WOW!!! Amazing sound 😆 You look so relaxed and it sounds so effortless. I can tell you work out those arms but you don’t use muscle for the high notes at all. It’s ALL air. What kinda fundamentals do you work on?

Thank you for the kind words! I think it’s a matter of the right muscles being activated in the correct proportions. For this my abdominals are fairly well contracted as is my embouchure, but not so contracted that it affects my throat or creates any unwanted tension elsewhere. It’s a difficult thing to balance but I think that efficiency should be one of the highest values because it will afford you ease of play, endurance, etc. I used to play with a lot of pressure and tension and it was really bad for my playing and my jaw so a few years ago I really began to focus on thinking “how can I make this feel easy?” rather than “how do I get strong enough to play this?” that one mental shift made a big difference for me. Most of the fundamentals that I get up to these days revolves around my warm up. I do an abbreviated Stamp routine starting with lip buzzing, mouthpiece buzzing and then the horn taking the warm up as low as I can, when I do this my focus is drawn to getting my chops to feel responsive and coordinated and to play with ease. Aside from that the rest of what I work on is as specific as I can get, I try my best to focus on the correction of errors. I’ve been working on the Harry James Concerto for Trumpet lately and when I focus on that most my time is spent on the areas that give me issues, I’ve found that working this way incrementally starts to fix things quickly and the rest locks in to place after a few days or weeks depending how hard the material is for you. I hope that answers your question, feel free to ask anything you’d like, I’m always fond of speaking about trumpet! What type of trumpet playing do you do?

@@jesse-tpt6959 I’m a Senior and I just play trumpet at Cedar Park High School. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of us but we’ve got a pretty strong marching band. I’m playing Hindemith Sonata for my solo this year. I can do it really well when I focus on small chunks of the music but I’m having trouble with getting through the whole thing and making it sound easy. Do you have any advice for endurance?

Nice, that’s a good challenge. For endurance I think it’s about efficiency, and consistency over time. The better you can play something the more endurance you will have so long as you pace yourself. Think of trumpet as a marathon and not a sprint, if you always use maximal effort in practice you will get good at playing that way, but it’s not sustainable for very long. Try practicing the piece at 60-70 percent effort or less until you can get through it. Practicing soft encourages good form and control. In terms of raw muscle this is where it gets tricky, or atleast it was with me, if you are tired, stop playing and come back when you feel fresh. The biggest mistake I made when I was younger was I played on tired chops constantly. Sometimes you have to grind things out for a gig, but unless you’re getting paid stop playing or play down an octave or softly until you can rest. Endurance comes from fully resting, so when you practice take rest as soon as you need it because once you’re tired it’s too late and you’ll have to wait until much later. It’s always better to heal, if you play on tired chops your chops will only get weaker. Hope that helps!

@@jesse-tpt6959 Yeah thanks for your advice. I play on tired chops a lot just because I wanna keep playing high and loud 😂 I shouldn’t but it’s fun. I have a beautiful soft sound but I only enjoy playing soft when my chops are really tired or I’m not playing what’s on a page. Have you ever played Hindemith Sonata?

I’ve never performed the Hindemith, I sight read through it once a few years ago, but I’ve never put any serious time into yet. When do you have to perform it?
