He wrote this at 19 for Patsy Cline. It never ceases to give me goose bumps. Dear Lord. Please keep Willie safe from harm as he is one of our Country's greatest treasures. Has his own dispensary now, in CO.
he wrote this at 19 yes.. for patsy cline no. he almost sold a few of his classics to a singer for 50 bucks when he was broke, the singer said these are hit songs, your hit songs. I won't buy them but here's the 50 bucks you need. Wasn't untilj he was in a pub drinking with patsys husband and they got to playing and singing, Willie sang a few and when he heard crazy, he said we gotta go let patsy hear this (around1am) they went back to patsys house and Willie sat in the car because he thought patsy was gonna be pissed, she wasn't they asked him in he sang it, she loved it and the rest is history ps if you like Willie and want to learn a little about him I'd recommend buying Willie nelson: it's a long story. been out a while now so it's quite cheap on ebay
@@wmcc1987 I think you're referring to Hank Cochran as "the singer" - helluva guy and helped Willie a lot when he was in Nashville. God Bless Willie and God Bless Texas.
He is one of the few whose voice has gotten drastically BETTER with age. He's quite a guy! Tipping my hat to you Willie. Keep on singing and don't ever quit!
One of the greatest, a gentleman outlaw and a humble soul. I can listen to him for days but can only handle one pass of the bowl. Remain an outlaw, Willie, outlaws like us are all that's keeping the criminals at bay! BTW, Willie wrote this song more than 60 years ago, now that's crazy!
I partied with Willie Nelson @ The Austin Oprah House when Willie Still Owned It. I Bought 2 Shots Of Quervo Frm Waitress, I'd Give Her My Empty Sho Glass & Willie Would THROW His Down!!!! When Willie Was Ready To Sing *Angel Flying To Close To The Ground* He Removed His Bandanna & Put It On My Shoulder. I Was Thrilled!!! My Husband & I Got To See Willie In Chattanooga & I Was Able To Approach The Stage (security Said Yes, after I explained) I Was Able To Give Willie *Star Of Texas Bandanna* I Watching as A Roadie Came & Grab It For Willie ♡☆♡☆♡☆♡☆♡☆
In this song Willie probably wrote the greatest heartache song of all time. It is amazing to hear how his singing voice developed over the years, you can hear it in this song. He learned phrasing, and how to move the mic around to produce subtle changes in volume.
yes I just played his original studio version & this back to back and I prefer this one. While his voice was good when he was young, it definitely got better with age. Terrific talent.
I'm just gonna say it, "Crazy" is the best sad song of all time. You can argue some others, but Crazy has got to be up there. No other song is as beautiful and as heart wrenching at the same time. Willie out did himself, but then Patsy knocked it out of the park.
Strangely he shopped it around and no one wanted it till Patsy's manger brought it to her. She had tried one of his songs before and was like no way, but the manager said Patsy do it your way! The rest is history. Like Willie's version here though.
GTA San Andreas brought me here. This is the best song of K-Rose. I used to listen to this song while driving and raining in that game. Damn, I missed that game.
I always knew it from Patsy Cline: a classic. So here I am in my old age listening to Willie for the first time, and then it's more than a really well known tune. I feel the words, and it's a song.
My band opened for the Highwaymen around Australia that year. I used to bump into Willie backstage and share a hot one with him before the shows. A true gentleman he is, too.
Without Mary Jane maybe Willie wouldn’t have had that great creative talent. Naaa, he would’ve been great but pot certainly brought him to new heights.
The video game GTA San Andreas introduced me to this song AS PERFORMED by the original songwriter Willie Nelson himself. It's also how I found out about Tom Petty. Never let anybody tell you video games are pointless.
I never knew Willie wrote this song for Patsy Cline until just a few moments ago when I watched him sing it in 1964. Willie I’d such an amazing person. I saw him 10 years ago with Bob Dylan & John Cougar Mellencamp. What a wonderful show.
I’ll never forgive my parents for not introducing me to Willie Nelson…. Watched Half Baked throughout my teen years. It was an old movie by the time I saw it for the first time, but during the “back when weed was grass “ scene, Chappelle said “you cool as shit, mister”. I wasn’t brought up in a racist household but I remember saying “I don’t smoke but I’d smoke with that white guy. He seemed cool as hell…”… years later, I find out that that “white guy” has some of the best songs I’ve heard ever in music, let alone country and I’m still ashamed of myself!!!!
Love you Willie Nelson! I saw you a few times, once was @ the First Annual Cumberland Plateau Birthday Bash for Harlan Howard in Crossville, Tennessee! I still have my ticket stubs from the concerts. Incredible artist, actor, and author, songwriter. I could add many more. Just love you! ❤
This is from the outlaws concert in 1992 in aberdeen scotland ,also on stage in other parts of the concert with willie nelson were Johnny Cash ,Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristoffersen
Patsy's voice was made for this song. But credit still goes to its author. Genius is where you find it. ...Proud to have shared with the world with the likes of him.
Saw Willie once in Safford AZ 1962 I think and once again here in Phoenix at the opening of the Mr.Lucky's,Waylon,Ray Price,Wanda Jackson, Jan Howard,J David Sloan and a lot more,July 1965, I was the baker on board. Willie comes to town this December at the Celebrity Theater aka as the Theater In The Round, tickets start at 85>00 WOW Willie you have come along way and paid off the IRS along the way. best Wishes Always.L.Hiram(Larry)Adams,Phoenix AZ
willie nelson... if you ever pass... I will cry my eyes out, and part of me will pass with you.. You made me love country music dispite my objections... everything you do is gold. God bless you,
@ksufler thanks for this upload im from ireland and willie is coming in june and i got my tickets yesterday YAY and this song has got me even more excited. ty so much
Also: I was singing this at work one day. The co worker that was there started singing along. I asked “I didn’t know you liked Willie Nelson..” She was hot based on what she said next “THATS NOT A WILLIE NELSON SONG!!! ITS PATSY CLINE”… I almost looked like a fool until I learned Nelson wrote the song… I do love this version better though!
This here is the best version of the song. I like male vocals better, especially the kind of laid back with good phrasing ones like Mr Nelson here. It brings the human nature of the voice and doesn't make it sound like an instrument.
Agreed this is the best. I'll always love Patsy's but this is my favorite. Willie's voice here suits it more than when he originally recorded it, too. He sounds better older. Also love the quality stereo sound on this recording with that steel guitar.
I was born that year and I'm 23 so I can only imagine how old willie but age isn't really important too much what's important is that "ya still got the moves" wish I could go back In time to experience it on the year I was born that'd be fucking bonkers

pikkdogs hard to say the "best " there are so many different type of genres that there is no best. But i do love this song
I honestly dislike patsy clines version. Willie did it best forsure, considering without his version, hers wouldn’t exist.
Both versions are unbelievable, and show off the artist in both singers to all of our pure enjoyment!
Blue Bayou is damned close...
Don't forget Linda's version. It's easy to dismiss covers, but if ever a song was written to match a singer, this was written for Linda.
I don't think there is any song by Willie Nelson that wouldn't be considered a greatest hit.
Such a wonderful song. And performed by Willie---- one cannot ask for more. Loved it.

I think there's only few musicians that you can actually respect. This guy is now wise and better singing than in early years of his life.
This is a cool version with multiple different instrunents well played & heard. 👍
And notice there weren’t a dozen half naked dancers, multimillion dollar set and autotune like all the ‘singers’ use today.
