I'm so glad that they think about possible care for people on scene. They may be doctors or paramedics but nothing can really prepare someone for seeing something like this.
Especially, you have a totally different mind-set, when you come across such a horrific case of cardiac arrest in private with no time to prepare. The ambulance teams knew they would go to some sort of emergencies even before their shift started and had some mental time to prepare between the alert and their arrival in this specific case. Bystanders, no matter how good or if they're medically trained, get thrwon into ice-cold water, figuratively.
@@vollelektrolysierer5773 absolute agree with you, working in the ER i know when someone is coming in whos in cardiac arrest so i give myself a mental preparation. Seeing it on the spot in public would be a much different scenario because i wouldnt have all the tools to help and like you said, its like getting thrown into ice cold water
That’s why us first responders stay trained up and re-cert with really good thought provoking scenarios
@@vollelektrolysierer5773 Can confirm. I'm not medically trained but have been first on the scene of respiratory and cardiac arrests. It is like being thrown into ice-water at the time it happens, but over time it's more like having been caught in a fire; it scars you. I've definitely exhibited symptoms of PTSD. Checking in on the first responders is definitely a very, very wise move I think.
It's not a big deal and it doesn't bother most of us at all unless it's a kid.
I love, that they included the nurse and doctor and used their help even when the crew was there. They were part of the team, with the same goal, so they also were part of the talk afterwards. That's awesome.
Absolutely! It infuriates me to see helpful people getting run off by Fire and EMS once they've arrived. If someone's being unhelpful or is just in the way that's one thing, but don't run good help off for the sake of your own ego and wanting to take over the show. I've seen it many times and it's absolutely disgusting.
As a Student Paramedic we are told that having bystanders helping is highly encourage as it leaves the paramedic crew to do other important stuff like injections, defib, etc instead of just CPR and airway management. It also help reduce the fatigue of paramedics on jobs that are over a long period.
It's called being in the circle of care, irrespective of who you work for, if you are a Healthcare worker you are included in the debrief.

My boyfriend died of a cardiac arrest, in London. There was an off-duty nurse on the scene and she tried to do everything she could until the ambulance arrived. They tried to save him for more than 30 minutes, but it was over the second his heart stopped. I think of them often. How they gave everything they had to save him. He was 28... I have no idea who you are, but if you ever read this, nurse, paramedics, doctors, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my broken heart. I know you tried. And you're my heroes for ever.

In the Netherlands a few years back: a speeding driver (over 80 km in a 50 km zone) lost control and killed a grandfather, grandmother and their grand daughter. He got community service, 240 hours. But he had already fled to Poland.... So 7 years is way better. But certainly not enough!

Incredibly sad. She was only 24 years old. I’m so happy that there are helpers in this world. I don’t know if she was still lucid after being hit by the car but I can’t imagine if no one was around for her as she laid dying. 😔

I did about 10 to 15min cpr on my dad before the emergency service arrived...it felt like a lifetime that flashed past in seconds (he past away). For that doctor to do 40mins is seriously amazing. Really sad to hear the young woman past
I did the same for my dad for about half an hour before the ambulance arrived and it really tires you out. Thank god for the adrenaline rush you get in those situations because thats what keeps you going

i am a Volunteer Medic and we done CPR last month for 45 Minutes but we had 5 people (2 EMTs, 2 Paramedics, 1 Emergency Doctor) and changed positions multipal times, but still we where done after that Response...
You have my deepest sympathy for having to witness the passing of your father. As a paramedic I probably average 3-4 CPR jobs a week. We don't know the patient so there's no connection, and you're so clinically focused on the job, emotion is put aside. And I seriously commend you for doing 15 minutes of CPR.
7 years is an absolutely atrocious sentence. Our justice system is truly buggered.

I don't think you understand how long 7 years is. In 7 years you could become a doctor or you could pass your GCSE study your A levels and leave university with a law degree and you'd still have 2 years left.

