Awesome!!!

How times have changed nowadays these events would take place in huge stadiums with purpose built professional vert ramps with TV cameras and Red Bull decals everywhere. Not some sports centre in Carlisle with five ramps probably built for 45 quid by a guy named Frank. I don't mean that as insult to Sports centres in Carlisle or Franks but its pretty amazing to see how things have changed
Hell yeah dude. When I was 5 in '91 I got my first bike, and the term "BMX" meant absolutely nothing to me. I built my own ramps, everything, and it wasn't until I was a teenager that a real decent BMX scene came to life in my area.
wow a real nostalgia trip there for me.. I used to ride Southsea skate park ALOT and the guy who took it over was also the Skyways manager so we had a chance to use those ramps every now and then. I helped Carlos Grigg's build his halfpipe and Matt was due to come over when it was done but hit a pole on his bike a broke his leg the morning he was due to fly over to the UK.. Ahhh GOOD TIMES !!! I even rode with jamie Bestwick a few times, it' so weird to so how good they are now !
why all says tricks nowadays are easy etc etc... just thing that it is 21 years back!!!!!some of you didn't where born!!!!Matt is the legend of bmx when he was puling tricks and trying tricks like flipwhip 3 whip etc noone could even thing that it could be done so show this man the respect that deserves

GUYS come on!!!! maybe you didnt ride in 87 but in 87 Matt was king! Your comparing riders today to riders of nearly 24 yrs ago.... get a clue! bikes sucked, gear sucked, ramped sucked, there were no city skate parks, hell there were hardly any private skateparks. If you didnt afford your own ramp in your own back yard AGAINST city regulations you were just werent gonna ride. We had to incorporate REAL street riding into an occational ramp session. True Hoffman was lucky to have his own ramps.
Gotta love frame geometery back then. What is that a 70 degree head tube angle lol. That's why I rode a TrickStar...but then I had to deal with a 19" top tube lol. You didn't have the best choices back then, but it was a great time in BMX history.

Riding a Skyway TA with Tuffs!.. and to the younger generation of riders.. the trick you do today were not invented in 87, freestyle riding was only a few years old, the Potts mod and Rotor ( thats a Through the stem front cable and gyro to you ) appeared in 84-85.. that opened the door to a much wider range of moves
eddie still rides and is a hollywood stuntman, whilst andy ruffell works in the media /pr and also came up with the idea for the mobo awards. try google for 'andy ruffell' and 'eddie fiola'. andy ruffell posts a lot up on youtube so check out under 'andy ruffell' username.
Lol, jammin salmon! Old stuff is great, they used to kill themselves on the tiny old ramps learning tricks 13-14 year old kids learn so easy nowadays. Tricks are ridiculous these days.
