Would love to see both Alice Neel and Georgia O’Keeffe next time. One changed the rules of portraiture and the other introduced a symbolism unique to American culture. Thanks
I loved the choice but feel that the title 'contemporary' should be replace with 20th century artists? It is perhaps the problem of algorithms in defining the 'most popular' and 'most influential' where longevity inevitably advantages 20th century artists? Anyhow, thank you for the bios of the greats. Just to note, I have seen some of your other videos that show current artists ... very useful reference, indeed.
Yes, I agree. On the other hand, many of those artists who rose to prominence in the second half or fourth quarter of the 20th century are active up to this very day-some have passed away, others haven't. So they worked throughout the contemporary era. Maybe another interesting topic could be painters of the 21st century, showcasing only artists who became influential after the turn of the millennium. Nevertheless, food for thought and I share similar thoughts when it comes to the selection and methodology. Thank you for tuning in!
Frank Stella ,Jasper Johns ,Jean Michelle Basquiat !! Those are my favorites from this list. You cant deny Andy Warhol's vast influence as well. If I had to choose just one it would be Stella under rated in my opinion. His sculptures are like no other.
Can't argue with that! Yes, Stella's development has been absolutely incredible, and his sculptures are something else. Thank you for tuning in and for sharing your thoughts. Have a great day!
Interesting question to think about at the end. Algorithms trying to answer a nuanced question. Following data can miss unquantifiable ideas. Mark Bradford would be on my list of more contemporary contemporary artists.
Great video. I think a measure of just how important these artists are (or were) is the extent to which the work remains fresh, exciting and energising no matter how many times you see it or how many decades have passed since it was made. You are right however, to draw attention to the fact this selection lacks diversity and focusses on an older, male generation (but we should also avoid using these artists’ demographic to denigrate or downplay their achievements - a lamentable tendency one encounters sometimes). The fact that six out of the ten are deceased does rather call into question how we define the term ‘contemporary’. What I’d really like to see is some alternatives to what the algorithms tell us. If feasible, it would be great to see some personal lists as nominated by prominent curators.
Hi Chris, spot on as always. The fact that their recent work feels as contemporary as the younger generations work is a testament to their importance and longevity-hence being top of the list. Ellsworth Kelly is as fresh as Imi Knoebel, Andy Warhol as visually powerful as Mircea Suciu, or Ed Ruscha as witty and subtle as Christopher Wool. I like the idea of personal lists from curators, but then to have a meaningful picture, we would need a lot of curators to have a decent overview. Food for thought! Thank you for tuning in and all my best from Belgium
@@contemporaryartissue Thanks Julien. I’d be interested in seeing your own top ten! It would be interesting to see the occasional guest curator, from emerging to established. I think the range of insights and perspectives would be fascinating along national, regional, cultural and demographic lines. Greetings from Cornwall, UK!
Since the 1960s when rock music began having diverse line ups of members being people of color and women, I take my clues and include that into my search into artists. So I would add an alternate list of American artist: Helen Frankenthaler, Karkir Nelson (though not an abstract painter) Jack Whitten, Al Held, Richard Diebenkorn, Wayne Thiebaud, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning (Dutch-American), Franz Kline and Njideka Akunyili Crosby. Also my 11th Lee Krasner, and 12th Wassily Kandinsky.
Terrific recital! Great list. Rothko, de Kooning, Kline, Krasner, and Kandinsky were not eligible for this list as they are categorized as Modern artists instead of contemporary artists. Thank you for tuning in!
This was a very engaging and interesting delve into the time period... thank you. Of the 10 artists you covered, in my view Warhol and Rauschenberg stand above the rest. For two reasons. Warhol is the logical concussion to Duchamp's urinal. Rauschenberg brings everyday detritus to the level of art as everyday experience. Today's artists that try to extend this fail miserably... Cheers -Greg
It was lovely to see you list the lesser known artists at the end. Would you mind listing them off in the comments so I could look them all up? I apololgize I'm an english speaker and I had trouble understanding them all... Boo me. TIA
I would say all four-although one could argue for the case of Joan Mitchell-are Modern artists and thus excluded from this list. Thank you for tuning in!
I believe Basquiat is the best artist to come along since Van Gogh and Picasso. I think Warhol was quiet jealous of him because Warhol never created an original piece of artwork, he never had that level of talent.
Well, one very objective criterion of 'contemporary' is that the painter should be alive. I wonder how your list would turn out using all the same other objective data had you done that?
@@valerie_ellis_fine_art I am afraid recent art historiography would disagree, Modern Art ends with Abstract Expressionism (and thus Rothko), followed by post-modern art movements such as Pop Art, Post-Painterly Abstraction, Minimal Art, etc.
Yes, a question I have given great thought to before publishing this video. My personal opinion is and remains inferior to reality. We aim to be art scientific, and I will never impose my personal opinion on such a list as if it is the truth. If these are the most-exhibited, most-bought, most pertinent American painters of the contemporary era, then all I can do is present the results as they are, put them into the right context, and face the facts together. Otherwise, the research would not have any meaning, nor would we be able to have an accurate picture or be able to make any valuable conclusions if I altered this list according to my personal preferences or tick boxes so everyone is happy. I hope this answers your question, and thank you for tuning in!
Hi there, thank you for tuning in. Jackson Pollock is an Abstract Expressionist, meaning he belongs to the historical era of Modern Art, whereas in this video we are covering the historical era of contemporary art (postmodern). Have a great day!
They most definitely were/are! Please make sure to watch the assessment of this all-male selection at the end of this video for more context and 6 female painters.
I agree, but I would argue they are both Modern artists rooted in a different era, even though they have worked so closely to various artists from this list. Thank you for tuning in!
I hear your struggle but man what a big yawn. Old or dead...."today's most influential". Is there an index that fields who current contemporary artists are influenced by?
Influence is almost impossible to measure. However, pertinence always results in influence. The algorithm lists artists based on exhibitions, collections, participations in major events, et cetera, listing the most in-demand, most-exhibited, and thus most pertinent artists today. A great methodology for art scientific research. Thank you for tuning in!

This video just reminded me of why I should still keep on trying. Thanks.
Wow! The articulate descriptions were more impressive than some of the art. Bravo!
Thank you for your mos kind words, appreciate it. Have a great day!

Where are the women !!!? Shame
Why painting USA's national flag is a big art work? It is just a copy of a flag. Why such thing can be regarded as art? It is not even original.