My hat goes off to them for giving the patient a chance when I was a medic I worked a traumatic arrest and got Ridiculed and wrote up for “ wasting resources” on someone who “ had no chance for survival “ God bless these folks

Chris Swihart That's so rough. I've had a few saves on traumatic arrests. I hope you were able to stick it up the bosses with some clinical reasoning. If they've got some sort of cardiac output, and don't have injuries incompatible with life I can't see how they'd shoot you down.

What a tragic loss of life, utterly heartbreaking. How on earth can you only give a sentence of 7 years? Why was this never appealed for a longer sentence? If the maximum sentence is 14 years for death by dangerous driving and it was a hit and run, surely they should have been given the maximum??!?!?!?
It's because our British justice system is shit they need to grow some balls and throw the lowlife that drove away from this young lady that lost her life because of this idiot. The thing is, he will be out in 3 years' time. Just so very sad she was so young..
Circumstances. For example he may have been speeding to get his pregnant wife to hospital due to severe bleeding (speeding i'm sure would be considered dangerous). Obviously a sentence is justified but not the maximum as it was caused during a heightened emotional state. If he instead decided to drive with his feet for the fun of it then that's where sentence would be closer to 14 years.
Look at it this way, if you was speeding a little over the limit to get to something important (hospital for your child or partner for example) possibly not being as focused on the road due to your mind racing. would you want 14 years in prison if you run over someone or would you think 7 would be justified?

@@Eddygeek18 To be honest, if there was a genuine reason for speeding such as having a potentially very ill passenger then that would be more likely to incur a penalty consisting of one of the following: a suspended sentence or some sort of community service and of course that would be dependent on both the driver having no sort of driving record or criminal convictions and the judge being a lenient sort.
If the person was speeding because they were late for something than it would likely attract this sort of sentence, because they are guilty of not driving with care.
If the person was just driving badly for the hell of it, they are going to receive the upper end of the sentence and if there are other aggravating factors such as:- taking without consent; driving without insurance or a license; driver whilst under the influence; the vehicle being dangerously defective etc.......then they are likely to receive the maximum penalty that the law allows with the lesser crimes being served concurrently.
@@banana9106 If the offence is minor, you won't get a suspended sentence, most people who speed don't get reported to court either, unless it's extremely excessive. (I'm a serving police officer).
Also, you will not get community service or a fine for death by careless or dangerous driving, simply won't happen, because despite any mitigating circumstances, ultimately the guilt element is still there in respective of your driving falling below the standards of what would be expected of a careful and competent driver.

I just lost my mum very, very suddenly, burst abdominal aortic aneurysm - paramedics arrived just 2 minutes before she died. Does anyone know what that clicking sound is / from what machine when they resuscitate ? I’ve been told I have some PTSD from the night my mum died, & that clicking sound haunts me.
Hospital were awful when my Mum was taken (despite dying here, it was for confirmation of death / to stop resuscitating / that we & they were making the right decision) - but paramedics.. my god, they were in a class of their own, I won’t ever forget how amazing they were.
Not sure I should’ve watched this, truth be told, brought back a lot of memories I didn’t realise I had.
I’m sending all my love to Emma’s family & friends, as well as the paramedics & pedestrians / doctors that helped that evening. Fly high Emma, sweet dreams beautiful girl. X
Hi Laura, thats terrible. The clicking sound is from an AED. They attach nodes to the patient which detect electrical activity and when it tells you to do CPR, it gives the rhythm you need to do CPR to. This is to make sure the paramedics/medical professionals are doing CPR to the correct timing to give the patient the best possible chance of a successful resusitation.

Oh sweet I'm so sorry for your loss. I watched my mom die, she was in hospital because she wasn't making any blood cells. She had an infection and sadly died. I'm glad they didn't resuscitate, she left the earth very peaceful. I'm so sorry about your mum, please talk to someone if you have flash backs, it does help.
Hi Laura, sorry this happened to you, that noise is a metronome on the defibrillators to help us keep in time with CPR.
I am so sorry for your loss when I am at a cardiac arrest and loved ones have had to perform CPR on loved ones. I always sit them down afterwards if it's not a good outcome, and I tell them to go and see there doctor and ask them is there anyone that they can talk to about what happened and that they had to do CPR on there loved one. Not everyone can cope with it and it can affect people for years to come it really can. So maybe you should also go and talk with someone about the day you lost your mum. It can only help you out.
She was dead when they started CPR. We need to remember that no matter how hard we try we don't always get them back. It's hard to deal with, but it's reality.

