The other advantage of having a restaurant-style ice maker is that it makes ice which has a slick surface area, just at the melting point. The slick ice surface keeps the carbonation from escaping quickly. Most home ice makers (including refrigerators) make ice that's too cold and has microscopically rough surfaces, which is why your soft drinks release carbonation very quickly when you pour them over ice.
Is there a minimum usage requirement to avoid the syrup gumming up the lines and/or getting stale? Or is there a weekly/monthly maintenance routine/flushing to keep it all working well? I've thought about getting one myself but have stayed away at the perceived, on my part, potential maintenance requirement(s).
allesichmache the syrup lines wouldn’t gum up unless you let it sit to the point where the syrup expires. The only maintenance you really have to do is clean the nozzles once a week
I always wanted one of these in my house back 20 years ago when I was drinking 6 cans of coke a day. Now I drink 0-1 can of soda a day. I would be 300 lbs if I had this. I was doing the electrical for a new burger joint in Boston years back and the coke machine was just installed that day with all new lines and filters. The owner said drink all you want. For those two weeks, I was drinking about 6 - 24oz cups a day. It was ssssooooo good. Ice cold and as fresh as I can be.
This is truly inspirational and I would love to see an update nine years later in 2019 I am definitely thinking about doing one of these for me and my family as all five of us drink Dr Pepper on a regular basis and we’ve been having to buy a lot of Dr Pepper cans which makes a lot of trash so were thinking about making a soda fountain in our home with dishwasher safe cups instead of aluminum cans got to a save the mother earth
Yes. This does save a TON of money. (after the initial cost of the machine and co2) A bag of Dr. Pepper syrup is $90 and it will last a family of 4 or 5 like 6 months to 1 year. The machine itself can be bought used for $500 or new for $1200. After the initial investment on the machine you are just saving tons of money. $90 a year for soda if you have a machine. (Most families buy two 12 packs a week. that's $14 a week. That's $700 a year on soda.) Factor in the cost of Co2, (which you can buy a used co2 100lb tank for like $200) the cost of refilling it is around $20. A 100lb tank of co2 will make thousands of cups of soda. The yearly running cost is $90. The total cost for the machine and co2 is like $1000 to $2500. So you will spend a lot of money at first, but the long term money saving is worth the investment. In fact if you get just a 100lb tank of co2 and 2 boxes of syrup it will last you for over a year or 2. Yea it does suck having to take the tank to be refilled and waiting on the syrup to ship, but its a small price to pay for having such a cool machine at home and the ease of use.
Not to mention that fountain pop is way cheaper than buying in bottles. When I worked at McDonald's they said a medium fountain drink cost $0.10 and yet they sell it for $1.00 in the summer and even more in the winter.
wow finally someone who is smart. People usually think sugar is the main cause of it. smh. it has to do with insulin not being absorbed in the body properly.
@@BobRooney290 does not. type 2 stems from fat clogging the system up not allowing insulin/sugar to even eachother out. which is why you can get rid of it through a healthy diet and exercise .
Not only the cost of the BIBs (bags in a box), you would have to be drinking a lot of pop to use up the 20L syrup before they expire. Then you have to buy the co2.
Mike Wayne depends on the soda now, maybe things changed ig, but I saw a user on reddit talking about owning a soda machine and said the boxes cost around 60 dollars, some are more expensive though - the upper end is between 100 and 200, and some are a bit cheaper. Have no idea how much the air tank would cost or the electric lol, this is a really interesting thing though.
Hell yeah. I've always dreamed of having a basement "man cave" with a bar and my own soda fountain. I'd have tons of booze too, even though I don't drink alcohol. I'd definitely get some mileage out of the soda fountain. And it's just damned cool!
This is a dream for most people, I love my soda even though its terrible for me, I still would love this! I work at Sam's Club and we sell many flavors of the bag in the box drinks. Most of the local businesses buy from us. (For those that are asking where to buy.)

nuclearpeacex YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WEIGHT YOU WILL GAIN!? AN HOW MUCH MORE HIGHER RISK OF CANCER YOU WILL HAVE!? That is cool to have if you have a walk up bodega.
Way cheaper to have a fountain. The soda is always fresh, and you never have to take back recycling. Cost of making soda like this is pennies on the gallon.
@@rudypintado4267 6 months easily up to a year refrigerated. Used to be a lot longer. I guess I've been out of the food service industry too long but I recall the syrup being good for about 4 years. I guess things have changed.

What is the initial set up cost and then the cost per liter for the syrup and CO2? Like, how much soda would you have to drink before you were saving money? (Though medical cost from diabetes and tooth decay could add up)
Similar idea, but I have a Dr. Pepper vending machine in my garage, I've always been fond of collecting things that you don't normally see in people's homes. Same with arcade cabinets, slot machines, etc.
That would be pretty cool if you had a lot of friends, a really big screen TV (think 72 inches and up), with a kickass sound system, a selection of liquors, a pizza oven and a popcorn cart. Imagine the football parties you could throw in there! I would have installed a vending machine instead. You can set them to "free" mode, set a price and stick a cup of quarters next to it...for extra creativity make the kids pay a quarter every time they get a drink, and use the quarters for a special night during your next vacation. You don't have to sanitize the syrup lines on a vending machine to keep the mold out of your beverages (because there aren't any syrup lines), no CO2 cylinder, no ice...
really nice, saves money and time and not to have to pay big money for soda at a fast food which is a total rip-off. Good job, makes your kitchen look really nice.
Regular ones with sugar in them don't really go bad. Think pancake syrup or jelly. They are so sugary the syrup will suck the water out of any bacteria by osmosis, killing the microbe and preserving your liquid gold.
Did you buy that new or used? What did you pay for the set up? I assume that you I stalled it all yourself? Also, do you use the aluminum block chiller or do you have a remote circulation chiller? I am looking at doing something similar ( not 8 heads) but 3 or 4 and wondering what you have into it? Thanks
the aluminum cold plate is built into the dispenser, that's why it also dispenses ice cubes. most places have an icemaker head installed above the dispenser that automatically keeps the ice bin filled.
Now I know exactly what to install in my kitchen once I get my own place, unless it's an apartment and they won't let me, but it doesn't stop me from dreaming
The best way to clean/ sanitize the line on the soda machine, is to order a converter/adapter from Coke service department it is less than $5 and a pack of sanitizer. First dissolve the sanitizer in a bucket. Then disconnect the syrup nozzle and connect the adapter. Place the nozzle with the adapter in the bucket and press the soda selection button in the machine. Repeat the process for all the syrup lines. I hope it helps.

Your bag-in-box holds 5 gallons of syrup. There are 128 ounces in 1 gallon. So, there are 640 ounces in 5 gallons. Your soda fountain system will mix water and syrup at a 5 to 1 ratio. Divide cup size by 6 for number of ounces of syrup used per cup. Example for 10 oz. cup: 10 ÷ 6 = approximately 1.7 There are approximately 1.7 oz. of syrup used per each 10 oz. cup Divide oz. of syrup used per cup by 640 total oz. Example: 640 ÷ 1.7 = approximately 376 This is the estimated number of servings per 5 gallon bag in box (*excluding ice)
