    Graduated OCC in Dec. 1986. He's right about the mental toughness - that was the real separator. The accumulation of not enough sleep, getting sick (I had a cold most of the way), and various minor injuries can wear you down. You just feel rundown all the time. The most "sat" candidate in my platoon DOR'ed when one day he just had enough. Besides the excellent advice the Sgt. Instructor gave, what I did was this: I psyched myself up in the months before I left. I told myself over and over it was only 10 weeks and I could stand on my head if necessary for 10 weeks. Promise to yourself you won't leave unless you get kicked out. Promise to yourself that even if at OCS you decide the USMC is not for you, you will graduate OCS and then turn down your commission. Mentally close off all the easy way outs before you go. While you are there, when you are in a bad spot, tell yourself that every day, every minute, every second gets you closer to your goal of graduation. You don't have to graduate as the top candidate. You just have to graduate (which is what I did - barely).

    • @63dmt
      @63dmt 3 роки тому +4

      @@concernedcitizen2816 I agree. I didn't say that if you prepare yourself properly you are guaranteed to graduate. Far from it. My best was barely good enough, and it might not have been good enough in another class. Who knows? You never know until you actually get there and experience it. All you can do is manage the things under your control and prepare yourself physically, psychologically and, yes, spiritually then hope for the best. And if you don't make it, but have given it your best, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

      @@63dmt Dave: you were there six months before I rolled in. Not all attrition is DOR. Interesting story, it’s not always lack of mental toughness that makes a candidate get out of OCS. We had a recon sergeant (probably battalion recon) who we were all told on Day 1 to watch for example. Three weeks later he refused to get out of his rack against the orders of the Sgt Instructor on the weekend. He must’ve felt since he was an E-5 and recon who was another E-5 to tell him what to do. Anyway, that was the last we saw of him. That was mental stupidity.

    You are absolutely spot on... today, too many people quit mentally and it's that inner voice that defeats them. Worrying about tomorrow can ruin your sleep and increase stress. I'm glad you shared this, my time is past, but I'm looking into this stuff as a friend is just getting ready to begin. I think the Academy grads and ROTC grads have a big advantage over those who just graduate and then sign up for OCS. When you discuss those who quit, how many of those had no prior military experience as midshipmen? How do the straight OCS recruits do? Thanks, all good stuff. You are absolutely correct about being injured. I went through the combined PLC Program about 50 years ago and collapsed the arch in my right foot about halfway through the course during what was called the "Speed March Reaction Course". Every morning the bottom of my right foot was painfully swollen and it felt like I had an apple underneath my foot while wearing boots. I knew if I went to medical I could be dropped and I did not want to start all over again. This made the rest of OCS a very much more unpleasant experience since there was no time to heal but I made it through, graduated, went on to basic school and finished out my contract with an Honorable Discharge. He is correct - it can be done. Incidently we started out with 52 and graduated 29.

      I completed OCS in 1997. My advice is to get yourself in the best shape you can. Work HARD before you go and as this Marine said try and replicate the environment you will be in. Prior to going I ran in combat boots not running shoes. I ran at noon time when it was 100 degrees out, not in the am and not in the evening when it was cool. I ran at a pace that caused me to throw up and then I ran some more. Push-up, pull ups and sit-ups all day at Every chance I got. End result is I was in unbelievable physical condition. While there I was able to actually enjoy the physical aspect of the course with No stress. As a result I was able to manage the academics and sleep deprivation better because I wasn’t destroyed from the Physical training. Again as this Marine said, you will have to decide if you are injured or hurt. I got hurt. Blisters from my boots were so bad my socks would stick to quarter size wounds on my heels. It was very painful. I would paint my feet with iodine from the squad bay aid station every night and every morning. I had an out if I wanted to take it. You will likely have to make that choice as well. One last note. Almost everyone is in fantastic shape so I would Target getting to the max run/ pull ups and sit ups to blend in. Those who were near the min standards stand out and gain the “attention” of the Drill Instructors. Work hard!!! it was one of my favorite experiences in my life.

      Check out a recruiting station and see if they can refer you to an accessions NCO. Mine was great, and was always willing to help with any questions regarding my OCS packet.
      It is a long process. I graduated last May and begin OCS next week. Most of the packet are things that you’ll have to get scheduled through your accessions NCO (OCS physical, board, template for LORs, etc).
      Other than getting an accessions NCO, the only things you can really prepare are things like making sure you have all of your transcripts, admin shit like your record brief squared away, and that your physical fitness is great.