Peter's right in that cardiac arrest IS NOT death, cessation of ALL cardiac activity including electric is medically classified as death since a heart with electrical activity can start beating again (return of spontaneous circulation). She was NOT dead when they started CPR as they clearly state in the video that they detected electrical activity.

Doing cpr on a person who is clearly at deaths doorstep…..it’s hard when they just don’t come back like you’ve seen it happen in the movies….it’s never something life prepares you for….I watched as my grandma flatlined and it’s just…..it’s very very sad and almost relieving when you know how much pain they were in before, they r now free….I played I’ll be seeing you by Billie Holliday as she passed away too it was her favorite song….truly something one doesn’t easily forget

The young doc knows how to channel that emotion. Some of us are really good at it and deal with that emotion in a different way.
I would love to be a volunteer firefighter but this is the stuff I can’t handle which sucks it would make me cry to do my best to save someone and it not work. This was a eye opener as to what really first responders go through and it makes me appreciate them more

Here in the UK fire fighters don't do the same as in the USA they are not EMTs they are what their name says and that is a firefighter they don't go out to medical at all that's up to the ambulance crews. They will go to car crash if needed to cut a person out of a car and if needed by the ambulance service for other things, but generally not do medical. Yes, they are trained in CPR and how to give O2 and simple stuff like that but that's as far as it goes for them here in the UK.

I have been on Red Cross 1st. responder courses and working in the construction industry around the world I see accidents, training kicks in automatically and we go through the check list. Mostly for me it was stemming blood loss from wounds until the ambulance crew arrives and take over, the slap on the back is great and meeting the person again later when they return to work is worth a beer or three. Now retired I still use my training, now it's kids falling off bikes or gardening injuries.
If you care about your family, friends, neighbors or even strangers, go sign up for the course. Get some simple medical equipment and a First Aid kit. Don't just sit there. Don't just film the event. DO SOMETHING. The life you may save could be your own.

Oof… seeing her face in the end really got to me. 24 years old… how dare anyone hit and run? How does it even come to mind not to stop?
These guys are our saviours. Come to aid 24/7 all year round a service we need to be proud of and look after-worth every penny and more…

Its always very strange to see this from a US EMS side. But honestly at that point there isn't anything a hospital can do for the patient, terminate resuscitation attempts in field. That's something general population doesn't understand: we do everything a hospital would be able to do for the patient but the difference is we are doing it on the scene. I had a family flip shit the other night pronouncing their daughter/niece but there wasn't anything else we or the hospital could have done for her, she was too far gone. That's just the grim reality of this line of work.
I agree with you to a certain extent. It is definitely frustrating with family members lashing out in grief and not understanding that their loved one is too far gone. The one point I would digress is that we can do everything that can be done in hospital in the field. While we do the same ACLS and push the same drugs for a patient in medical cardiac arrest, we as paramedics can do far less in traumatic cardiac arrests. Can we place chest tubes for a tension hemothorax, pericardiocentesis for a tamponade, or REBOA for exsanguination in the field? Heck, we can't even give blood unless we call for a bird.
@@chanman2188 Certain units have started trials with blood in field without bird necessity. May be a thing in the near future. Not to mention ER works then just the same we do, they aren't placing chest tubes until the pt is stable. If the ER determines all attempts have been made to get rosc they'll terminate too. You work in hospital by chance?
@@trauma5475 Our helicopters started carrying blood some years ago now here in the UK. And the doctor that went to this would also have blood in the car, as sometimes they can't fly or its just faster in the car pending on were it is. But there saving more and more life's with carrying blood.
I pushed blood into a RTC PT on the side of the road, his wife was killed on impact unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for her.
That is ridiculous and NOT TRUE at all. Especially trauma patients are in dire need of definite care by a hospital / operating theatre. All the blood you carry won't help, if her brain bleeds, crushing itself to porridge. And now tell me, you crack heads open in the field.
@@chanman2188 You guys can't do the procedures you've listed? That's crazy. We've been carrying blood products for about 8 years. I know some US EMS agencies only employ EMTs with limited skills, which coming from a country where we're all paramedics seems strange.

