'Tis a soundtrack element in Peter Greenaway's film "Pillow Book". Upon hearing it, I tracked it from the film credits, then down various rabbit holes, and aren't we lucky for search engines, Wikipedia, and U-toob.

Finally stumbled across a near perfect 78 rpm disc in a second hand shop, great find. Still have my parents well cared for HMV wind up gramophone (lovely word) and a good supply of needles so it gets the occasional play....delightful.

Was popular in the early 50s because it recalled the memories that a lot of the WWII GIs had of being in the Pacific. This song was in a stack of 78rpm records that my father still played into the 1960s. Wish someone would revive this song for modern listeners.
The English 50's version was sung by Frankie Lane. It was a genius tribute to Ms. Lee's original by using the words "make way for my Rose," since "mei guay" is the chinese word for "rose." There are a boat-load of modern versions of this song, done by various Asian and Asian-American singers...just type in "Rose Rose I love You" in YT and you'll see at least a dozen contemporary versions. My fav is a jazzy-mambo version by the Shanghai Sisters (they're actually from Malaysia). Enjoy!
