    I came here to bitch about the lack of 26” wheels only to find several others beat me to it. I’ll just see my happy little self out.
    Looks like a great time. Congrats on your new closet.

      @@MB-jz3uu Depends on discipline. Four Cross still sees 26ers. I'm guessing dirt jump as well. The major gravity races though have all mostly not only ditched 26", but 27.5 as well. At least for the front. Some role mullets.

    26 for life.

      @davetbassbos 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I was in a BMX bubble for 15 years and just found out 26" are gone, I actually used to commute on a 26" MTB with 1" slicks, and apparently some long distance touring bikes use 26" So you could say it's the most versatile wheel size: the same bike could be a decent MTB or a touring bike with just a change of tires.

      @@davetbassbos People tour on 26" because the thought was that you could find them everywhere in 3rd world countries if something happened on the road. That's largely no longer true (and frankly, never really was the case outside of Africa). Most touring bikes have moved to 27.5 or 700. Which is good because they are superior sizes and the rise of gravel bikes means they are proliferating around the globe.

    • @davetbassbos
      @davetbassbos 2 роки тому

      @@cjohnson3836 I do remember seeing that somewhere, and I guess that was the reason for canti brakes and friction shifters too. Not to put you on the spot but just guessing how much more efficient would a 700 be then a 26" given the same rugged touring tires, say 1"? Cheers!

    • @cjohnson3836
      @cjohnson3836 2 роки тому +1

      @@davetbassbos [Assuming same tire width] 700c would be less efficient in towns with stopping and starting and changing speeds. More efficient on open stretches where the greater rotating inertia helps keep the wheels rolling. More efficient at slow speeds in rough roads/off road due to better angle of incidence with rocks and such. Although, smaller wheels does mean you have a functional pedal resistance of a lower gear. So, you need to choose the drive train to match the wheels. So, larger wheels means you need a bigger cog in the back. Really though, the assumption of same tire width is a flawed one. As smaller diameter usually allows for more width. I don't know what the data would say, but I would guess something around 27.5x2" is probably the best for general all conditions/all-road tire for touring. Something like a Schwalbe Almotion. But, we aren't riding on steel rims anymore. Modern materials are great. And a 29x2", at least in my opinion, is probably the best if ignoring remote replacement considerations. Eventually 700c/29 will win out, I predict. Look at bikes now; Kona Sutra-700x40, Surly Disc Trucker-700 and 26 option, Koga Worldtraveler-27.5 or 28 (confusingly, the same thing as 29" in this case). Basically, ISO 622 is the way of the future.

    That’s why you just go crazy and choose 27.5+… it is fun, it is a bit much, it is wonderful on sand, and it is pretty good with snow. I really really want more gearing though since 28-36 is nooooot enough.
    Also, I love the fun you bring to MTB videos. Just makes me wanna go ride immediately since MTB’s are just supposed to be ridiculous and fun.

    Yea, 26er is the true bmx of mountain bikes Mr. Spindatt. Don’t give me this “well the selection is limited” bs. What would Gary Fisher do? He’d ride a 1950s Schwinn with no suspension and 26 inch tires and have just as much fun. Maybe.

    Choose what you like. Smaller riders probably better with smaller wheels. Mostly it's a marketing strategy to sell us something different. I would have been fine with 700c rims with big tires. You can't blame Gary Fisher, Keith Bontrager, John Tomac, et al. They definitely got paid. At least smaller riders got an option, and now 24 inch MTB. The non scientific approach works here because choice depends on conditions and personal preferences. Great video!

    I love the 'gopro' view of this activity. I think ya'll are totally nuts for brutalizing your joints for this much fun. I want to see you do this 20 years from now.....yup! it's not a sustainable sport just like the bikes. (won't last more than 10 years tops.) Where as 90s MTBs, steel is real, and scary me! 26" wheels is a sustainable way to ride.....and where is my Norton Fiend sticker? Huh? huh?