It's one thing, if it's an accident, and you stop and try to help the person you've just hit. It's another, to run away, and have absolutely no regard for the life you've just taken. 7 years is an atrocious sentence given for something so severe.
Right? In the US you might get a misdemeanor if you have an accident, but fleeing the scene makes it an automatic felony.

cardiac arrests are one of the worse jobs you can go to, i’ve only been to one which came through as a cat 2 asthma attack so unfortunately the patients daughter wasn’t performing cpr but we spent a good hour working on him to no success and there was 6 of us. Kudos to the junior doctor for being on the chest for 40 minutes i certainly couldn’t do it that long

The doctor did not do 40 min of CPR. The 40 mins was from the very beginning until they called it on scene. No one can do 40 mins of straight CPR.

The comment that the Dr was calm and collected, but almost too calm and collected, I imagine means he believes she was potentially now in shock, I can't imagine what it must of been like to be doing CPR for that long and to lose her.

As someone who's 29 with serious cardiac problems at a high risk of cardiac arrest at anytime, and a 4 and 1 year old son and daughter, and my lovely wife, I implore everyone to learn to do CPR as you never know if a relative, friend or stranger in public may need you. You could be the difference between me dying or me being able to continue to live and see my children grow up all because you knew how to correctly do CPR. If you can't attend a course, at bare minimum watch some videos on UA-cam or Google some guides.
It really isn't difficult and ALWAYS remember, even if you don't think you can do it properly, ANY form of CPR however effective you are doing it, is better than doing nothing. They will be dead if you do nothing, you cannot make it worse. Also remember if you break the patients ribs when doing CPR, you are doing it right. It feels horrible but again, broken ribs is nothing when they are already clinically dead. Worrying about breaking a rib and piercing something? Again, they are dead regardless. You cannot make the situation any worse. DO SOMETHING. You don't need to perform mouth to mouth either, so don't worry about that if you aren't comfortable in doing so. Just focus on circulating the blood around until crews arrive.
Also read up on how to use a defibrillator. They are very straightforward and the machine will lay it out in the simplest of terms to understand how to use it, but if you know prior to this you can save precious seconds by getting the machine going and pads on in the right spot. Again, YOU CANNOT MAKE THE SITUATION ANY WORSE. They are dead if you do nothing.

The fact our frontline hero's in the nhs have little debriefs and follow ups shows they are in it for us. They get no reward, they get no recognition but yet they do it anyways. Its a stark reminder that one second and then your gone and everything around you is in a lifetime of pain because of a cowardly stranger you've never known stubbles into your path.
No reward? For doing their job that they chose for themselves to do and are also paid to do? You think they should get a little trophy after every job or something?

Most people don't realise how exhausting performing CPR is. Do it for 5 minutes and see how you feel and how much you're sweating. No matter how fit you are, the adrenaline and physical demand it takes if you're doing it properly is exhausting. Thankfully usually the adrenaline will suddenly make you much more fitter than you are and allow you to perform CPR for longer, on top of you knowing how important it is. Try and do something else as physical but not as important and I doubt you'd manage it as well.
It's also part of the reason paramedics do not run when pulling up. On top of not wanting to injure themselves (carrying heavy equipment) and thus reducing their capabilities to perform CPR or their job, they do not want to use up any energy prior to potentially needing to perform CPR. Paramedics will move quick and swiftly though.
The only time paramedics will often run or move the fastest after arriving on scene no matter what is if they know its a baby or child who's unconscious and not breathing.

I think you forget he's probably out already and has been for some time... it's a 7 year sentence. In the vast majority of cases you serve 50% in prison and the remaining 50% on release license. If you commit further offences whilst on license you can be "recalled" to prison to finish your original sentence and they may impose further time later down the line if you're found guilty of the new offence(s).
Let's suppose he was convicted in mid 2019 at court, he'd have likely been released at the start of 2023.
