  • An estimated 250 million people are blind or have low vision worldwide - and in France alone, almost 2 million.
We spent a day in Paris with Fernando Pinto da Silva, accessibility and digital usage expert at the French Federation for Blind and Partially Sighted People, as well as Marc Aufrant, volunteer at the Association Valentin Haüy, one of the first libraries for the blind established in the world and the current top institutional user of the ABC Global Book Service.
Fernando, who is blind, took us along on a regular day in his life, and explained how the production, availability and technology behind books in accessible formats for people who are visually impaired have changed for the better over the past decade.
Aided by the WIPO’s Marrakesh Treaty and WIPO’s Accessible Books Consortium (ABC), the number of accessible titles in France has skyrocketed, opening up new learning, and leisure opportunities for persons who are visually impaired.
French organizations and WIPO’s ABC has have played a major role in breaking barriers and championing accessibility for the past decade, ensuring that persons who are visually impaired or print-disabled have access to information, knowledge and literature.
